Diane Weber May is finally behaving like May. These past few days we have had beautiful spring days here in the Northeast warm but with a nip in the air cool but with the sun hinting of the summer to come. Last weekend it was summer early- hot and humid, and in the 90's immediately followed by several days of cold and rain, with the temperature dropping into the 40's and 50's. The flowers have loved the weather, however; we have tulips coming up in the yard in places we forgot we had planted them it has been so many years since they reared their pink and golden heads! Hopefully, May is done sporting with us, and we'll have smooth sailing from now on, into the summer months. This May, here are some of the things our readers have been wondering about: Finding Poems Do you know of a poem called "Continental Drift" and where could I get a copy? It has sentimental value for me. Shiela Shiela, I don't know if this is the poem you were looking for, but it is the one I thought of immediately when I read your question.... and it drove me crazy til I found it! Please let me know if this is the one you wanted. Thanks

Died: 1st July 1916 (first day of the Battle of the Somme)
Aged 23 years
Lieutenant
William Noel Hodgson was a Georgian poet in the style of Rupert Brooke . He volunteered in 1914, and served with the Devonshire Regiment. In September, 1915, during the Battle of Loos, "[u]nder heavy enemy fire Hodgson, three other young officers and a hundred men held a captured trench for 36 hours without reinforcements or food. Hodgson was awarded the Military Cross" (Powell, A Deep Cry 99). Marching out of this hell-hole, Hodgson composed the incredibly resilient " Back to Rest ." In 1916, Hodgson began writing stories, poems, and essays about the front under the pseudonym "Edward Melbourne." Hodgson was especially fond of telling tales about his resourceful "batman" (his aide). His pieces enjoyed an audience in the leading magazines of the day. As his unit waited to move up to its jumping off position at the Somme Offensive, Hodgson composed his last poem " Before Action ." On July 1st, Hodgson's battalion attacked the German trenches south of Mametz. "At the end of the day the bodies of 159 men, including Noel Hodgson were found. The body of Hodgson's batman was lying at his side. The men of the 9th Battalion were buried in their Mansel Copse trench, and a notice above the trench read: "The Devonshires held this trench. The Devonshires hold it still" (Powell

Even though Bobby Troup never got around to writing about Kings Highway in Brooklyn, in many ways it is every bit the mother road that Route 66 is! Kings Highway in 1900 The road we know today as Kings Highway Sunrise Highway and doesn't end until it almost reaches the southern fork of Long Island!
So in many ways, Kings Highway can be called Brooklyn's Mother Road. Not only does it parent some of Long Island's most important roads...Kings Highway itself has been around for over 200 years bearing that name, and it was the road that connected Kings County's earliest settlements. Prior to that, it was a trail used by the Canarsee Indians long before European settlers arrived. As a matter of fact Kings Highway might just be the very first road in the United States to be officially referred to as a "highway." Early records show that Governor Peter Stuyvesant of the New Amsterdam colony first referred to it as "Highway" in a document dated June 4, 1654, in a grant. Later documents call it The Cross Road. According to some sources, Kings Highway got its present name during the colonial period and is named for King George III ...the monarch the nascent United States rebelled against in 1776!

Joyce Kilmer (1886 - 1918) - Author of Trees and Other Poems
Biography

"Trees"
Joyce Kilmer is best known for his poem "Trees." Legends have grown up all over the country around certain trees that are reputed to be the tree that inspired the poem; people often write to me asking for verification of their local version. According to my Dad, Joyce Kilmer's eldest son, Joyce was writing about trees in general, not about any particular tree. Joyce was living in Mahwah, New Jersey, at the time he wrote the poem (February 2, 1913). "It was in an upstairs bedroom... which served as Mother's and Dad's bedroom and also as Dad's office.... The window looked out down a hill, on our well-wooded lawn - trees of many kinds, from mature trees to thin saplings: oaks, maples, black and white birches, and I don't know what else." - Memories of my Father, Joyce Kilmer ; Kenton Kilmer, 1993. I don't actively discourage the legends because they encourage environmental passion, but I also value accuracy, so I've provided the facts as I know them for those who seek.
It is dangerous to argue with the judgment of the people, but I can’t help agreeing with Aline Kilmer, his widow, and with their eldest son (my father, Kenton Kilmer), both of whom expressed a preference for some of his lesser-known works such as "Delicatessen" and "A Blue Valentine." My own favorite varies each time I re-read his work. Though some call him a "great poet," I believe it is fair to say that his work showed promise; that had he not been struck down in his prime, his talent would most likely have developed in later years into something approaching greatness. I really love his letters and his
