Washington Irving
American author Washington Irving was a short story writer, essayist, poet, travel book writer, biographer, and columnist. Irving was born in New York City (near present-day Wall Street) at the end of the Revolutionary War on April 3, 1783. His parents, Scottish-English immigrants, were great admirers of General George Washington, and named their son after their hero. Irving studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1806, but his career soon gave way to his love of writing. His other interests included architecture and landscape design, traveling, and diplomacy. He is best known, however, as the first American to make a living solely from writing. Initially, he wrote under pen names; one of these was "Diedrich Knickerbocker," who was supposedly an eccentric Dutch scholar. In 1809, using this pen name, Irving wrote A History of New-York that describes and satirizes the lives of the early Dutch settlers of Manhattan. Eventually, the term "Knickerbocker" came to refer to anyone from New York who was of Dutch ancestry. Irving's writing continued with The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.

EAF Authors: Washington Irving
(1783-1859) One of the most beloved and influential American writers during the nineteenth century, Irving is remembered today for having written "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." In these stories, as well as in Diedrich Knickerbocker's History of New York, Irving celebrated the folkways of New York's Dutch settlers. Fascinated by European culture, Irving travelled to England in 1815, where he produced The Sketch Book , a collection of sentimental and satiric sketches and stories narrated by Geoffrey Crayon, Gentleman. Following the great success of The Sketch Book, Irving decided to devote himself to authorship and produced a number of histories, travel narratives, and sketches through the rest of his career. Esteemed as an important "literary personage," Irving served as ambassador to Spain. He finally retired to his pastoral retreat Sunnyside in the 1840s, where he received frequent visitations from fellow writers and fans.

Additional information: "Irving, Washington (1783-1859), was one of the first American authors to win recognition in Europe as well as the United States. He became famous for his humorous stories and for his satirical essays, which poked fun at New York City's fashionable society. At various times, Irving also was a lawyer, a businessman, and a United States diplomat to England and Spain. "Irving's best-known works include two short stories, "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." In "Rip Van Winkle," the title character falls asleep for 20 years and awakens to find everything different. "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" tells about Ichabod Crane, a poor schoolmaster, and his encounter with a headless horseman. Irving lived during the period when the United States began to develop an artistic culture of its own. His literary achievements influenced other American writers and helped gain respect for American literature among critics in other countries.

American writer, the first American author to achieve international renown, who created the fictional characters Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane. The critical acceptance and enduring popularity of Irving's tales involving these characters proved the effectiveness of the short story as an American literary form.
From 1826 until 1829 Irving was a member of the staff of the United States legation in Madrid. During this period and after his return to England, he wrote several historical works, the most popular of which was the History of Christopher Columbus (1828). Another well-known work of this period was The Alhambra (1832), a series of sketches and stories based on Irving's residence in 1829 in an ancient Moorish palace at Granada, Spain. In 1832, after an absence that lasted 17 years, he returned to the United States, where he was welcomed as a figure of international importance. Over the next few years Irving traveled to the American West and wrote several books using the West as their setting. These works include A Tour on the Prairies (1835), Astoria (1836), and The Adventures of Captain Bonneville, U.S.A. (1837).
Irving's other works include Bracebridge Hall (1822), Tales of a Traveller (1824), A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada (1829), Oliver Goldsmith (1849), and Life of Washington (5 volumes, 1855-1859).

"I was always fond of vising new scenes, and observing strange characters and manners." The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon by Mark Canada , professor, University of North Carolina at Pembroke Before the Revolutionary War, American literaturefrom Christopher Columbus's travel accounts to Benjamin Franklin's autobiographyhad been primarily nonfictional narratives, sermons, essays, diaries, and imitations of English verse, most of it written in private or shared in small circles. With the political revolution against England, however, came a cultural revolution , and Americans slowly began to build an independent cultural identity, which included a strong literary component. For the first time, America had a significant number of men and women of lettersthat is, writers who created works appreciated for their aesthetic value and who made a career or at least a serious avocation of literature. The first of these writers was Washington Irving, whose Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon , first published in 1819, was a sensation in England and helped build the United States' reputation for creative literature. Over the remainder of his career, which included
