Inaugural Address of William Henry Harrison
THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 1841
Called from a retirement which I had supposed was to continue for the residue of my life to fill the chief executive office of this great and free nation, I appear before you, fellow-citizens, to take the oaths which the Constitution prescribes as a necessary qualification for the performance of its duties; and in obedience to a custom coeval with our Government and what I believe to be your expectations I proceed to present to you a summary of the principles which will govern me in the discharge of the duties which I shall be called upon to perform. It was the remark of a Roman consul in an early period of that celebrated Republic that a most striking contrast was observable in the conduct of candidates for offices of power and trust before and after obtaining them, they seldom carrying out in the latter case the pledges and promises made in the former. However much the world may have improved in many respects in the lapse of upward of two thousand years since the remark was made by the virtuous and indignant Roman, I fear that a strict examination of the annals of some of the modern elective governments would develop similar instances of violated confidence. The broad foundation upon which our Constitution Constitution Constitution Constitution is written, disputes have arisen as to the amount of power which it has actually granted or was intended to grant.

Biography
Quick Facts The Presidents EA Contents WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON
Thursday, March 4, 1841

President Harrison has the dual distinction among all the Presidents of giving the longest inaugural speech and of serving the shortest term of office. Known to the public as "Old Tippecanoe," the former general of the Indian campaigns delivered an hour-and-forty-five-minute speech in a snowstorm. The oath of office was administered on the East Portico of the Capitol by Chief Justice Roger Taney. The 68-year-old President stood outside for the entire proceeding, greeted crowds of well-wishers at the White House later that day, and attended several celebrations that evening. One month later he died of pneumonia. However much the world may have improved in many respects in the lapse of upward of two thousand years since the remark was made by the virtuous and indignant Roman, I fear that a strict examination of the annals of some of the modern elective governments would develop similar instances of violated confidence.

    http://hereditarytitles.com/Page18.html
Knights Knighthood was a medieval institution of chivalry of both a religious and military character. Its birth and growth in Europe is obscure. It was conferred upon sovereigns, princes, and others of noble rank, but not on ecclesiastics. The word has an affinity with horsemanship, a Roman knight eques , a horseman, held rank next below the Senatorial. The name thus indicates its original occupation as a military equestrian, hence the German Ritter and the French Chevalier. In old English cnight meant at first a youth or military follower, and later a trusted servant. Knighthood was introduced to England at least as early as the reign of Alfred the Great, who made his grandson, Athelstan, a knight, and gave him a scarlet mantle set with precious stones and a sword with a golden scabbard. With the arrival of the Normans, knights formed an integral part of the feudal system. In William the Conqueror's time there were about 5,000 knights who served as fighting men under the command of the King's Barons. The Barons granted them some of their lands in return for military service when required, i.e. by knight-service by payment of money known as scutage or shield money. Henceforward those in possession of knights fees did not necessarily take up knighthood. Those eligible received knighthood on coming of age, As a result of this system, landless knights for service in the field came into existence, from whom evolved the knights bachelor.
