Now researchers are assessing ways to tap massive amounts of computing power to preserve some of American history's rarest digital relics, from Ansel Adams photographs to original drafts of the Declaration of Independence. The Library of Congress is evaluating grid technology developed at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) to preserve and manage the library's digital collections. The American Memory project is one of the largest digitized archives of U.S. history, with more than 7.5 million digital records from 100 collections of manuscripts, books, maps, films, sound recordings and photographs.

LIBRARY OF CONGRESS SUBJECT HEADINGS
Using Library of Congress Subject Headings When you search the online catalog by subject , you must use a Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH). The library assigns subject headings to all items listed in the online catalog. This makes it easy to find books on the same or similar topics. Subject headings are listed in a five-volume manual called simply Library of Congress Subject Headings ("the big red books"). Sometimes you can guess the appropriate subject headings, but it's wise to check the manual to be sure. Reference librarians can help you, too. If you are searching for medical topics, use a Medical Subject Heading (MeSH). The MeSH manual is available at the Medical Center Library Keyword searching can provide

A Library of Congress control number is a unique identification number that the Library of Congress assigns to the catalog record created for each book in its cataloged collections. Librarians use it to access the associated bibliographic record in the Library of Congress's database or other databases. The Library of Congress assigns this number while the book is being cataloged. Under certain circumstances, however, a control number can be assigned before the book is published through the Preassigned Control Number Program. Additional programs were started in Thailand Laos Vietnam , and the Philippines . Those programs are expected to be expanded by the year 2001. The goal of the program is to provide valuable research materials to participating academic institutions and public libraries on a cost-recovery basis. We collect materials in more than seven major languages about many different topics. The topics range from education, religion, anthropology, sociology, economics, government and politics, history and current events, geography and the environment, science and technology, literature, medicine, agriculture, to law. While the majority of the materials acquired are either serials or monographs, maps, non-print materials, and audio-visual materials are also collected.
