Call of the Wild
Modern Library Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century (88)
Author Info: Jack London
Reading Call of the Wild as an adult, one realizes that it's not actually written for kids. Seemingly the tale of a dog in Alaska, it is actually an argument that our primitive natures lurk just beneath a thin veneer of civilization.

Introduction One of America' s most widely translated and internationally popular writers, John Griffiths London (1876-1916) based his novels and stories on the experiences and observations of a life that took him from the Klondike to the South Seas. His fascination with the theories of such thinkers as Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, and Herbert Spencer, is reflected in the writings that made him America's most successful writer of the early 20th century. Between 1900 and 1916 London completed over 50 books, hundreds of short stories, and numerous articles, with themes varying from tales of the Yukon ( Call of the Wild ), sea-voyages (

Jack London

JACK LONDON
American author (1876-1916)
Biography:
John Griffith, alias Jack London, was born in San Francisco the 12th January 1876. He was the illegitimate son of farmers and alternated his being sailor and cow-boy. Jack London narrates his own life in Martin Eden (1909), where the hero commits suicide after a crusade across the South Seas, prophetising the novelist's tragic ending. The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1907) where adventure, animals and exploited working classes are main characters were really successful, yet on a misunderstanding basis. Jack London joint the Muckraker movement, signing letters for the revollution, but anyway he had Nietzche as master. Revolted by the social extreme poverty of his time, "the best paid writer in the world" did not hesitate and went to live in the slums of London in order to write The People of the Abyss (1903), based on London's observations of the slums of London and illustrated with photographs taken by himself and others. But his heroes stay alone and unsociable, since they keep an idealistic and romantic image of the New World. Jack London died in 1916, in California.

one election day.
It was
on a warm California afternoon,
and I
had ridden
down into the Valley of the Moon from the ranch to the little village to vote Yes and No to a host of proposed amendments to the Constitution of the State of California. Because of the warmth of the day I had had several drinks before casting my ballot, and divers drinks after casting it. Then I had ridden up through the vine-clad hills and rolling pastures of the ranch, and arrived at the farm -house in time for another drink and supper.

Bibliographic Notes: First published in Youth's Companion in 1902. This revised version first published in Century Magazine 1908 August, and collected in the book Lost Face
Day had broken cold and gray, exceedingly cold and gray, when the man turned aside from the main Yukon trail and climbed the high earth-bank, where a dim and little-travelled trail led eastward through the fat spruce timberland. It was a steep bank, and he paused for breath at the top, excusing the act to himself by looking at his watch. It was nine o'clock. There was no sun nor hint of sun, though there was not a cloud in the sky. It was a clear day, and yet there seemed an intangible pall over the face of things, a subtle gloom that made the day dark, and that was due to the absence of sun. This fact did not worry the man. He was used to the lack of sun. It had been days since he had seen the sun, and he knew that a few more days must pass before that cheerful orb, due south, would just peep above the sky-line and dip immediately from view. He plunged in among the big spruce trees. The trail was faint. A foot of snow had fallen since the last sled had passed over, and he was glad he was without a sled, travelling light. In fact, he carried nothing but the lunch wrapped in the handkerchief. He was surprised, however, at the cold. It certainly was cold, he concluded, as he rubbed his numb nose and cheekbones with his mittened hand. He was a warm-whiskered man, but the hair on his face did not protect the high cheekbones and the eager nose that thrust itself aggressively into the frosty air.

Jack London (1876-1916)
John Griffith London (1876-1916) was born in San Francisco to an unmarried mother, Flora Wellman. His father may have been William Chaney, a journalist, lawyer, and major figure in the development of American astrology. Because Flora was ill, Jack was raised through infancy by an ex-slave, Virginia Prentiss, who would remain a major maternal figure while the boy grew up. Late in 1876, Flora married John London, a partially disabled Civil War veteran. The family moved around the Bay area before settling in Oakland, where Jack completed grade school. Though the family was working class, it was not so impoverished as London's later accounts claimed. As an adolescent, London worked at various hard labor jobs, pirated for oysters on San Francisco Bay, served on a fish patrol to capture poachers, sailed the Pacific on a sealing ship, joined Kelly's Army of unemployed working men, hoboed around the country, and returned to attend high school at age 19. In the process, he became acquainted with socialism and was known as the Boy Socialist of Oakland for his street corner oratory, and would run unsuccessfully several times on the socialist ticket as mayor. Always a prolific reader, he consciously chose to become a writer as an escape from the horrific prospects of a life as a factory worker. He studied other writers and began to submit stories, jokes, and poems to various publications, mostly without success. Spending the winter of 1897 in the Yukon provided the metaphorical gold for his first stories, which he began publishing in the Overland Monthly in 1899. From that point he was a highly disciplined writer, who would produce over fifty volumes of stories, novels, and political essays. Although

"The dominant primordial beast was strong in Buck, and under the fierce conditions of trail life it grew and grew. Yet it was a secret growth. His newborn cunning gave him poise and control. He was too busy adjusting himself to the new life to feel at ease, and not only did he not pick fights, but he avoided them whenever possible. A certain deliberateness characterized his attitude. He was not prone to rashness and precipitate action; and in the bitter hatred between him and Spitz he betrayed no impatience, shunned all offensive acts." ( Title Page

Jack London (real name John Griffths London) stared from working in a factory in Calfornai to becoming a popular and best paid novlest of his time. His stories were espicly realstic beacuse of his true exprines. He had lived in Alask, lived and worked at see. and from working in the factories. John Griffiths London (1876-1916) was born in San Francisco to an unmarried mother, Flora Wellman. His father may have been William Chaney. Because Flora was ill, for eight months Jack was raised by an ex-slave, Virginia Prentiss, who would remain a major maternal figure while the boy grew up. Late in 1876, Flora married John London, a partially disabled Civil War veteran, who adopted the Jack. Betwn 1900-1916 London wrote over 50 books both fiction and non fiction. Many of his stories are very descriptev and could get boringing at times. He wrote passionately about life and deth. And the stories that I have reasd were all very sorrowful depressing with some times a hint of joy. For exampel in thr story to bild a fire, the master dies, but the dog is free from his crul master. Or in the story, lost face the man is killed to death, but not totered to death. His Book call of the wild was simlar to the shrot storie called to bild a fire. Most of his short stories were 3rd person nartive, so was call of the wild. A few were 1st story nartive. He used alot of detail and it made the stories go on for ever. I thought that call of the wild had more advanter and was beter writen.
