Gray's story of Pauline Johnson best Biography yet
Pauline Johnson (1861-1913), poet, author, and actress, was one of Canada's most independent and popular personalities at the turn of the century. Much has been written about her, and her writing has been re-published regularly. Her best biography yet, the 438-page Flint and Feather: the Life and Times of E. Pauline Johnson Tekahionwake is hot off the press this month. It is written by one of Canada's premier biographers Charlotte Gray and reads easily like a novel. Gray feels that Johnson was "one of those rare, remarkable women who rise above conventions and assumptions of their day, and carve their own paths." Most people my age studied some of her poetry in school, especially "The Song My Paddle Sings," and many remember the title of one of her books, Flint and Feather. I remember that she was called a "Mohawk Princess." A Pauline Johnson Canadian stamp was produced on her 100th birthday in 1961.

Just a 20 minute drive, along a picturesque Highway 54, east of the City of Brantford , is the second oldest national historic site at Six Nations, Chiefswood, the birthplace of Famous Poetess, E.PAULINE JOHNSON
The two-storey white frame mansion overlooks the banks of the Grand River. It was here that E.Pauline Johnson,(who's Mohawk name was Tekahionwake) was born(1861 - 1913) and wrote some of her most famous poems including "The Song My Paddle Sings" as she watched the Grand River roll by from her second storey bedroom window. Today her former mansion home welcomes visitors against an elegant background of parkland. The house quickly became known as the''Indian Mansion" and is the first pre confederation Indian mansion to be built. The mansion is well known to having two front entrances and no back door.
It was said at the time the house was to face the "Indian on the river and the white man on the road." E.Pauline Johnson lived in the home for 23 years before traveling the country reading her poetry to Canadians from ocean to ocean. She is best known for her collection of poems

"Passing Through ... From Town Hall to Opera House"
by Patricia Belier originally published in
The Officers' Quarterly
v. 11, n. 3, Summer 1995, p. 10-12 The turn-of-the-century in Canada has been called "the golden age of travelling performers and reciters," several of the more famous having appeared in Fredericton, among them Pauline Johnson, one of the most popular and prominent figures in Canadian Literature and the author of six books: The White Wampum Canadian Born Legends of Vancouuer Flint and Feather The Moccasin Maker The Shagganappi Emily Pauline Johnson was born in 1861 on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario. She was the youngest of four children of Mohawk Chief George Henry Martin Johnson (1816-1884) and his English wife, Emily Susanna Howells (1824-1898). George Johnson acted as an interpreter for the local Anglican missionary in the area, Rev. Adam Elliot, and he shared the Elliot family home, as did Miss Howells, who had come to Canada in 1845 to live with her sister Eliza (Mrs. Elliot). Thus, the stage was set for the romantic union of a Mohawk chief, "Onwanonsyshon" (Lord ofthe Big House), and his bride, a woman with Quaker roots from Bristol, England. Each was a descendant of a proud and respected lineage: the Howells were merchants and distinguished political and professional figures; the Johnsons belonged to the noble families of the Iroquois Confederacy, their original name of "Tekahionwake" being dropped years earlier, the name Johnson having been offered by Sir William Johnson, an early Superintendant of Indian Affairs in British North America.

E. Pauline Johnson Tekahionawake, Double Wampum; Mohawk. (1861-1913) Emily Pauline Johnson was educated in English literary traditions by her mother. Her father, George Henry Martin Johnson, was a well-known chief of the Mohawks. Johnson wrote for an income but later became a platform performer in Canada, the US, and abroad. She was a poet, actress, and wrote in many genres. E. Pauline Johnson translates into fictional terms the clash and fears that often occurred between white and Indian cultures. QUESTION: How did white reformers expect American Indian women and girls to assimilate into white culture? Excerpt from Johnson's short story: As It Was In The Beginning ....They account for it by the fact that I am a Redskin, but I am something else, tooI am a woman. I remember the first time I saw him. He cam up the trial with some Hudson's Bay trappers, and they stopped at the door of my father's tepee. He seemed even then, fourteen years agao, an old man; his hair seemed just as thin and white, his hands just as trembling and fleshless as they were a month since, when I saw him for what I pray his God is the last time. My father sat in the tepee, polishing buffalo horns and smoking; my mother, wrapped in her blanket, crouched over her quill-work, on the buffalo-skin at his side; I was lunging at the doorway, idling watching, as I always watched, the thin, distant line of sky and prairie; wondering, as I always wondered, what lay beyond it. Then he came, this gentle old man with his white hair and thin, pale face. He wore a long black coat, which I now know was the sign of his office, and he carried a black leather-covered book, which, in all the years I have known him, I have never seen him without.

Paddling Her Own Canoe:
The Times and Texts of E. Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake)
Carole Gerson and Veronica Strong-Boag
"Frequently dismissed as a 'nature poet' and an 'Indian Princess,' E. Pauline Johnson (1861-1913) was not only an accomplished thinker and writer but a contentious and passionate personality who 'talked back' to Euro-Canadian cuture. This volume is the only major scholarly study that examines Johnson's diverse roles as a First Nations champion, New Woman, serious writer and performer, and Canadian nationalist. A Native advocate of part-Mohawk ancestry, Johnson was also an independent, self-supporting, unmarried woman during the period of first-wave feminism. Her versatile writings range from highly erotic poetry to polemical statements about the rights of First Nations. Based on thorough research into archival and published sources, this volume probes the meaning of Johnson's energetic career and addresses the complexities of her social, racial, and cultural position. While situating Johnson in the context of turn-of-the-century Canada, the authors also use current feminist and post-colonial perspectives to reframe her contribution. Included is the first full chronology ever compiled of Johnson's writing. Pauline Johnson was an extraordinary woman who crossed the racial and gendered lines of her time, and thereby confounded Canadian society. This study reclaims both her writings and her larger significance".
