St. Catherine of Sienna
A Doctor of the Church, St. Catherine of Sienna is one of the most revered theologians of the Church. A nun who was an advisor to the Pope, she was also known for her visions. The Dialogue was dictated while in such an ecstatic state.
St. Ignatius of Loyola, S.J.
While recovering from a canon injury, Ignatius of Loyola studyied the lives of Christ and the saints. Deciding the saints' examples were worth following, he began his life-long spiritual quest. On the way he founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), the largest order of the Church. He also wrote The Spiritual Exercises , a classic work of Catholic spirituality.

Romain J. v.d.

The Imitation of Christ, by Thomas à Kempis (13801471) A classic devotionalwork, still in print and widely available in book shops.

The Medieval Churchmen
"That . . . you might learn not to exceed
what is written" (1 Corinthians 4:6).
he Dark Ages ushered in some dubious trends in theology. Medieval theologians seemed uncertain of how to sort out Scripture from tradition. Whereas the early Ecumenical Church Councils had invariably settled matters on the basis of Scripture, theology in the middle ages began to treat church tradition and ecclesiastical authority as tantamount to the Word of God. (This view was later formally ratified as official Catholic doctrine by the Council of Trent.)
Despite the ruling against semi-Pelagianism by the Council of Orange in 529 A.D., subtle semi-Pelagian tendencies began to infiltrate the church, so that by the time of Trent in the late sixteenth century, the Catholic Church took a position that was almost pure semi-Pelagianism.
During this period, monasticism was on the rise, and Scholasticism became the predominant approach to theology. Scholastic theology relied heavily on speculation and philosophy. Taken to an extreme, it ultimately turned the discipline of theology into pure sophistry. It broadened the gap between clergy and laity, and finally gave rise to the brand of Catholicism against which the Reformers rebelled.
Thomas Aquinas (1225-74), the Master theologian of the Catholic Church, is the dominant figure of this era. In Thomas most of the seeds of Tridentine Catholicism are found. He backed away from Augustine's strong emphasis on the grace of God in salvation. Thomas seemed to see salvation as more of a cooperative effort between God and the sinner.

Excerpts From:
Why ' Spiritual Lite ' Books Don't Feed the Soul By Marci Whitney-Schenck
The sale of religious books has increased 52 percent between 1993 and 1997, launching the careers of such authors as [Thomas] Moore, whose Care of the Soul was on the New York Times' list for forty-six weeks. The phenomenally successful team of Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen has produced multiple servings of Chicken Soup for the Soul . Self-help guru Iyanla Vanzant, a former welfare mother and abused wife, has hit instant success with Acts of Faith: Daily Meditations for People of Color Few of these popular best sellers mention Jesus, sacrifice, sin, or redemption. Called by some "spiritually-lite," these books have their defenders. ... But can books like the Chicken Soup series really satisfy spiritual hunger? The stories certainly uplift and speak of human kindness, but can they "sustain ... in times of challenge, frustration, and failure" as the introduction [to A Cup of Chicken Soup for the Soul ] claims? Knowing that people can be nice to each other is an assurance of Christ's love on earth, but can this knowledge alone give us the theology to sustain us during times of despair. ... What is troubling about many of these books is that conclusions are reached so glibly, without explanation.

LISTENING TO GOD Psalm 85:8 I will listen to what God the Lord will say; he promises peace to his people, his saints but let them not return to folly. NIV “I will hear what the Lord God will speak in me.” Blessed is the soul who hears the Lord speaking within her, who receives the word of consolation from his lips. Blessed are the ears that catch the accents of divine whispering, and pay no heed to the murmurings of this world. Blessed indeed are the ears that listen, not to the voice which sounds without, but to the truth which teaches within. Blessed are the eyes which are closed to exterior things and are fixed upon those which are interior. Blessed are they who penetrate inwardly, who try daily to prepare themselves more and more to understand mysteries. Blessed are they who long to give their time to God, and who cut themselves off from the hindrances of the world. Consider these things, my soul, and close the door of your senses, so that you can hear what the Lord your God speaks within you. “I am your salvation,”

Libro I INCOMINCIANO LE ESORTAZIONI UTILI PER LA VITA DELLO SPIRITO Capitolo I L'IMITAZIONE DI CRISTO E IL DISPREZZO DI TUTTE LE VANITA' DEL MONDO
  • Vanità è dunque ricercare le ricchezze, destinate a finire, e porre in esse le nostre speranze. Vanità è pure ambire agli onori e montare in alta condizione.

Author of the "Imitation of Christ" , born at Kempen in the Diocese of Cologne , in 1379 or 1380; died 25 July, 1471. His parents, John and Gertrude Haemerken, were of the artisan class; it is said that Gertrude kept the village school, and most probably the father worked in metals, a common calling in Kempen, whence perhaps the surname Haemerken, or Haemerlein, Latinized Malleolus Christians at Jerusalem and Antioch in the first. It owed its inception to the fervid preaching of the Deacon Gerard Groote, its further organization to the prudence and generous devotedness of Florentius Radewyn. Its associates were called the "Devout Brothers and Sisters", also the "Brothers and Sisters of the Common Life". They took no vows, but lived a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience, as far as was compatible with their state, some in their own homes and others, especially clerics, in community. They were forbidden to beg, but all were expected to earn their living by the labour of their hands; for the clerics this meant chiefly the transcribing of books and the instruction of the young. All earnings were placed in a common fund, at the disposal of the superior; the one ambition of all was to emulate the life and virtues of the first Christians , especially in the love of God Jesus Christ as shown in His words and works, but especially in the sufferings of His Passion. In person Thomas is described as a man of middle height, dark complexion and vivid colouring, with a broad forehead and piercing eyes; kind and affable towards all, especially the sorrowful and the afflicted; constantly engaged in his favourite occupations of reading, writing, or prayer; in time of recreation for the most part silent and recollected, finding it difficult even to express an opinion on matters of mundane interest, but pouring out a ready torrent of eloquence when the conversation turned on

The Imitation of Christ . These meditations on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth have been prized by many people throughout the centuries. A major theme of the Imitation is that we tend to live and act unthinkingly and without a reasonable direction or plan for our lives. True enlightenment comes from self-knowledge and knowledge of and trust in God. There are even traces of Stoicism in this and in his other works, which consistently demonstrate a life devoted to piety, holiness, prayer, and mysticism. A quote of note from Kempis: "I have sought for happiness everywhere, but I have found it nowhere except in a little corner with a little book."
