Both bronzes have the inscription 'Presented by Passmore Edwards' above the figures. They were originally set into the walls of the entrance lobby. In 1991 the library moved to its new location in South Mall, Edmonton Green. The bronzes were removed from the building and entered the Museum's collections.

Charles Lamb (1775-1834)
Charles Lamb was born in London in 1775. Lamb was a timid and retiring youth by nature. He was educated at Christ's Hospital where he was a fellow pupil of Coleridge. He obtained a clerkship first in the South Sea House, then in 1792 in the India House, where the remainder of his working life was spent. He was mentally affected from time to time due to family problems as a streak of madness ran in his family. His sister Mary Lamb murdered his mother in a sudden frenzy in 1796 and became insane later. Lamb devoted his life in taking care of her.
Lamb started his career as a writer in 1795. He began with the poem ' The Old Familiar Faces'. Next he tried his hands at writing tragedies in the style of his favourite Elizabethan dramatists. Since he found no success in his literary endeavours he tried his hand at prose and essay writing which in course of time earned him fame.
'Tales from Shakespeare' (1807) was his first successful literary venture. It was a delightful abridged version of the Shakespearean plays written in simple language for the children. This book was compiled by Lamb and his sister Mary. While the former re-wrote the tragedies the latter handled the comedies. Lamb was fascinated by the Elizabethan literature and so he attempted a bold assessment of Shakespeare's contemporaries in 'Specimens of English Dramatic Poets Contemporary with Shakespeare' (1808). In this volume Lamb selected the finest scenes from the Elizabethan dramas. He assessed their merits and demerits and added his own commentary to each of them. Thus by praising the works of these Elizabethan dramatists so highly Lamb created a new appeal for their works.

Charles Lamb
English essayist and critic, 1775-1834
Credulity is the man's weakness, but the child's strength. Don't introduce me to that man! I want to go on hating him, and I can't hate a man whom I know. A laugh is worth a hundred groans in any market. Presents, I often say, endear absents. I have passed all my days in London, until I have formed as many and intense local attachments as any of you mountaineers can have done with dead nature. The greatest joy I know is to do a good action by stealth, and have it found by accident. The teller of a mirthful tale has latitude allowed him. We are content with less than absolute truth. 'Tis the privilege of friendship to talk nonsense, and have her nonsense respected. New Year's Day is every man's birthday. It is good to love the unknown. Charles Lamb
English essayist and critic, 1775-1834
Separate from the pleasure of your company, I don't much care if I never see another mountain in my life. For thy sake, tobacco, I would do anything but die. Lawyers, I suppose, were children once. I am determined that my children shall be brought up in their father's religion, if they can find out what it is. The beggar is the only person in the universe not obliged to study appearance. Borrowers of books, those mutilators of collections, spoilers of the symmetry of shelves, and creators of odd volumes. Why are we never quite at ease in the presence of a schoolmaster? Because we are conscious that he is not quite at his ease in ours. He is awkward, and out of place in the society of his equals. He comes like Gulliver from among his little people, and he cannot fit the stature of his understanding to yours. To be sick is to enjoy monarchical prerogatives.

The Old Familiar Faces
By Charles Lamb
I HAVE had playmates, I have had companions,
In my days of childhood, in my joyful school-days
All, all are gone, the old familiar faces.
I have been laughing, I have been carousing,
Drinking late, sitting late, with my bosom cronies
All, all are gone, the old familiar faces. I loved a Love once, fairest among women: Closed are her doors on me, I must not see her All, all are gone, the old familiar faces. I have a friend, a kinder friend has no man: Like an ingrate, I left my friend abruptly; Left him, to muse on the old familiar faces. Ghost-like I paced round the haunts of my childhood, Earth seem'd a desert I was bound to traverse, Seeking to find the old familiar faces. Friend of my bosom, thou more than a brother, Why wert not thou born in my father's dwelling? So might we talk of the old familiar faces How some they have died, and some they have left me

Als Literaturkritiker machte sich Lamb einen Namen durch seine "Specimens of English Dramatic Poets who Lived about the Time of Shakespeare" (1808).
