Sarah Orne Jewett's Contemporaries and Influences
Predecessors Sarah Orne Jewett grew up on the New England coast of Maine and set her novels there. Among the earlier American authors who influenced Jewett's writing were fellow New Englanders Nathaniel Hawthorne and Harriet Beecher Stowe . She also undoubtedly felt the effects of other widely known writers and movements of her time such as the works of Emerson and Thoreau, and she read many European authors including Austen and Eliot. Contemporaries Many influential and important figures were writing between the Civil War and World War I. Some shared with Jewett the label of " local color writers ;" others wrote about similar subject matter or explored similar themes. Placing Jewett's work in her larger literary community helps draw out what common issues may have influenced writers of the era and how Jewett fits into the perception of late nineteenth century American fiction. Important Authors of American Fiction: 1865-1914* Mark Twain W. D. Howells Ambrose Bierce Henry James ... Jack London selection of authors based on authors included in the Norton Anthology of American Literature. Followers Of any writer who claims to have felt Jewett's influence, Willa Cather is certainly the best known. She included an essay in

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909), author and poet, was born and lived in South Berwick, Maine. Sarah Orne Jewett, it has been noted, gave a "permanence to a disappearing order of New England, the remote provincial life which had lingered a few years after the dissolution of the West Indian trade before being engulfed by the new civilization of smoke and steam." She published her first article at the age of nineteen and went on to write a number of novels, a collection of children's stories, and many sketches of country life. Perhaps her best known works are The Country of the Pointed Firs and the short story "A White Heron." In 1901, Bowdoin College recognized Jewett's contribution to American literature by awarding her an honorary Litt.D.the first the school ever conferred upon a woman. Biographical information from

SARAH ORNE JEWETT (1849-1909) was born and died in South Berwick, Maine. Her father was the region's most distinguished doctor and, as a child, Jewett often accompanied him on his round of patient visits. She began writing poetry at an early age and when she was only 19 her short story "Mr. Bruce" was accepted by the Atlantic Monthly. Her association with that magazine continued, and William Dean Howells, who was editor at that time, encouraged her to publish her first book, Deephaven (1877), a collection of sketches published earlier in the Atlantic Monthly. Through her friendship with Howells, Jewett became acquainted with Boston's literary elite, including Annie Fields, with whom she developed one of the most intimate and lasting relationships of her life. The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896) is considered Jewett's finest work, described by Henry James as her "beautiful little quantum of achievement." Despite James's diminutives, the novel remains a classic. Because it is loosely structured, many critics view the book not as a novel, but a series of sketches; however, its structure is unified through both setting and theme. Jewett herself felt that her strengths as a writer lay not in plot development or dramatic tension, but in character development. Indeed, she determined early in her career to preserve a disappearing way of life, and her novel can be read as a study of the effects of isolation and hardship on the inhabitants who lived in the decaying fishing villages along the Maine coast.

Okay, the time has finally come for me to make a horrible personal admission. I've had a secret for years now, one that strikes right to the core of my manhood : of an evening, I enjoy a nice cup of tea. Actually, it's an enormous mug and I steep the tea until it looks like coffee, but I still acknowledge how sketchy it all appears. Nor do I imagine my case will be helped if I state that I most often enjoy said beverage on Sunday nights during Booknotes on CSPAN, though as a general matter I do occasionally partake when I sit down to read, after we get the kids to bed. ThereI've said itthat monkey's off my back. Why here? Why now? Because, this book may be the sine qua non of tea-sipping books. Perhaps the central theme that we've been developing over the course of these reviews is the existence of a fundamental tension in human affairs, between the basically feminine desire for security and the basically masculine desire for freedom. We've examined many examples of the lattereverything from Huckleberry Finn to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest but good examples of the former have been rarer, presumably because I just read fewer women authors. (Though we have found some good examples, try particularly the

Sarah Orne Jewett was a regional writer who grew up in the coastal town of South Berwick, Maine. Her father was a country doctor who allowed his daughter to accompany him on his rounds; many of the rural people Jewett encountered inspired her later fiction. In 1869 one of Jewett's first stories was accepted for publication in the Atlantic Monthly by William Dean Howells. With Howells's encouragement, Jewett continued to craft tales about the rural inhabitants of "Deephaven," a fictional town based on the bygone days of South Berwick. Strong women populated her rural tales, and strong women comprised her friends in the artistic circles of Boston in the 1870s; Annie Adams Fields, wife of the late publisher James T. Fields, would be her closest companion from 1881 until her death. Jewett's works include A Country Doctor A White Heron (1886), and her classic
