... An American Ballroom Companion presents a collection of over two hundred social dance manuals at the Library of Congress. The list begins with a rare late fifteenth-century source, Les basses danses de Marguerite d'Autriche (c.1490) and ends with Ella Gardner's 1929 Public dance halls, their regulation and place in the recreation of adolescents . Along with dance instruction manuals, this online presentation also includes a significant number of antidance manuals, histories, treatises on etiquette, and items from other conceptual categories . Many of the manuals also provide historical information on theatrical dance. All illuminate the manner in which people have joyfully expressed themselves as they dance for and with one another. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.

The library was originally housed in the Capitol, and most of its books were destroyed when the British shelled the building during the War of 1812. The major step in rebuilding the collection was taken in 1815, when Congress purchased the 6,000-volume personal library of Thomas Jefferson. With the purchase of the books of Dr. Otto H.F. Vollbehr in 1930, the library more than doubled the size of its collection of incunabula, which is now the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The main Library of Congress building was erected in 1897; the library also occupies the Thomas Jefferson building, formerly called the annex, and the new James Madison building. The post of Librarian of Congress, appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the Senate, has often gone to eminent scholars and artists, as well as to professional librarians. Recent Librarians of Congress include Archibald MacLeish (1939-44), L. Quincy Mumford (1954-74), Daniel J. Boorstin (1974-87), and James H. Billington (1987- ).

    Preservation
  • How should I store my books?
  • How should I display documents or works of art on paper?
  • Can I save wet books? What if my books are moldy?
  • How can I get rid of the smell of mildew in my books? ...
  • What If I have other questions about preservation of library and archives materials?
  • How should I store my books? Store books out of direct sunlight and where air can circulate freely. Store them away from windows and don't put them on shelves against outside walls. Store books on flat, smooth shelves that are strong enough to support their weight. Ideally, books should not be in contact with unsealed wood because it can release damaging acidic vapors. Line shelves with acid free board to prevent this problem. Stand books vertically side by side. Keep similar sizes together: small books next to small books, and large books next to large books. Use bookends to keep the books from falling over, and be sure they are high enough to support the books completely. Avoid storing books in an attic or basement because attics get too hot and basements get too damp. Both are also subject to rapid changes in temperature and humidity levels. Keep books out from under plumbing and water pipes; water damage from these sources is all too common. To protect books with monetary or sentimental value, keep them in custom-fitted archival boxes made from high-quality materials.

    Library of Congress Classification System
The Library of Congress Classification System (LC System) is used to organize books in many academic and university libraries throughout the United States and world. The interdisciplinary nature of geography requires the use of material from a variety of subject areas. This outline, which is part of the Geography site at The Mining Company should assist you to locate areas of the library to begin your research. The LC System organizes material in libraries according to twenty-one branches of knowledge. The 21 categories (labeled A-Z except I,O,W,X and Y) are further divided by adding one or two additional letters and a set of numbers. A - General Works B - Philosophy, Psychology, Religion

    Introduction
The purpose of this guide is to help the philosopher and philosophy student with one of the bothersome tasks of research: finding philosophical and philosophy-related books in the library. It may also answer some questions for the curious library browser who, like myself, has wondered at the arrangements on the library shelves. Since this guide was first created (see the story below) the Philosophy Documentation Center has announced a forthcoming publication titled "Library of Congress Subject Headings in Philosophy." I have no knowledge of this work beyond their catalog description: "thesaurus of philosophical terms compiled from Library of Congress subject headings," so it might cover similar territory as my guide. If so, the high quality of all the Center's publications will no doubt inhere in that work as well, and in the meantime, I offer this guide to all who can use it. My only request is that my name be kept on any copies made. The Library of Congress publishes its classification, revisions, and instructions to its use on a regular basis to help other libraries with their collections. This guide tries to distill this information down to a manageable level suitable for an introduction to the classification. It begins with an overview of the classification and how to use it. Then the method used to classify philosophy is summarized. The bulk of this guide is a condensed version of the Philosophy classification volume. Also provided are lists of philosophy-related topics and where they are located.

02:00 AM Jan. 19, 2001 PT The Library of Congress has finally met its ambitious goal of putting 5 million historical items online by the year 2000. That's no small feat considering the Internet wasn't even around when the project began.

But even as the library completed this monumental task last week, some said its digital strategy still lags. In addition, the project underscores the longstanding concern over whether the library should be geared more toward scholarly pursuits than mainstream interests. The American Memory Project, which began as a pilot project to put images on CD-ROMs, has been woven into one of the largest digitized records of American history, with 90 collections of manuscripts, books, maps, films, sound recordings and photographs online.
