Battle of Seven Days June 25 - July 1, 1862
"It was not war...it was murder."
Major General Daniel Harvey Hill, CSA A defeat that could have ended the war stared Robert E. Lee in the eyes when he assumed command of the Confederate forces participating in the battles in the eastern theater. General Joseph Eggleston Johnston's wounding in the Battle of Seven Pines led to Lee's appointment. Richmond was poorly defended: The capital's fortifications were lacking, and the defending troops were demoralized and outnumbered by the Union forces nearby. Lee acted immediately. He strengthened Richmond's defenses, improved his army's organization, replenished supplies and weapons, and made himself known to all his troops. All the while, he was formulating a plan to drive the Union troops from Richmond and gain the upper hand. Lee's actions worked and worked well. General Lee's aim was to cut off Little Mac's (Major General George B. McClellan, USA) main army of 125,000 troops from their supply base. Lee planned several ruses to be supported by Major General John B. Magruder and Major General Thomas J. Stonewall. The plan was to commence on June 26, but McClellan had also planned an assault that day. Once he heard of Stonewall Jackson's approach McClellan canceled his plan under the mistaken idea that his forces would be outnumbered. Although the Lee's plan didn't meet with success in the manner he envisioned it still worked. He cut off McClellan from his supplies, Lee won 22 guns and a large amount of badly needed supplies, and broke the siege of Richmond. The Confederate capital was safe for the time being.

In strains that every heart beguiles,
How warriors fought and heroes fell
For Helen, false and fickle belle;

The greatest warrior world has known, Let Albion proud as is her due, Boast of decisive Waterloo And yet Virginia rightly claims The greatest galaxy of names In modern times, if not in all, Names which for adoration call. First, Henry, whose impassion'd zeal And eloquence made others feel The force of his resistless plea For either death or liberty; Then Washington, where can you trace In annals of the human race In any clime, a greater claim To immortality and fame? And still to-day Virginia gives A name that now and ever lives;

You can be a n y t h i n g you want to be, have anything you desire, accomplish anything you set out to accomplish if you will hold to that d e s i r e with singleness of purpose." ~ Robert E. Lee Great leader and brilliant Confederate General, Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) was born on this day in Westmoreland County, Virginia. The son of a Revolutionary War hero , Lee graduated second in his class at West Point. "Never do a wrong thing to make a friend or to keep one," he said. Lee fought in the Mexican War and was called by his commander "the very best soldier I ever saw in the field." After the war, he became superintendent of West Point (1852-1855) and sought to raise the school's academic standards. Before the start of the Civil War, he freed all of his slaves. The bold and daring commander was so highly regarded that Abraham Lincoln repeatedly offered Lee command of the Union armies. Lee, of course, resigned, joined the Confederates, and became Jefferson Davis' personal military advisor. "A true man of honor feels humbled himself when he cannot help humbling others," Lee said. After the war, he urged Southerners to accept defeat with dignity and work to restore the country's unity.

Robert E. Lee
Robert Edward Lee was born at Stratford in Westmoreland County, Virginia. His father was Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, famed Revolutionary War hero and governor of Virginia. Harry Lee was preoccupied with politics and extricating himself from financial difficulties. He left the rearing of his son to others. Lee did not have sufficient funds to attend a traditional college, so he enrolled at West Point. In 1829 he graduated second in his class and was much admired by his fellow cadets. His initial service was in the Engineering Corps. In 1831, Lee married Mary Anne Randolph Custis, a wealthy plantation owner and the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington. Lee served in the Mexican War (1846-48) and was wounded in the storming of Chapultepec. He won high praise from General Winfield Scott . Lee transferred to the cavalry in the hope of earning faster promotions. From 1852 to 1855, Lee was the superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy. Lee gained national attention in 1859 when, at home on leave, he was summoned to lead Marines against

Robert E. Lee
Jan 19, 1807 - 1870
US Civil War General of the Confederate Army.
Robert Edward Lee was born Jan 19, 1807 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was the fourth child of Ann and Henry Lee. Although he was born into an important family with many dominant figures, he was also born very poor. His father was not very good at financial issues, so he had many debts. Even though they had no money, they still owned Stratford Hall, which was the big plantation house they lived in. They sometimes had to chain the doors to keep the debt collectors out. But eventually, the collectors won. When Robert was only two years old his father was thrown into prison because he could not meet the creditors' demands. During Henry's absence, Robert grew very close to his mother. She taught him the Christian faith, and taught him how to pray. After he finished school he applied for a position at West Point Military School, which took over a year to get in. Once there he studied hard, obeyed all of the very strict rules, and ultimately finished at the top of his class. After he finished at West Point he was assigned to Fort Pulaski on Cockspur Island. When work was suspended due to weather problems he returned home and married Mary Custis. After he was married he went to Texas to fight in the Mexican war. During this time he was promoted from Lieutenant to Captain to Colonel. Many of his commanding officers said that he was the best soldier they had ever seen.

LEE, ROBERT EDWARD (1807-1870). Robert Edward Lee, army officer and commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War, qv spent several crucial years of his career in Texas. Lee was born on January 19, 1807, at Stratford Hall, Westmoreland County, Virginia, the son of Gen. Henry and Ann (Carter) Lee. He graduated second in his class at the United States Military Academy in 1829. On June 30, 1831, while stationed at Fort Monroe he married Mary Custis of Arlington, Virginia; they became the parents of seven children. Lee was quite devoted to his family, and as often as military duty would permit, he spent much time at home. He had a wide variety of assignments-working in the chief engineer's office, Washington, D.C., 1834-37; supervising construction on the St. Louis harbor, 1837; and serving with his regiment at Fort Hamilton, New York, 1841-46, with Gen. John E. Wool's qv army from San Antonio to Buena Vista, 1846-47, and with Gen. Winfield Scott's army from Vera Cruz to Mexico City, 1847. As Scott's chief of staff during the Mexican War, qv Lee won three brevets- major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel - all because of conspicuous gallantry in the field. After the Mexican War Lee directed the building of Fort Carroll, near Baltimore, Maryland. From September 1, 1852, until March 31, 1855, he was superintendent of the United States Military Academy. On March 3, 1855, Congress had authorized two new regiments of infantry and two of cavalry to help protect the 8,000-mile western frontier. Against 11,000 troops were 30,000 Indians in widely dispersed raiding bands. Texas had a frontier of more than 1,200 miles, with only 2,886 United States officers and enlisted men to defend it.
