  • George Catlin Indian Paintings Collection from the Smithsonian American Art Museum George Catlin (1796-1872) abandoned a law career to pursue his interests in art. In 1830 he met William Clark in Saint Louis and with him visited tribes living near the Mississippi River, and in 1832 he traveled up the Missouri River to Fort Union, North Dakota. His portraits of the Mandans, with whom he stayed in 1832, are today among his best-known works. By 1834, after crossing the southern plains to paint the Comanche, Catlin had visited more western tribes than had any other artist of his day. This image collection contains over 400 portraits of Native Americans and cultural documentation landscapes from the exhibition (and accompanying catalog) " George Catlin and his Indian Gallery ," organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 2002. Of particular note is the authoritative identification of the tribal affiliations of the portrait subjects.

Although they may not be your direct relatives, reading one or more could serve up insights into the historic context of your family or give you a general feeling of women's history in Canada. (Doing some early Christmas shopping? One of these might make great gift for the history or genealogy buff on your list!):

Title Author Description Price 1810-1910 Centenary Souvenir - Norwich, Ontario Norwich Gazette A history of the village of Norwich and the township of North Norwich, together with the sketches of people and enterprises. Written and compiled by the Norwich Gazette and published under authority of the council of Norwich and North Norwich. 1875 Census of Inhabitants Norwich and District Archives In late January, 1875, a census and enumeration was taken of the inhabitants of Norwichville. Eight hundred and twenty seven of the inhabitants wished to have the village incorporated as noted by petition on 28 January 1875. A day later, a second petition was read in County Council claiming that the matter hadn't received adequate consideration and that the boundaries of the proposed village were not accurate. However, the Municipal Council of the County of Oxford passed a by-law (By-law 195) to incorporate the Village of Norwich. This book lists all of the inhabitants, both pro and con the motion. It is beautifully presented on parchment paper with an index at the back. A History of East Oxford Township East Oxford Centennial Project The Old Stage Road cuts right through the top portion of East Oxford, a main transportation and supply route, and the location of many tales of hidden treasure. This fascinating book describes the township roads as well as the many villages, churches, and schools, some of which exist now, only in memory. There are some great stories included: Cassie Bigley Chadwick was born in Eastwood; the first telephone lines were strung along Thomas Hart's fence; Joe Boyle, one of only two men who returned from the Klondyke as a millionaire and who later became an adventurer and the friend of royalty, once owned a house in East Oxford.

English Renaissance Literature on the Web
by C.M. Bajetta Foreword This page (available also in Italian ) contains what I consider to be some useful links for students and scholars of Renaissance English Literature - and possibly of other periods of English Literature as well. Of course, the list is not complete: if you know of other useful sites please let me know.
What you will find here is a list of some of the most important bibliographical and reference tools, together with a series of links to pages devoted to some specific topics or authors. Some of the most popular library catalogues (such as the British Library, the Cambridge University Library, the Bodleian Library, the Library of Congress...), have been included in the list. Fuller lists of library links can be reached from some of the sites listed below. If you would like to look for other links using Alta Vista or Inference Find, please use the grids provided below , or go to the main index . You can also use the multi-search engine provided by the UCSC Web Page.
