For a complete treatise on the subject the reader may be referred to The Book of Knots, being a Complete Treatise on the Art of Cordage, illustrated by 172 Diagrams, showing the Manner of making every Knot, Tie an-I Splice, by Tom Bowling (London, 1890). Mathematical Theory of Knots. In the scientific sense a knot is an endless physical line which cannot be deformed into a circle. A physical line is flexible and inextensible, and cannot be cut—so that no lap of it can be drawn through another. The most extensive dissertation on the properties of knots is that of Peter Guthrie Tait (Trans. Roy. Soc. Edin., xxviii. 145, where the substance of a number of papers in the Proceedings of the same society is reproduced). It was for the most part written in ignorance of the work of Listing, and was suggested by an inquiry concerning vortex atoms. Tait starts with the almost self-evident proposition that, if any plane closed curve have double points only, in passing continuously along the curve from one of these to the same again an even number of double points has been passed through. Hence the crossings may be taken alternately over and under. On this he bases a scheme for the representation of knots of every kind, and employs it to find all the distinct forms of knots which have, in their simplest projec FIG. 49. FIG. 50. FIG. 51. The early Viking/Norman/French surname of Cnolle. "The name carries us to the gently rising slopes in the woods, grassy and free of timber, the old form of Knowles being de la Cnolle which means of the hill." Also termed as at the knoll or summit. Early Norman/French versions of the surname are: Robert de la Cnolle: 1185, Thomas Knolle: 1279, Sir Robert Knowles: 1317. By the early 700's, the Vikings' ship building technology had developed the capability to allow masts and sails on their ships. This advancement allowed them to travel farther distances, and they begin attacks on Ireland in 795. The native Irish did not build towns. It was the Vikings who established Dublin and Limerick and other towns and villages in Ireland. The Vikings (Norsemen) were often called Danes by the Irish, but the majority were Norwegian. The land of the Vikings was called "Lochlann".

Richard Brinsley Sheridan
JAMES SHERIDAN KNOWLES
(1784 - 1862) actor and author
Born 12 th May 1784, Cork Born the son of a schoolmaster and lexicographer, James Knowles, who was a first cousin of Richard Brinsley Sheridan. The family moved to London and James graduated in medicine at Aberdeen University. He soon abandoned medicine and took to the stage. Finding that this gave him only a precarious living, he opened a school at Belfast and later at Glasgow. He wrote a number of plays, two novels, and some poetry. Two of his plays in particular, The Hunchback (1832) and The Love Chase (1837), were extremely popular, and he was considered the most successful dramatist of his day. In 1844 he became a Baptist preacher and denounced Catholicism but avoided preaching against the stage. He received a civil list pension of £200 in 1848 and died at Torquay, 30 November 1862. http://members.aol.com/clasz/Chap12.html
CHAPTER TWELVE Romanticism* Introduction - In theatre the period between 1770 and 1830 covers the Romantic* movement which rises in Germany and spreads to France and England. As with other artistic movements it is in part a reaction against the past and in part a way of expressing the central preoccupations of the times. The artistic past of French Neoclassicism* has grown stale in endless repetition and imitation across the earthier and more robust culture of Germanic cities and towns. The Enlightenment*, with its preoccupation with reason, has provided little in the way of exciting theatre fare. The new obsession sweeping the western world is passionate nationalism and a desire to throw off the old authoritarian way of doing things. The ideas of the Age of Reason* engender a belief in the rights and powers of the people (the "Rights of Man") to have a social contract with their rulers so that the individual (the noble savage) can flourish. The noble savage, being good and noble by nature, relies on instinct rather than on learned societal behavior to rise to fulfill his destiny. Society is looking for heroes to lead it into the future.* "Folk genius" The notion of "folk genius", a sort of inborn, native, intuitive ability to do magnificent things, becomes a guiding light for the rising Romantic movement. Some of the thinkers of the preceding Age of Reason* are particularly significant in laying the basis for this aspect of the new movement.
