JOHN F. KENNEDY
Kennedy, John Fitzgerald (1917-1963)
John F. Kennedy was born 29 May 1917 to a politically prominent, wealthy Boston family. As a child, Kennedy enjoyed the privileges of an elite education, eventually graduating from Harvard University in 1938. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Kennedy followed his father's entry into politics. Following three terms in the House of Representatives, Kennedy won a Senate seat in 1952. Kennedy remained in the Senate for eight years and in 1960, secured the Democratic Party's nomination for president. The 1960 presidential campaign, which pitted Kennedy against Richard Nixon, proved to be one of the closest elections in U.S. history, one in which Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement played a pivotal role. After King's 1960 arrest in Georgia, Kennedyfollowing the recommendations of campaign advisorscalled Coretta King to offer his support and used his influence to secure King's release from Reidsville Prison. As a result, Kennedy garnered a large amount of support from the black community. While King chose to remain publicly impartial, he privately voiced support for Kennedy. On election day, Kennedy defeated Nixon by less than 1% of the popular vote, a margin of victory that highlighted the importance of African-American support. Immediately after his election, Kennedy proceeded cautiously with respect to civil rights. Despite pleas from King and other civil rights leaders for federal intervention during the controversy surrounding the

    John Fitzgerald Kennedy
American President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 1917-1963 Among his many distinctions as President of the United States of America, John Fitzgerald Kennedy remains the youngest man ever elected to the office of Chief Executive, and the youngest man to die while still fulfilling his duties. Serving as America's President, John F. Kennedy held his office for 1,000 days, dying November 22nd, 1963, assassinated at the age of 46. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29th, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts, the 2nd son of 9 children of the affluent, Roman Catholic Kennedy Family. Kennedy's father, Joseph Patrick Kennedy was a self-improving multi-millionaire who had built a financial empire through ventures in banking, the stock market, ship building and the motion picture industry and liquor distribution. Kennedy's mother, Rose Fitzgerald was of Irish ancestry like her husband, and daughter of former Boston mayor John F. Fitzgerald. As family patriarch Joseph Kennedy was a hard task master who pushed his children to achieve and often pitted them against one another competitively. John Kennedy's childhood was one spent at exclusive private schools, including Canturbury School of New Milford, CT and preparatory school at Choate Hall in Wallingford, CT. At the age of 18 John Kennedy spent a year at the London School of Economics while Joseph Kennedy served as the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. Kennedy returned to America to attend Princeton University, but left during his freshman term due to a case of severe jaundice. His illness may have been caused by a condition the Kennedy family kept secret throughout his life: John Kennedy was of the 1 in 100,000 people afflicted with

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, (1917-1963), 35th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . The youngest ever elected to the presidency and the first of the Roman Catholic faith, John F. Kennedy won the ELECTION of November 1960 by a razor-thin margin, but after taking office he received the support of most Americans. They admired his winning personality, his lively family, his intelligence, and his tireless energy, and they respected his courage in time of decision. During his relatively brief term of officeless than three yearsPresident Kennedy dealt with severe challenges in Cuba, Berlin, and elsewhere. A nuclear test ban treaty in 1963 brought about a relaxation in cold war tensions following a time of severe confrontation early in the administration. Domestically, much of the Kennedy program was unfulfilled, brought to fruition only in the Johnson administration. The U.S. space program, however, surged ahead during the Kennedy administration, scoring dramatic gains that benefited American prestige worldwide. An assassin's bullet cut short Kennedy's term as president. On Nov. 22, 1963, the young president was shot to death while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. As the nation joined in mourning, dignitaries from around the world gathered at his funeral in Washington to pay their respects. Mayor Willy Brandt of West Berlin expressed the world's sense of loss when he said that "a flame went out for all those who had hoped for a just peace and a better life."

The Christchurch Star and the assassination of John F. Kennedy, 1963.
    President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963)
The New Zealand perspective Translated to New Zealand time, the Kennedy assassination took place at 7.30 am, Saturday, 23 November 1963. Oswald was taken into custody at 8.50 am, at first charged with the shooting of Dallas Patrolman J D Tippit. The press knew of Oswald's being in custody by 10 am and could begin gathering information about him. The Christchurch Star was published in the early afternoon.
    Christchurch Star connection
Preoccupation with the Christchurch Star connection had existed since 1963 but intensified with the release in 1992 of Oliver Stone's movie JFK, which puts forward a conspiracy view of the assassination. It uses, as part of its evidence, the front page of the Star of 23 November 1963. There were claims that the Star coverage contained information which was pre-packaged by conspirators prior to the assassination taking place and distributed in the US and then sent out to New Zealand very soon after the event. They say Oswald's background was reported far too quickly and it must have been a CIA-planted cover story.

    Thirty-fifth President (1961-1963)
When an assassin's bullet cut short John Kennedy's presidency in November 1963, the country experienced a collective sense of loss that it had not known since the death of Lincoln. But the grief was not so much inspired by a long litany of presidential accomplishments as it was an expression of what Kennedy had come to represent. To be sure, his administration could claim notable triumphs in foreign policy, including its successful face-off with the Soviets over the presence of missiles in Cuba. Its support for the civil rights movement had, moreover, contributed significantly to a climate that would soon give birth to landmark legislation promoting racial equality. The main source of grief over Kennedy's death, however, was the eloquence and vigorous idealism that he had brought to his presidency and that made him, in the eyes of many, the embodiment of this country's finest aspirations. When artist Elaine de Kooning arranged for sittings with Kennedy in late 1962, she intended to complete a single portrait, destined for the Harry S. Truman Library. But, fascinated with the changeability of Kennedy's features, she instead painted an entire series of likenesses, including the full-length image here. In its loose, almost chaotic brushwork, the portrait bears witness to de Kooning's close identification with the Abstract Expressionists of the 1950s.

Based on an oil sketch for which John F. Kennedy posed in 1962, this portrait underscores the youthful vitality that was such an important part of Kennedy's charisma. But his health was never as robust as it seemed. Among his recurring ailments were back difficulties that were the source of frequent and severe pain.

Served as President from 1961 to 1963 John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963), was the youngest man ever elected president, and he was the youngest ever to die in office. He was shot to death on Nov. 22, 1963, after two years and 10 months as chief executive. The world mourned Kennedy's death, and presidents, premiers, and members of royalty walked behind the casket at his funeral. Kennedy was succeeded as president by Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Kennedy won the presidency with his "New Frontier" program, after a series of television debates with his opponent, the then Republican Vice President Richard M. Nixon. At 43, Kennedy was the youngest man ever elected president. (Theodore Roosevelt was 42 when he became president upon the death of William McKinley, and was not elected president until he was 46.) Kennedy, a Democrat from Massachusetts, was the first president of the Roman Catholic faith. He also was the first president born in the 1900's.
In his inaugural address, President Kennedy declared that "a new generation of Americans" had taken over leadership of the country. He said Americans would "... pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty." He told Americans: "Ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country."
