41. John F. Kennedy
John F. Kennedy (19171963) John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963) was the 35thPresident of the United States. His presidency lasted from 1961 until 1963.
http://david.snu.edu/~dwilliam.fs/s98/cuba/KENNEDY.HTML
John F. Kennedy Kennedy entered politics in 1944. After he became a congressman in 1953, he married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier. After Congress had recessed for the summer, Kennedy met with his doctors to discuss options of how to eliminate his back pain. The doctors suggested that Kennedy should have two disks in his spine fused. Since Kennedy suffered from Addison’s disease, the surgery would be risky because he was susceptible to infections. Three days after the surgery, Kennedy got a severe infection. His condition became so critical that his family was called to be with him. Kennedy survived the scare and recovered after a few months. Kennedy won the 1960 presidential election by 113,000 votes over the Republican candidate Richard Nixon. While in office, Kennedy asked Congress to allow equal opportunity for blacks including the right to vote, attend public schools, access to public accommodations, and the right to the same jobs as whites. John and Jacqueline Kennedy had three children together- Caroline, John Jr., and Patrick. Unfortunately, Patrick died in 1963 shortly after he was born. He had been born with a lung ailment. There were many significant happenings in foreign affairs during Kennedy’s presidency. The Bay of Pigs as well as the Cuban Missile Crisis were two prominent military affairs. The Cuban Missile crisis was probably the world’s closest approach to a nuclear war. In 1960, Cuba was going to be supplied with nuclear missiles that would impose a close threat to the U.S. The Bay of Pigs was an attempt of the U.S. to overthrow Castro and Communism at the same time. Kennedy felt terrible about the failed attack on Cuba. He was quoted as saying, “How could I have been so stupid?”

Go to Content Home Spring 2003 "The rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened." John F. Kennedy, June 11, 1963 "Genuine peace must be the product of many nations, the sum of many acts. It must be dynamic, not static, changing to meet the challenge of each generation." John F. Kennedy, June 10, 1963 In the span of two days in June of 1963, President Kennedy gave two major addresses - at American University on the quest for world peace, and a nationally televised address in which he defined the civil rights crisis as "a moral question" facing the country. As we prepare to commemorate the 40th anniversary of these two speeches, as well as the March on Washington and the signing of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, our spring series focuses on two special themes, Seeking Common Ground: Civil Rights and Human Rights and On the Brink. Facing the Threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction. We will also continue our ongoing examination of the presidency and the men who have occupied (and wish to occupy) our nation's highest office. The Civil Rights Movement: 1963 This spring, the Kennedy Library will sponsor a series of forums with civil rights leaders such as Diane Nash, James Lawson, and John Lewis as they reflect back on the pivotal confrontations that occurred in 1963. From the non-violent protests in Birmingham Alabama in April to the March on Washington in August, these commemorations will chronicle the events that prompted President Kennedy to introduce the civil rights bill of 1963 and discuss the reactions of civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr. to the proposed legislation.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy

    John F. Kennedy (1917-1963)
  • Education and Occupations:
      Education:
He attended Choate prep school from 1931-1935. During the summer of 1935, he attended the London School of Economics. He enrolled in Princeton University in the fall of 1935, but a reoccurrence of jaundice forced his withdrawal in December. He went to Stanford University from 1936-1940. He studied briefly, 1940-1941, at Stanford Business School.
      Occupations:
Kennedy served in the navy from 1941-1945 during World War II, rising from the rank of ensign to lieutenant. He worked briefly as a journalist following his discharge from the navy. Kennedy served as a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts' Eleventh District from 1947-1953. While in the House, Kennedy maintained a moderately liberal voting record and he was on the House Education and Labor Committee. He remained aloof of party structure, and he won a reputation as something of an iconoclast, and he caused waves in the house when he lashed out against the American Legion. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1953-1961. He served on the Government Operations Committee, the Labor and Public Welfare Committee, the Foreign Relations Committee, and the Joint Economic Committee. He consistently voted for prolabor legislation, he was critical of Cold War diplomacy (especially Secretary of State John Foster Dulles), and he warned of the "Red tide of Communism" threatening Southeast Asia.

This photograph represents a story, the unfolding of the fabulous fate of association between Eleanor Roosevelt and the campaigning Kennedy. Originally, this photo was taken while Kennedy was on a visit to Hyde park in 1960; Kennedy was probably seeking support from the politically influential woman. Prior to this visit, Eleanor Roosevelt, who had been a strong supporter of Adlai Stevenson, had not used her considerable influence on Kennedy's behalf. '"Privately she withheld active support for the nominee until the two met in Hyde Park and she was assured that he intended to make the best possible use of men like Stevenson and Chester Bowles. Kennedy came away from his meeting absolutely smitten with this woman' according to William Walton, his New York coordinator, who accompanied him. She [Eleanor] agreed to do whatever he wanted in the campaign. She spoke in New York, which was one of the decisive states. She praised him in her column. She proffered advicethrough Franklin Jr. and by lettercautioning him on his declared policy toward Cuba and warning him against 'last minute' tricks by Richard Nixon."'

Thirty fifth President of the Unites States. Kennedy faced down Nakita S. Khrushchev, Soviet Prime Minister and First Secretary of the Communist Party. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, Kennedy reinvigorated NASA and signed the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
Kennedy's own personal copy of his work The Strategy of Peace, "Best wishes John Kennedy", on the front page, (Moffett Naval Air Field, Mountain View , California, November 2, 1960). This item's history is well documented in the form of a letter of provenance and several copies of newspaper clippings. The letter of provenance accompanying the book describes the circumstances of its acquisition. The book was obtained onboard Senator Kennedy's plane at Moffett Navel Air Field in Mountain View, California on November 2, 1960 six days before Kennedy won the election. A charity organization, seeking hats of famous people for an auction was allowed access to Kennedy's plane, Kennedy did not have a hat so instead he signed the book for them.
Signed on the half title page. The book also contains five pages upon which Kennedy has written several words, made many notations and has amended text, concerning his feelings about Russia, Nikita Khrushchev and arms control. Perhaps using it as a reference in preparation of a speech during his months on the campaign trail. On November 2, 1960 Kennedy addressed 30,000 supporters at the Cow Palace in San Francisco and first proposed the establishment of the Peace Corp. On January 20, 1961 in his inaugural address Kennedy further alluded to Russian relations and arms control.

The Berlin Wall, which encircled the Western part of the divided city, was still in its infancy, and Kennedy denounced it as a symbol of the failure of communism. His short speech is printed here in its entirety. Kennedy was assassinated five months later. I am proud to come to this city as the guest of your distinguished mayor, who has symbolized throughout the world the fighting spirit of West Berlin. And I am proud to visit the Federal Republic with your distinguished chancellor who for so many years has committed Germany to democracy and freedom and progress, and to come here in the company of my fellow American, Gen.
