Autobiography of Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) To recount my life for the Nobel Foundation, I would like to present it as possessing some romantic quality, some unique character, like Kipling's early adventures in India, or Bernard Shaw's leadership in the criticism of British arts and economics. But my life, aside from such youthful pranks as sailing on cattleships from America to England during university vacations, trying to find work in Panama during the building of the Canal, and serving for two months as janitor of Upton Sinclair's abortive co-operative colony, Helicon Hall, has been a rather humdrum chronicle of much reading, constant writing, undistinguished travel à la tripper, and several years of comfortable servitude as an editor.
I was born in a prairie village in that most Scandinavian part of America, Minnesota, the son of a country doctor, in 1885. Until I went East to Yale University I attended the ordinary public school, along with many Madsens, Olesons, Nelsons, Hedins, Larsons. Doubtless it was because of this that I made the hero of my second book, The Trail of the Hawk , a Norwegian, and Gustaf Sondelius, of Arrowsmith , a Swede - and to me, Dr. Sondelius is the favorite among all my characters.

American novelist, playwright, and social critic who gained popularity with his satirical novels. Sinclair Lewis won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1930, the first given to an American. His total output includes 22 novels and three plays. Though Lewis criticized at times the American way of living pessimistically, his basic view was optimistic, presenting an American human comedy after the examples of Balzac and Dickens. "His central characters are the pioneer, the doctor, the scientist, the businessman, and the feminist. The appeal of his best fiction lies in the opposition between his idealistic protagonists and an array of fools, charlatans, and scoundrels - evangelists, editorialists, pseudo-artists, cultists, and boosters."

    Sinclair Lewis
Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was born in the town of Sauk Center, Minnesota. He was graduated from Yale after several unhappy years there, and then became an editor and writer. His early writing was commercial and undistinguished. But when he published Main Street in 1920, he proved that he had become a very effective novelist. Main Street immediately captured America's attention, as did Scott Fitzgerald's very different This Side of Paradise , published in the same year. In his first important novel, Lewis established the methods and subject matter that would bring him world fame and eventually a Nobel Prize in Literature¡Xthe first American author to be so honored. That is, he described daily life in America with such a sharp eye and ear that readers could easily recognize it as part of their own experience. But he did it with such an emphasis on the comic and ridiculous that he made his readers laugh, in spite of themselves, at some of the silliness of their country. Like the noted satirists of the past, he wanted to reform the America he pictured by skillfully arousing his readers' sympathies for the non-conformist in a conformist society. The heroine of Main Street is a rebellious young woman who struggles hard to bring culture to her dead little town, and we feel a wry regret when in the end she decides to conform. However, Lewis' comic energy is so compelling that we cannot take her failure entirely seriously, though Sauk Center's inhabitants recognized themselves all too clearly at the time and took Lewis' lampooning so much to heart that it was years before the town could advertise itself to tourists as the model for

Top 100 English-Language Novels of the 20th Century: The Radcliffe List
The ASU-West Library owns nearly all of these titles and often has more than one edition or copy. For a list of available titles please consult the annotated list below. In order to keep the length of this page to a minimum, a hyperlink is only provided to one copy (usually the most current or definitive edition) of the book available at the West campus. All titles with more than one edition available from the West Library are followed by an * (asterisk). The Radcliffe List is a response to the Modern Library - 100 Best Novels list, which has been criticized for undervaluing women, minorities, and contemporary writers. As with any "Top 100" list there is definite disagreement both upon what titles belong and their appropriate ranking. The two lists (Modern Library and Radcliffe) only agree on 47 titles - Titles Appearing on Both Lists
