Parody of Excelsior
undated
Edward Lear, famous as a landscape artist and humourist, was a close friend of Edward Wilson . Here, in homage to Wilson's interest in pig-breeding, he offers a parody of Longfellow's poem Excelsior , in which a young mountaineer climbs the highest summit at the cost of his life, all the while bearing a banner with the word "excelsior" ("higher"). Lear's prodigious porker runs no risk of perishing in the heights: a much more mundane fate awaits him. List of Documents Pages for all Time

Melody
Edward Lear 1812-1888 There was an old man of Tobago,
Who lived on rice, gruel and sago
Till, much to his bliss,
His physician said this -
To a leg, sir, of mutton you may go.
There was a Young Lady in White,
Who looked out at the depths of the Night;
But the birds of the air
Filled her heart with despair, And oppressed that Young Lady in White. There was a Young Lady of Lucca, Whose lovers completely forsook her; She ran up a tree And said, 'Fiddle-de-dee!' Which embarrassed the people of Lucca. There was a Young Lady of Parma, Whose conduct grew calmer and calmer; When they said, 'Are you dumb? She merely said, 'Hum!' That provoking Young Lady of Parma. There was a Young Lady of Portugal, Whose ideas were excessively nautical: She climbed up a tree, To examine the sea, But declared she would never leave Portugal. There was a Young Lady of Tyre, Who swept the loud chords of a lyre; At the sound of each sweep She enraptured the deep, And enchanted the city of Tyre. There was a Young Person of Smyrna

LEAR, EDWARD
LEAR, EDWARD (1812-1888), English artist and humorist, was born in London on the I2th of May 1812. His earliest drawings were ornithological. When he was twenty years old he publishec a brilliantly coloured selection of the rarer Psittacidae. Its power attracted the attention of the I3th earl of Derby, who employed Lear to draw his Knowsley menagerie. He became " a permanent favourite with the Stanley family; and Edward 15th earl, was the child for whose amusement the first Book oj Nonsense was composed. From birds Lear turned to landscape his earlier efforts in which recall the manner of J. D. Harding but he quickly acquired a more individual style. About 1837 he set up a studio at Rome, where he lived for ten years, with summer tours in Italy and Sicily, and occasional visits to England During this period he began to publish his Illustrated JournaL of a Landscape Painter: charmingly written reminiscences o wandering, which ultimately embraced Calabria, the Abruzzi See Letters of Edward Lear to Chichester Fortescue, Lord Carlingford, and Frances, Countess Waldegrave (1907), edited by Lady Strachey, with an introduction by Henry Strachey.
