In the room at the county Historical Museum dedicated to toys of another generation, three rag dolls hold a special place. Their wide eyed stare is almost identical and they were made by the same lady. She was the vigorous wife of the well known pastor of Park Church, the Reverend Thomas K. Beecher. In 1885, Mrs. Beecher while mending a pair of hose was inspired to try to make a baby doll from the material. The pattern formed in her mind was simple. The top was tied up, the middle stuffed very fat and the bottom was formed in plump legs with the ends turned up for feet. Arms were made from the mate of the pair of stockings. The whole was topped with yellow yarn hair. The small girl who received the first doll as a gift was so thrilled that the creator tried another one and added some innovations such as a snub nose and ears. Later, she added dimples in the arms and feet. One was easily sold at a church fair for fifty cents and the project was under way. Friends gave freely of material, new and used and the more affluent provided silk underwear. In the next ten years, 950 dolls were made and sold. Over half were made by Mrs. Beecher and the rest by friends with a very little paid help. The carefully kept account showed a profit of $1,111.89. That was a princely sum for the times and it all was given to foreign and home missions.

MARTIN A. RYERSON
Supported by his good friend and fellow Trustee Charles L. Hutchinson, Ryerson as President of the Board dealt admirably with an array of perplexing challenges, including the constant annual budget deficits run up by President William Rainey Harper. Calm, unflappable, patrician in his bearing, and having an unusually refined level of aesthetic sensibility, Ryerson easily reconciled his dual roles as administrative leader and major donor, while playing a decisive role in the planning of the campus and in defending its remarkable architectural unity and integrity. When John D. Rockefeller offered a major pledge in 1906 to build the Harper Memorial Library, Ryerson also promised $25,000 to the same cause. To these gifts Ryerson added a major endowment to create the Martin A. Ryerson Distinguished Service Professorship in 1925. At the time of his death in 1932, Martin A. Ryerson's total contributions to the University of Chicago exceeded $2 million, not including part of a $6-million-dollar bequest that was evenly divided among the Art Institute, the Field Museum of Natural History, and the University of Chicago. Would you like to tell me something about your family?
Bary
Well, my family. Take my, mother's side. She was part English and part Yankee. She was a Beecher. The Beechers came over about 1630. There were two young men who were sent over to make their fortunes. Their grandfather sent them over; he was an alderman or something in London. I have never been able to find out what they did or anything. He got a charter from the Crown for what they called the Providence Plantations which became later Rhode Island. He paid the Indians for the land that he took, which was quite different from what the Pilgrims had done. He learned Indian languages and he respected them. One of "2" id="p2"> the Beecher grandsons married Williams' granddaughter. That brought the Roger Williams blood into the Beecher family. Then, I really don't know what the Beechers did until the Revolution. They were very strong for the Revolution, and they fought through. Then the next that we know about them was about 1810. The family was living in Connecticut then, at New

(May 12, 1913) Mrs. Susan Huntington Gilbert Dickinson, widow of William Austin Dickinson, died at her home, the Evergreens , in Amherst yesterday, in her 83rd year, from heart disease. She had been seriously ill for a number of weeks, and for several days her life has been slowly, peacefully fading away. She was a woman of rare quality and truly a distinguished citizen of the town, who had made her home for many years one of the notable features of the community. She had undoubtedly entertained at her board more men and women of distinction in the world of literature and affairs than any other householder in the place. She had lived in Amherst from the time of her marriage in 1857 [ sic Mrs. Dickinson was born in Deerfield in 1830, the daughter of Thomas and Harriet Huntington Arms Gilbert. She was the youngest of seven children, none of whom survive her. She lived as a girl, after her mother's death, with her aunt, Mrs. William Van Vranken, at Geneva, N.Y.

'Children of the Holocaust' author Helen Epstein to speak Feb. 28
LAWRENCE Helen Epstein, a Harvard University journalist best known for her ground-breaking book "Children of the Holocaust" will present a public lecture in Lawrence this month. Epstein's lecture, "Memoir as a Tool for Understanding History," will be held in the ballroom of the SpringHill Suites by Marriott in Lawrence at 7:30 pm on Thursday, Feb. 28. "Children of the Holocaust" is widely used in university courses and by therapists. It is the first book to deal with second generation and post-traumatic stress syndrome in children of Holocaust survivors. The lecture is free and open to the public. All events are sponsored by the KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, English Department, Hall Center for the Humanities, KU Hillel, the Lawrence Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Community Women. Epstein is the author of five books of non-fiction, including "Where She Came From: A Daughter's Search for her Mother's History," a family memoir and social history of 200 years of Czech Jewish life, begun while Epstein was a visiting scholar at Harvard University's Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies in 1982. She is also the translator from the Czech of Heda Kovaly's award-winning "Under a Cruel Star: A Life in Prague." Born in Prague in 1947, Epstein became a journalist while an undergraduate caught in the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. For the next 25 years, she worked as a freelance cultural reporter for the Sunday New York Times and other national publications, writing profiles of such figures as Leonard Bernstein, Meyer Schapiro and Joseph Papp. Her profiles of classical musicians have been collected in the book "Music Talks." The first tenured woman professor in New York University's Department of Journalism, she has taught writing since 1974.
