    KOMMENTARY
    IN HONOR OF ROBERT E. LEE (1807 - 1870)
This Monday, January 20th, marks the 196th birthday of one of the most beloved generals in American history as well as of the greatest heroes for the White Race and the South, General Robert E. Lee.
Robert Edward Lee was born January 20, 1807 at Stratford Hall plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Lees father was the noted Revolutionary War cavalryman, Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee. Light-Horse Harry Lee was a close friend of George Washington of whom Light-Horse Harry Lee uttered the immortal words: "First in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen."
Lee graduated from West Point in 1829, second in his class without a single demerit. For the next thirty years Lee served served with honor and distinction in the United States Army, most notably during the Mexican War. General Winfield Scott, the U.S. commander in Mexico described Lee as "the very best soldier I ever saw in the field" and also stated the victory in Mexico was largely through the efforts of Robert E. Lee.
In October of 1859, Lee led 93 U.S. Marines in the capture of the racial renegade John Brown and his gang of fanatical cutthroats at Harpers Ferry, thwarting Browns effort to incite a slave rebellion.

The collection contains fund raising literature, newspaper clippings, broadsides and brochures. There is a larger related body of financial and other material on the Association in the Rockbridge Historical Society collection. There is also material in the Robert E. Lee Papers (collection 064). Birthplace: Alexandria Virginia Senior Command: Army of Northern Virginia One of history's greatest commanders, Robert E. Lee led the Army of Northern Virginia from July 1, 1862, to the Confederacy's end at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. For nearly three years, the brilliant, daring, and resourceful Virginian fought the always larger, more powerful Union Army of the Potomac to a draw. In seventeen years in the prewar army, he saw varied service at outposts around the country. Lee fought in Mexico in 1846 to 1847 and was wounded there. He was superintendent of West Point from 1852 to 1855. In 1859 he commanded the detachment that captured the insurrectionary John Brown at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. On the outbreak of the Civil War, his superiors graded him the outstanding officer in U.S. service. President Lincoln offered Lee command of Union forces after the attack on Fort Sumter. Though Lee opposed secession, Virginia's decision to leave the Union forced him to choose between his officer's oath and loyalty to his state. 'I cannot raise my hand against my birthplace, my home, my children,' he wrote a friend. In May 1861 he accepted a brigadier general's commission in the Confederate Army. His career as a commander started slowly. His first field campaign, in western Virginia later in 1861, ended a failure. After a brief service as President Jefferson Davis's military advisor, he assumed command of the Army of Northern Virginia in June 1862.
