Henry Charles Lea Papers - Scope and Content
Correspondence According to the Lea's biographer, Sculley Bradley, Lea destroyed his early correspondence (prior to 1860). There is some significant correspondence during the Civil War, but the bulk of correspondence in these files dates from 1868 to 1909. Very little material in these papers is revealing of Lea's personal life or family relations. One very early letter (undated, ca. 1837) was written by Lea to his parents while he and his brother Carey were staying with relatives; there also is a single page from a letter that appears to be from his mother, Frances Anne Carey Lea, to Lea in 1853. An interesting group of ten items from his father, Isaac, to Henry C. Lea were written while Henry was sailing on his yacht through New England waters during the summer of 1881; these letters describe the assassination of President Garfield. Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, and Theodore Roosevelt were among Lea's correspondents, and there is a letter from Woodrow Wilson addressed to Arthur H. Lea, written when Wilson was president of Princeton University. Other United States officials to whom Lea wrote include James M. Beck (1861-1936), solicitor general of the United States; Dorman B. Eaton (1823-1899) of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, who drafted the Pendleton Act of 1883; and Noah H. Swayne of the United States Supreme Court.

Defeating stereotypes in media
Unintentional prejudice is just as damaging as intentional have just read the article "Roots Revisited" in Oct. 4 DA, and I am writing to express my disappointment with the reporter's handling of the subject. While the article was a well-intended effort to publicize the Native American Studies Internship program, I believe that the language used is prejudicial - unwittingly so, no doubt - toward American Indians.

Henry Cabot Lodge,

American Leaders Speak, 1918-1920
On May 12, 1850, Republican statesman and noted historian Henry Cabot Lodge was born in Boston, Massachusetts. The first student of Harvard to graduate with a Ph.D. in political science (1876), Lodge represented his home state in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1887 to 1893, and in the Senate from 1893 to 1924. As chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, he led the successful fight against American participation in the League of Nations, proposed by President Woodrow Wilson at the close of World War I Lodge maintained that membership in the world peacekeeping organization would threaten the sovereignty of the United States by binding the nation to international commitments it would not or could not keep. The American Memory collection American Leaders Speak, 1918-1920 includes a recording of Senator Lodge's 1919 argument against the League. "The United States is the world's best hope," Lodge allowed:
but if you fetter her in the interest through quarrels of other nations, if you tangle her in the intrigues of Europe, you will destroy her powerful good, and endanger her very existence. Leave her to march freely through the centuries to come, as in the years that have gone. Strong, generous, and confident, she has nobly served mankind. Beware how you trifle with your marvelous inheritancethis great land of ordered liberty. For if we stumble and fall, freedom and civilization everywhere will go down in ruin.

Hero Tales From American History
Introduction
"Hence it is that the fathers of these men and ours also, and they themselves likewise, being nurtured in all freedom and well born, have shown before all men many and glorious deeds in public and private, deeming it their duty to fight for the cause of liberty and the Greeks, even against Greeks, and against Barbarians for all the Greeks." PLATO: "Menexenus." Theodore Roosevelt
Henry Cabot Lodge
TO E. Y. R. To you we owe the suggestion of writing this book. Its purpose, as you know better than any one else, is to tell in simple fashion the story of some Americans who showed that they knew how to live and how to die; who proved their truth by their endeavor; and who joined to the stern and manly qualities which are essential to the well-being of a masterful race the virtues of gentleness, of patriotism, and of lofty adherence to an ideal. Henry Cabot Lodge
Theodore Roosevelt Washington, April 19, 1895

Famous People
Mount Auburn Cemetery, founded in 1831, was the nation’s first large-scale designed landscape open to the public. Its beauty and historic associations make the Cemetery an internationally renowned horticultural landscape, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and nominated as a National Historic Landmark in 2002. Our founders believed that burying and commemorating the dead was best done in a tranquil, natural setting. They also believed that the Cemetery should be a place for the living. They set about "embellishing" the natural landscape with ornamental plantings, monuments, fences, fountains and chapels. This inspired concept was copied widely throughout the United States, giving birth to the “rural” cemetery movement and the tradition of garden cemeteries. Their popularity led, in turn, to the establishment of America’s public parks. Contact us at for a list of materials and books exploring Mount Auburn's history and resources.
