Robert E. Lee and Montana On 16 February 1861, Confederate sympathizers took over the United States Government facilities in Texas. In the afternoon, Lt. Col. Robert E. Lee rode into San Antonio under orders to leave his remote Texas post and report to Washington. He saw a mob of soldiers in unusual uniforms and asked who they were. Then he learned that General Twiggs had surrendered everything to the State and that the Union troops were now prisoners of war. Caroline Darrow wrote in her Recollections , "I will never forget his look of astonishment, as with his lips trembling and his eyes full of tears, he exclaimed, 'Has it come so soon as this?'" The Texas troops tried to stop his journey and he stated that he was a Virginian, not a Texan, and he was an officer of the United States army under orders to report to Washington, and he intended to carry out his orders. The Texans permitted him to leave. Letters from Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) to William Ellinger of Virginia City, Montana Letter 17 January 1866, Lexington, VA Lexington, Va. 17 Jany '66

"Their ragged clothes make no difference. The enemy never sees their backs."
Robert E Lee was born on January 19th, 1807. He was born in Stratford, Virginia. His father was Lighthorse Harry Lee. Like many famous people of this war he was educated at the US Military Academy which is now known as West Point. In 1829 he graduated 2nd in his class. He married Mary Anne Randolph Custis in 1831, a great-granddaughter of Martha Washington. Arlington House, her father's residence in Virginia, was their home until the Civil War. After that he recieved a commission as second liuetenant in the engineers. He took that offer and in 7 years, which was 1838, he became first liuetenant. Just two years after that he became captain.
The Mexican War was the distinguishing point in Lee's career. But things like that have to happen with a price. Lee got injured in the Battle of Chapultepec in 1847. For his service in this war he recieved a third brevet promotion in rank. He became superintendent of the US Military Academy and was then later appointed colonel of Calvery. Now times were coming close where it seemed evident that the states would be at war (at the time he was in command of the Department of Texas in 1860). He was summoned to Washington D.C. to be offered a job by Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln offered him the Union forces. Sadly Lee declined and on April 20th, 3 days after Virginia seceeded from the US, Lee submitted his resignation form. On April 23rd, 3 days after his resignation from the US he became commander in chief of the military and naval forces in Virginia. He was the military advisor for

Robert Edward Lee The idol of the south to this day, Virginian Robert E. Lee had some difficulty in adjusting to the new form of warfare that unfolded with the Civil War, but this did not prevent him from keeping the Union Armies in Virginia at bay for almost three years. The son of Revolutionary War hero, "Light Horse" Harry Lee - who fell into disrepute in his later years, attended West Point and graduated second in his class. During his four years he never earn a single demerit and served as the cadet corps' adjutant. Upon his 1829 graduation he was posted to the engineers. Before the Mexican War he served on engineering projects in GA, VA and New York. During the war he served on the staff of John Wool and Winfield Scott. Particularly distinguishing himself scouting for and guiding troops, he won three brevets and was slightly wounded at Chapultepec. In 1859 he was called upon to lead a force of marines, to join with the militia on the scene, to put an end to John Browns Harpers Ferry Raid. There after he served again in Texas until summoned to Washington in 1861 by Winfield Scott who tried to retain Lee in the U.S. service. But the Virginian rejected the command of the Union's field forces on the day after Virginia seceded. He then accepted an invitation to visit Governor John Letcher in VA. His resignation as Colonel, 1st Cavalry to which he had recently been promoted was accepted on April 25, 1861.

Lee graduated second in the class without a single demerit against his name. He was commissioned a brevet 2nd Lieutenant of Engineers. On June 30, 1831, he married Mary Ann Randolph Custis. 1807 1870 Robert Edward Lee. Lee, a brilliant General, whose military genius wasprobably the greatest single On October 12, 1870, Robert Edward Lee died.
    http://www.tombtown.com/bios/lee.htm
ROBERT EDWARD LEE Son of Lighthorse Harry Lee, Robert Edward Lee was born January 19, 1807 at Stratford in Westmoreland County, VA. Following in his father's footsteps, Lee entered West Point in 1825. He graduated second in his class in 1829, receiving a commission as second lieutenant in the engineers. By 1838, he had two brevet promotions, achieving the rank of Captain. Through his courage and brilliant strategies, he received his third brevet promotion in rank in 1852, becoming the superintendent of West Point, the US Military Academy, and later, colonel of the cavalry. In April 17, 1861, Virginia suceded from the Union. At age 54, Lee had to evaluate his position as a member of Union and as a Virginian. Although he did not necessarily agree with southern independence, he was a Virginian. The traditions and familiy history were very strong. On April 20, he submitted his resignation from the U.S. Army, and three days later became President of the Confederate States of America; forever more to be intrinsically linked to the Confederate cause. He was placed in command of the army in northern Virginia. In February 1865 Lee was made commander in chief of all Confederate armies. Lee, a brilliant general, whose military genius was probably the greatest single factor in keeping the Confederacy alive through the four years of the American Civil War, surrendered two months later to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, virtually ending the war. The superior resources and troop strength of the Union had eventually overcom the masterly strategy of Lee. Today, his campaigns are almost universally studied in military schools as models of strategy and tactics.

Another brother, FRANCIS LIGHTF0OT LEE (1734—1797), was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1770—1775. In 1775—1779 he was a delegate to the Continental Congress, and as such signed the Declaration of Independence. He served on the committee which drafted the Articles of Confederation, and contended that there should be no treaty of peace with Great Britain which did not grant to the United States both the right to the Newfoundland fisheries and the free navigation of the Mississippi. After retiring from Congress he served in 1780—1782 in the Virginia Senate. LEE, R.—LEE, S. The military operations with which the great Civil War opened in 1861 were directed by President Davis and General Lee. Lee was personally in charge of the unsuccessful West Virginian operations in the autumn, and, having been made a full general on the 3ist of August, during the winter he devoted his experience as an engineer to the fortification and general defence of the Atlantic coast. Thence, when the well-drilled Army of the Potomac was about to descend upon Richmond, he was hurriedly recalled to Richmond. General Johnston was wounded at the battle of Fair Oaks (Seven Pines) on the 3ist of May 1862, and General Robert E. Lee was assigned to the command of the famous Army of Northern Virginia which for the next three years " carried the rebellion on its bayonets." Little can be said of Lee's career as a commander-in-chief that is not an integral part of the history of the Civil War. His first success was the " Seven Days' Battle " (
