25. Anne Bonny's Ghost Ship
Francis H. Leggett. The steamer Francis H. Leggett left Grays Harbor bound for SanFrancisco with a load of railroad ties, carrying 67 passengers and crew.
http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/4704/shipwrecks.html
var Loaded=false;var Flag=false; Anne Bonny's Shipwreck Page Welcome to my shipwreck page!
I have always had a fascination for shipwrecks, and this will be my special page just for this purpose. The Titanic , of course, will have a page of her own, so do not look for her here. I prefer to focus mostly on Pacific Coast shipwrecks. If you have a particular shipwreck you'd like to see here, or if you have any questions- just
e-mail me!

The Peter Iredale, Clatsop Spit, wrecked October 25, 1906.
For those of you interested in the recent wreck of the New Carissa near Coos Bay, OR, I plan to put in an entry here as time permits. Keep checking. Francis H. Leggett One of Oregon's most tragic shipwrecks happened on September 18, 1914, a black day in Pacific maritime history.
The steamer Francis H. Leggett left Grays Harbor bound for San Francisco with a load of railroad ties,
carrying 67 passengers and crew. About 60 miles southwest of the Columbia River, the steamer was caught in strong winds from the southwest.
The storm growing, the ocean's waves rose to unprecedented heights, pitching the ship so that no one could keep their footing.

26. Vivekananda Retreat, Ridgely
(The Little Cottage and the Inn, built in the mid 1800s, were already on theland when Francis Leggett bought the three parcels forming his estate.).

Leaves Pressed in the Book of Time
The Beginnings
Early in 1895 two sisters began attending classes by Swami Vivekananda in New York. One of them Josephine MacLeod, unmarried and around 37 years old wrote years later: On the twenty-ninth of January 1895, I went with my sister to 54 West 33rd Street, New York, and heard the Swami Vivekananda in his sitting room where were assembled fifteen or twenty ladies and two or three gentlemen. The room was crowded. All the arm chairs were taken; so I sat on the floor in the front row. Swami stood in the corner. He said something, the particular words of which I do not remember, but instantly to me that was truth, and the second sentence he spoke was truth, and the third sentence was truth. And I listened to him for seven years and whatever he uttered was to me truth. From that moment life had a different import. It was as if he made you realize that you were in eternity. It never altered. It never grew. It was like the sun that you will never forget once you have seen [it]. At the time her widowed sister Betty MacLeod Sturges, who was in her early forties was being courted by Mr. Francis H. Leggett, a wealthy New York businessman. One evening Mr. Leggett went with Betty and Jo to hear the Swami, and at the conclusion of the talk he asked the Swami when they could dine together.

The Swami's hosts in 1899 at Ridgely were Francis H. Leggett, a wealthy businessman of New York, and his wife, Besse Sturges Leggett. Among the Swami's now-well-known fellow guests were his brother monks Swamis Turiyananda and Abhedananda, Besse Leggett's sister, Josephine MacLeod, a great admirer of the Swami's, his English disciple Sister Nivedita, and his American disciple Mrs. Ole Bull. It was a great house party, a great summer! After Francis Leggett's death in 1909, the Ridgely property, which he had purchased 1892, came into the caring hands of his descendants: his daughter, Mrs. Frances Leggett, and in recent times, his grandson, Lord Francis Margesson. In the 1980s the property came up for sale. It was in the last days of March of 1997 that the Trustees of the Ramakrishna Order resolved during their annual meeting at Belur Math (the Order's headquarters near Calcutta) that if enough money could be raised to purchase the Ridgely property, the Ramakrishna Mission would accept it as a retreat center to be conducted by a swami of the Order. Once that resolution was made, things moved rapidly. Swami Swahananda, head of the Vedanta Society of Southern California was appointed by the Trustees as the spiritual leader of the proposed Retreat, and Swami Atmarupananda, who was at that time posted to the Vedanta Society of San Diego, was chosen to be the swami-in-residence at Ridgely.

Company Profile Our Past - Creating a tradition
In 1967, J. Ernest Kite, a longtime Cincinnati food broker, recognizing the tremendous potential of the foodservice industry began a series of food company acquisitions. Most notably were the Francis H. Leggett Company, a seven state retail distributor and Ellenbee Foods, a strong school and health care supplier. Building on the sound history of these two firms, Ellenbee Leggett was founded. By 1980, with the addition of several more quality food specialty firms, combining over 100 years of experience, Ellenbee Leggett had established itself as a leader in the region's foodservice industry. Thus the tradition of quality and service, initiated almost 30 years ago, thrives today and with determination, will flourish tomorrow. Our Present
Ellenbee Leggett, Inc. is a customer responsive distributor of foodservice products in the Cincinnati, Ohio Tri-State area. As Innovators in our industry we focus on partnerships with our customers while providing growth and enrichment to our employees. In building our business... and reputation, attention to detail is the norm. Service, product and people create the dynamic that is Ellenbee Leggett.

  • Town of Marbletown Located in the central part of the county, it was one of the original five townships in 1683. Old soldiers of the Indian wars and veterans of the English Army who came in 1664 received grants there from the government in 1670 and settled in a village at what is now called North Marbletown, but soon scattered and took up the outlying land for farms, which in some cases they bought of the Indians.
The town lands, covering the area of many of these purchases, were granted by Queen Anne to the town trustees, June 25,1703, and were reconveyed by them to settlers. Prices for land at this time were twelve pence an acre for lowland, six pence for upland. It has always been an excellent farming country.
One hundred eleven slaves were listed in the town in 1755. A remarkably large proportion of the early names, such as Van De Mark, Schoonmaker, Krom, DeWitt, Bogart, Davis, Hardenbergh, Hasbrouck, Roosa are found in town today. Prominent early English families were the Ashfordbys, Gartons, Nottinghams, Pawlings and Brodheads. John Beatty, an Irishman of aristocratic lineage, married Susan Ashfordby and built the first house at Stone Ridge.
Government by regularly elected town officials began at least as early as 1711. The regulation of matters relating to town property and perhaps some civil administration is recorded from 1703 onward. As in New Paltz and Rochester, the two governing bodies functioned simultaneously.
