Johnson, Samuel
English writer and lexicographer, a major figure in 18th-century literature as an arbiter of taste, renowned for the force and balance of his prose style.
Early Life Johnson, usually referred to as Dr. Johnson by his contemporaries and later generations, was born in Lichfield on September 18, 1709, the son of a bookseller. He attended the local school, but his real education was informal, conducted primarily among his father's books as he read and studied the classics, which influenced his style greatly.
In 1728 Johnson entered Pembroke College at the University of Oxford. A brilliant but eccentric young man, he was plagued by a variety of ailments from which he suffered the rest of his life. He left in poverty, without taking a degree and having suffered the first of two emotional breakdowns. During this time of despondency his reading of devotional literature led him to a profound religious faith.
After his father died in 1731, Johnson tried teaching and later organized a school in Lichfield. His educational ventures were not successful, however, although one of his students, David Garrick, later famous as an actor, became a lifelong friend. At the age of 26 Johnson married Elizabeth Jarvis Porter, a widow about 20 years his senior, who brought a measure of calm and self-confidence to his life.

Did you know?

Johnson suffered from bouts of extreme depression, characterised by Boswell as "a horrible hypochondria... dejection, gloom, and despair" which left him with chronic tics, possibly Tourette's Syndrome. Critical verdict Strikingly clever, startlingly ugly and indefatigably hard-working, Johnson produced his first poem at three, on "good master Duck". Like Wilde, he often gets remembered for his quotability rather than works, thanks to Boswell's biography (in fact largely reconstructed from memory). With his Lives of the Poets, edition of Shakespeare and periodical essays he advanced criticism, biography and journalism; Rasselas, written to pay for his mother's funeral, is a no-word-wasted search for human fulfilment which ends with a "conclusion, in which nothing is concluded". His great work, the Dictionary - which defines lexicographer as "a harmless drudge" - was written over nine years in one room with borrowed books and six copyists.

    Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)
Adams Anthology Main Points [notice and beware of Adams's strongly pro-Johnsonian biases]:
    • grounding of criticism on morality
    • representing general nature rather than the particular, "generalization from sense experience"; attacked by Blake: "Blake asks where except 'in the mind of a fool' such generalizations exist"
    • "common sense"
    • realistic attitude and moral concerns
    • preference for contemporaries, "closer to truth"
    • "insistence that wickedness either not be represented at all or get its just deserts"
    • time as best critical test
    • discussion of unities of action, time, place
    On Fiction (1750)
fiction should "exhibit life in its true state" comedy of romance "rules of cosmic poetry" against heroic romance, imaginative writing concerned with education of and influence on the young; "lectures of conduct"; "introductions in to life"; "nothing indecent should be suffered"; "to secure them from unjust prejudices, perverse opinions, and incongruous combinations of images" "knowledge of vice and virtue"; "power of example"

Guide to Samuel Johnson , by Jack Lynch, Rutgers University: Lynch explains this page's purpose better than I can, so I leave it to him: "This is nothing like a comprehensive guide to the literature, although I do discuss some real bibliographies. I cover a few works of scholarship, and those not necessarily my favorites they're the ones that I think are most important for a beginner to know, the most often quoted, though not always the most thought-provoking. And this guide is unabashedly opinionated, though I hope my preferences aren't often perversely far from the mainstream. Still, it might be useful for people who've received no more formal introduction to Johnson studies." Aside from Lynch's bibliographic annotations, this site also includes links to selections of Johnson's poems, political writings, fiction, periodical essays and criticism.-MJM The Life of Savage , by Samuel Johnson, Rutgers University: Jack Lynch's hypertext version of Johnson's biography. Samuel Johnson
Samuel Johnson lived by his pen from the age of 28 until he received a pension at the age of 53. He wrote essays, reviews, sermons, biographies, poetry, an edition of Shakespeare's plays and the Dictionary of the English Language . Even after financial necessity had ceased to drive him, he still produced many works, including A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland and the Lives of the Poets . The Yale collected edition will run to 24 volumes.
Of the making of books and articles about Johnson, there is no end. There are studies of every aspect of his life and work, from his prose style to his politics, from his religion to his health. No attempt has been made to deal with these here. There is a useful bibliography of secondary literature in Clingham's volume, noted below under "Starting points".
