Emma Lazarus (1849-1887) may be best known as the poet whose `New Colossus' is inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty: "Give me your tired, your poor..." But Lazarus is insufficiently known as a brilliant and impassioned thinker who shared ideas on society and literature with leading figures of her day, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, William James, Henry George, Robert Browning, and Jewish leaders in New York City. Her interests and influencesand her concern about social issues and anti-Semitism here and abroad during her short lifetimeare expressed in comments and insights about her writings, noted by Morris U. Schappes, editor of Jewish Currents Magazine, in this new edition's Introduction and Afterword. A new bibliography rounds out this expanded paperback reprint created in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Emma Lazarus' birth. A

Emma Lazarus (1849-1887), American poet, born in New York City. Her sonnet "The New Colossus" (1883), which was inscribed in 1903 on the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor expresses her faith in the United States as a haven for the oppressed. Encarta National Park Service Jewish Women's Archive From The New Colossus, inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty: "Give me your tired, your poor,

The New Colossus
by Emma Lazarus (1849-1887)
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightening, and her name,
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door." COMMENTS The title of the above poem alludes to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, a huge bronze statue that stood at the city's harbor, representing the much larger mythological god Helios, thought by Greek mythology to stand astride the harbor. Emma Lazarus (1849-1887), a Portuguese Jewish immigrant, penned the poem and won the contest held in 1883 to find a suitable inscription to go on a plaque for the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. HE who could beard the lion in his lair,
To bind him for a girl, and tame the boar,
And drive these beasts before his chariot,
Might wed Alcestis. For her low brows' sake,
Her hairs' soft undulations of warm gold,
Her eyes' clear color and pure virgin mouth,
Though many would draw bow or shiver spear, Yet none dared meet the intolerable eye, Or lipless tusk, of lion or of boar. This heard Admetus, King of Thessaly, Whose broad, fat pastures spread their ample fields Down to the sheer edge of Amphrysus' stream, Who laughed, disdainful, at the father's pride, That set such value on one milk-faced child. One morning, as he rode alone and passed Through the green twilight of Thessalian woods, Between two pendulous branches interlocked, As through an open casement, he descried

To R. W. E.
by Emma Lazarus
As when a father dies, his children draw
About the empty hearth, their loss to cheat
His all-familiar words with whispered awe.
The honored habit of his daily law,
Not for his sake, but theirs whose feeble feet
Need still that guiding lamp, whose faith, less sweet, Misses that tempered patience without flaw, So do we gather round thy vacant chair, In thine own elm-roofed, amber-rivered town, Not for thy fame's sake, do we weave this crown, And feel thy presence in the sacred air, Forbidding us to weep that thou art gone.
and still more
Concord Hymn by Ralph Waldo Emerson By the rude bridge that arched the flood, Their flag to April's breeze unfurled, Here once the embattled farmers stood And fired the shot heard round the world.

Chapter 6: The American Dream
Emma Lazarus
Emma Lazarus

Born in New York City, Emma Lazarus was one of the foremost poets of her day, but she is remembered almost exclusively for her poem "The New Colossus" written in 1883. The sonnet was intended as part of an effort to raise funds for the Statue of Liberty and was later inscribed on the statue's base. It remains a vivid reminder of the immigrant's American dream. Lazarus' collections include Admetus and Other Poems (1871) and Songs of a Semite (1882), and she also wrote for essays, translations, and a verse play. An outspoken defender of Judaism, Lazarus decried the persecution of Jews in Russia and elsewhere.
