Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
Context for "I Have a Dream" Content for "I Have a Dream" "I Have a Dream" has been misconstrued and sentimentalized by some who focus only on the dream. The first half of the speech does not portray an American dream but rather catalogues an American nightmare. In the manner of Old Testament prophets, Frederick Douglass's "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" oration and Vernon Johns, King excoriated a nation that espoused equality while forcing blacks onto "a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity." Context for "I've Been to the Mountaintop" By the time of King's final speech, the heyday of the civil rights movement was over. Large riots in major cities and the divisive issue of the Vietnam War had shattered the liberal consensus for civil rights and created an atmosphere of crisis. From "Letter From Birmingham Jail" You express a great deal of anxiety over our willingness to break laws. This is certainly a legitimate concern. Since we so diligently urge people to obey the Supreme Court's decision of 1954 outlawing segregation in the public schools, at first glance it may seem rather paradoxical for us consciously to break laws. One may won ask: "How can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others?" The answer lies in the fact that there fire two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the Brat to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that "an unjust law is no law at all" Let us consider a more concrete example of just and unjust laws. An unjust law is a code that a numerical or power majority group compels a minority group to obey but does not make binding on itself. This is difference made legal. By the same token, a just law is a code that a majority compels a minority to follow and that it is willing to follow itself. This is sameness made legal. Let me give another explanation. A law is unjust if it is inflicted on a minority that, as a result of being denied the right to vote, had no part in enacting or devising the law. Who can say that the legislature of Alabama which set up that state's segregation laws was democratically elected? Throughout Alabama all sorts of devious methods are used to prevent Negroes from becoming registered voters, and there are some counties in which, even though Negroes constitute a majority of the population, not a single Negro is registered. Can any law enacted under such circumstances be considered democratically structured?

My parents raised me to believe that I could be anything I wanted to be and do anything I wanted. They also taught me that the color of a persons skin didn't matter. This may sound very naive to you. But that is always the way I have felt. We are all created equal in the eyes of the Lord. We are all His children. Remember the song from when you were younger all the children of the world....... Red, and yellow, black and white Jesus loves the little children of the world." Some people are born "color blind". Oh, that we could raise our children to be "color blind in their heart". Let us strive to be the kind of people who look at the inside and only see the best in others. As a Christian I am glad that the Lord loves me unconditionally. He sees my heart and knows the secret thoughts along with my past BUT He loves us in spite of it all. "Beloved, let us love one another. For love is of God and anyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God for God is Love. So beloved, let us love one another."
Do YOU know your neighbors? God's Word says to "Love your neighbor as yourself". WOW. If we don't even know our neighbors what does that say about ourselves. A real example of a GOOD Neighbor is the story of the GOOD Samaritan that Jesus told us. Luke 10:29-37

Nothing pains some people more than having to think. Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted. All progress is precarious, and the solution of one problem brings us face to face with another problem. There is nothing more tragic than to find an individual bogged down in the length of life, devoid of breadth.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr.
Religious leader; civil rights/human rights activist; author/poet; labor activist; organization executive/founder; minister; antiwar activist Married by then, King returned South, accepting the pastorate of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. It was here that he made his first mark on the civil rights movement, by mobilizing the black community during a 382-day boycott of the city's bus lines. Working through the Montgomery Improvement Association, King overcame arrest and other violent harassment, including the bombing of his home. Ultimately, the U.S. Supreme Court declared the Alabama laws requiring bus segregation unconstitutional, with the result that blacks were allowed to ride Montgomery buses on equal footing with whites. A national hero and a civil rights figure of growing importance, King summoned together a number of black leaders in 1957 and laid the groundwork for the organization now known as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Elected its president, he soon sought to assist other communities in the organization of protest campaigns against discrimination, and in voter-registration activities as well.

Archives Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) Message from Commissioner Raymond Kelly On Monday, January 15, the nation will celebrate the birth, life, and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the King holiday observance. Dr. King's compelling vision of an America free of the bias, intolerance, and injustice that was so at odds with its founding principle of equality captured the moral conscience of our nation and our world. He depicted that vision most clearly in his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., nearly four decades ago. Then, Dr. King's words and his other speeches and essays were catalysts for historic social change in America. Today, they remind us that despite vast progress, there is still much to be done in our workplace, in our communities, and in our society at large to advance his goals. They remind us that equality and justice can only take firm root through a vigilant examination of our conscience and reflection on the basic human dignity Dr. King espoused. I hope every Customs employee will take a few moments over the next days to remember the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Quotes
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools. Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illumines it. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. In dangerous valleys and hazardous pathways, the true neighbor will lift some bruised and beaten brother to a higher and more noble life. Only in the darkness can you see the stars. If a man is called to be a streetsweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven played music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great streetsweeper who did his job well. Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.
