I study how different kinds of performance evaluation and feedback influence an individual's intrinsic interest in an activity. For example, I study how goal-setting, rewards, and competition influence task enjoyment, and how personality variables moderate these effects. I am also interested in motivational issues in educational psychology. My graduate students and I do experimental laboratory studies as well as longitudinal studies in college classes. Books:

    Pictures, interviews/reviews.

    Pictures
The best place to find pictures of Judy Davis is at Trevor Preston's excellent Website which has an extensive archive of pictures and other information about her. There you'll also find instructions on how to join the Judy Davis mailing list. Another great Judy page can be found here . This site also has tons of pictures, so I'm not bothering to put any up here except those I personally really, really liked from their pages. That page can be found by clicking here Note : That link will not lead anywhere until this sentence is gone.) I have assembled two JD collages that can be used for Windows desktop wallpaper. Here they are. ( Note : That link will not lead anywhere until this sentence is gone.)
    Interviews/Reviews
Available on the Web are: An interview/feature with Judy from the Los Angeles Times "'She's kind of fascinating, and I actually haven't read anybody who's quite got her yet," says James Lapine, who directed Davis in the role of the scandalous writer George Sand in 'Impromptu.' 'She's definitely not in the mold. She's incredibly unique and makes no effort to be anything but who she is...'" This article is available by clicking here A mostly positive LA Times review of Judy's latest movie Children of the Revolution "Providing 'Revolution's' driving force is the whirlwind Judy Davis, who brings her trademark intensity and sense of humor to full boil here. Few actresses can get as comically riled up as Davis, and this fire-in-the-eyes part is made to order for her abilities."

[japanese pop Oh my god. This wonderful quartet has been around since 1992 and I had absolutely no idea of their brilliance until now. Sure, I may have heard them in passing on Hey Hey Hey, but I was too busy ogling SPEED or Puffy to really pay them any heed, until now. And I'm glad I did, because they totally have a mouth full of pop-rocks and soda going on, so much so that I bought 6 out of 7 of their albums in one week's time. First of all, let me make it clear that Yuki is a total babe, an amazingly avant-guarde front woman who looks and sounds great. The rest of the band started out a bit too much the Glamour Punks with the Robert Smith hair and top hats, but even from the [J.A.M.] days it was clear something special was going on. [Orange Sunshine] , their second and perhaps most satisfying pop album, is a sheer bolt from the blue, with sing-along-songs like [Radio] that get me bouncing every single time. Later albums like [The Power Source] brought in more distortion and experimentation to the mix, so that presently JAM offer the best of both worlds - high energy j-pop and j-rock that hurdles all language barriers. Overall, I think I'm most partial to

    Wavelet-base preconditioner design
I completed my PhD in June 2001, supervised by Dr K. Chen in the Applied Mathematics Division of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Liverpool University. My thesis, Wavelet-based preconditioning of dense linear systems is concerned with preconditioning techniques for non-sparse matrices that arise in certain industrial applications (in particular in Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication problems). I have given talks on my work at the 16th IMACS World Congress in Lausanne in August 2000 and at an LMS-sponsored colloquium at Liverpool in March 2000. Some of my publications in this area are available here:

Current Research: A second focus of research is the role of inflammatory cytokines in the development of chronic lung disease (CLD) of prematurity. We are exploring a possible genetic predisposition to the development of CLD by investigating the relationship between functional polymorphisms in the regulatory regions of various pro-inflammatory cytokines and the development of CLD in infants born before the 28th week of gestation.

Powell River, British Columbia Scouter's experiences.
    http://home.prcn.org/~jharcus/scouts.html
I have been involved in Scouting for several years, mostly as a leader in Powell River. I was a Cub Leader with the 1st Powell River Pack for 1 1/2 years and then a Scout Leader with the 1st Powell River Troop (which I helped start up) for 4 years. This year I've started the 9th Powell River Venturer Company as there were no Venturers in Powell River. I am also active on the District Council. I held the position of ADC Scouts for a couple of years but resigned due to other time commitments. However I still hold a position as a Member-at-Large which allows me the freedom to chose what projects interest me and I have time for. I am active in promoting Scouting and, as part of this, I have created web pages with information pertaining to Scouting in the Powell River District. I will also be putting up pages of Scouting related special events as time permits. Current pages available are: I have been part of the team who planned the 1st Annual Worldwide Jamboree on the Trail 1998 (or JOTT'98 for short). This event has been planned completely via the Internet on the scoutscan-l mailing list. Over 15,000 people registered across Canada for this April 25 event, as well as several thousand others around the world. My participation included providing information, registering groups, assisting with the design of the JOTT '98 crest and distributing crests. I will also be involved with preparing followup articles for the Leader magazine and for the JOTT web page.
