Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882-1941) Irish novelist, noted for his experimental use of language in such works as ULYSSES (1922) and FINNEGANS WAKE (1939). During his career Joyce suffered from rejections from publishers, suppression by censors, and attacks by critics, and misunderstanding by readers. Joyce's technical innovations in the art of the novel include an extensive use of interior monologue; he used a complex network of symbolic parallels drawn from the mythology, history, and literature, and created a unique language of invented words, puns, and allusions. From 1902 Joyce led a nomadic life, which perhaps reflected in his interest in the character of Odysseus. Although he spent long times in Paris, Trieste, Rome, and Zurich, with only occasional brief visit to Ireland, his native country remained basic to all his writings. "The only demand I make of my reader," Joyce once told an interviewer, "is that he should devote his whole life to reading my works." James Joyce was born in Dublin as the son of John Stanislaus Joyce, impoverished gentleman, who had failed in a distillery business and tried all kinds of professions, including politics and tax collecting. Joyce's mother, Mary Jane Murray, was ten years younger than her husband. She was an accomplished pianist, whose life was dominated by the Roman Catholic Church and her husband. In spite of the poverty, the family struggled to maintain solid middle-class facade.

James Joyce
Irish Novelist Writing in English is the most ingenious torture

James Joyce
was born on February 2, 1882 in Dublin, Ireland. His subtle yet frank portrayal of human nature, coupled with his mastery of language made him one of the most influential novelists of the 20th century. Joyce is best known for his experimental use of language and his exploration of new literary methods. His use of the literary technique, "stream-of-consciousness" reveals the flow of impressions, half thoughts, associations, hesitations, impulses, as well as the rational thoughts of his characters. The main strength of his masterpiece novel, "Ulysses" (1922) lies in the depth of character portrayed using this technique. Joyce's other major works include "Dubliners," a collection of short stories that portray his native city, a semi-autobiographical novel called "A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man" (1916), and "Finnegans Wake" (1939), an experimental novel that first appeared in the form of extracts from 1928 to 1937 as "Work in Progress." Joyce faced daunting financial and health problems while at work on "Ulysses." Between 1917 and 1930 he endured a series of 25 operations for eye diseases. Despite these problems he continued to work. He was helped by a large grant from Edith Rockefeller McCormick, and by a series of grants from Harriet Shaw Weaver, which by 1930 had amounted to more than £23,000. The generosity of these patrons resulted from their admiration of his work, and their sympathy with his difficulties.

First, an apology: The following biographies are not mine. I, um, borrowed them from other sources. I am currently planning to write a biography of my own, but I really need to re-read a few resources (Ellmann, S. Joyce, etc.) until I can feel comfortable writing something worthwhile. So until I get my act together long enough to provide something of my own, I hope these will serve. The first one deals more with Joyce's life, the second concerns his career as an author.
    I. Joyce, James Augustine
(From the Online Biographical Encyclopedia JOYCE, JAMES AUGUSTINE (1882 - 1941), one of the most radical innovators of twentieth-century writing, who dedicated himself to exuberant exploration of the total resources of language. He was born at Rathgar, a suburb of Dublin, on Feb. 2, 1882. His father, who took pride in coming of an old and substantial Cork family, had some talent as a musician and much more as a genial lounger, and was little troubled by the economic straits into which is household was drifting during his son's boyhood. Joyce was sent at first to the expensive Jesuit boarding school described in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

    James Joyce CollectionBiographical Sketch
James Augustus Aloysius Joyce was born on February 2, 1882, in Rathgar, a borough of Dublin, Ireland, the eldest of ten children who survived infancy. In 1888 he was enrolled at Clongowes Wood College, a Jesuit boarding school near Dublin, where he stayed until 1891. Thereafter he attended Belvedere College, and then University College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1902 with a major in Italian. While at UCD Joyce wrote a paper in defense of Henrik Ibsen's drama called "Drama and Life," which was suppressed by the college president on moral grounds. James Joyce's father, John Stanislaus Joyce, was a Cork man who had inherited enough property to ensure a comfortable living from rents, but his alcoholism led to a seemingly endless series of disasters which drove the family to abject poverty by the time young Joyce was mature. His mother, Mary Jane Murray, died of cancer soon after Joyce graduated from university; Joyce's autobiographical counterpart Ulysses
