Aldous Huxley "But I like the inconveniences." "We don't," said the Controller. "We prefer to do things comfortably." "But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin." "In fact," said Mustapha Mond, "you're claiming the right to be unhappy." "All right then," said the Savage defiantly, "I'm claiming the right to be unhappy." "Not to mention the right to grow old and ugly and impotent; the right to have syphillis and cancer; the right to have too little to eat; the right to be lousy; the right to live in constant apprehension of what may happen tomorrow; the right to catch typhoid; the right to be tortured by unspeakable pains of every kind." There was a long silence. "I claim them all," said the Savage at last. Mustapha Mond shrugged his shoulders. "You're welcome," he said. from Brave New World

AUTHOR PROFILE
Aldous Huxley(1894-1963) Aldous Leonard Huxley was born on July 26, 1894, into a very distinguished family comprising celebrated novelists, poets and scientists. Aldous' grandfather was Thomas Henry Huxley, a great biologist who helped develop the theory of evolution. His mother was the sister of Mrs. Humphrey Ward, the novelist; the niece of Matthew Arnold, the poet; and the granddaughter of Thomas Arnold, a famous educator and the real-life headmaster of Rugby School who became a character in the novel Tom Brown's Schooldays. When Huxley was 16 and a student at the prestigious school Eton, an eye illness made him nearly blind. He recovered enough vision to go on to Oxford University and graduate with honours, but not enough to fight in World War I, or to do the scientific work he had dreamed of. Scientific ideas remained with him, however, and he used them in many of his books, particularly in his highly acclaimed novel Brave New World. Huxley published his first book, a collection of poems, in 1916. He married Maria Nys, a Belgian, in 1919. Their only child, Matthew Huxley, was born in 1920. The family divided their time between London and Europe, mostly Italy, in the 1920s, and travelled around the world in 1925 and 1926, seeing India and making a first visit to the United States.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Aldous (Leonard) Huxley (1894-1963) English novelist and critic, grandson of the prominent biologist T.H. Huxley (see further below) and brother of Julian Huxley, who also was a biologist. Aldous Huxley's production was wide. Besides novels he published travel books, histories, poems, plays, and essays on philosophy, arts, sociology, religion and morals. Among Huxley's best known novels is BRAVE NEW WORLD, which is one of the classical works of science fiction along with George Orwell 's Nineteen-Eighty-Four . The word "utopia" comes from Thomas More's novel Utopia . In his later years Huxley wrote two books about mind-altering drugs. "Half of the human race lives in manifest obedience to the lunar rhythm; and there is evidence to show that the psychological and therefore the spiritual life, not only of women, but of men too, mysteriously ebbs and flows with the changes of the moon. There are unreasoned joys, inexplicable miseries, laughters and remorses without a cause. Their sudden and fantastic alternations constitute the ordinary weather of our minds. These moods, of which the more gravely numinous may be hypostasized as gods, the lighter, if we will, as hobgoblins and fairies, are the children of the blood and humours. But the blood and humours obey, among many other masters, the changing moon. Touching the soul directly through the eyes and, indirectly, along the dark channels of the blood, the moon is doubly a divinity."

Huxley, Aldous Leonard
Huxley, Aldous Leonard, 1894-1963, English author; grandson of T.H. HUXLEY. After writing critical essays and symbolist poetry, he turned to the novel. Crome Yellow (1921), Antic Hay (1923), and Point Counter Point (1928) all depict social decadence. Brave New World (1932) describes a nightmarish 25th-cent. Utopia . Other works include Eyeless in Gaza (1936) and Ape and Essence (1948). In later years he was strongly interested in mysticism and Eastern philosophy. Huxley also published many short stories and essays. "Religion is for people who have not yet had a spiritual experience." Aldous Huxley Quotes
Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored. The vast majority of human beings dislike and even dread all notions with which they are not familiar. Hence it comes about that at their first appearance innovators have always been derided as fools and madmen. Real progress is progress in charity, all other advances being secondary thereto. Maybe this world is another planet's hell. Experience is not what happens to a man, it is what a man does with what happens to him. There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving and that's your own self. That all men are equal is a proposition to which, at ordinary times, no sane individual has ever given his assent. The humanity of men and women is inversely proportional to their numbers. A man may be a pessimistic determinist before lunch and an optimistic believer in the will's freedom after it. What we feel and think and are is to a great extent determined by the state of our ductless glands and viscera. The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm.

July 1998 Aldous Leonard Huxley was born on July 26, 1894, into a family that included Thomas Henry Huxley, the great biologist who helped develop the theory of evolution. When Huxley was 16 and a student, an eye illness made him nearly blind. He recovered enough vision to go on to Oxford University and graduate with honors, but not enough to fight in World War I. Huxley's emphasis on ideas and his skill as an essayist cannot hide one fact: The books he wrote that are most read and best remembered today are all novels Corm Yellow Antic Hay , and Point Counter Point from the 1920s, Brave New World and After Many a Summer Dies the Swan from the 1930s. In 1959 the American Academy of Arts and Letters gave him the Award of Merit for the Novel, a prize given every five years; earlier recipients had been Hemingway, Mann, and Dreiser. The range of Huxley's interests can be seen from his note that his "preliminary research" for Island included "Greek history, Polynesian anthropology, translations from Sanskrit and Chinese of Buddhist texts, scientific papers on pharmacology, neurophysiology, psychology and education, together with novels, poems, critical essays, travel books, political commentaries and conversations with all kinds of people, from philosophers to actresses, from patients in mental hospitals to tycoons in Rolls-Royces...." He used similar, though probably fewer, sources for Brave New World He died November 22, 1963, the same day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. He was cremated, and his ashes were buried in his parents' grave in England.

Brave New World Aldous Huxley , London, 1935) was probably right when he said, "Huxley is primarily a light philosophical essayist using the novel form to present the more superficial modes of contemporary thought and feeling."
Aldous Huxley was born on July 26, 1894, at Godalming, county of Surrey, England. His father was Leonard Huxley, a prominent literary man, and his grandfather was T. H. Huxley, a biologist who led the battle on behalf of the Darwinian evolutionary hypothesis. His mother was a niece of Matthew Arnold, the English poet, essayist, and critic. His family background seems to have prepared him for a variety of interests - everything from anthropology to zoology and from versification to mysticism. His brother Julian is a leading biologist, and Aldous at one time intended to follow a scientific career.
Having been educated at a preparatory school and at Eton, Huxley intended to become a doctor. But having contracted keratitis (an eye disease resulting in near blindness) he was forced to abandon this idea. He learned to read Braille; after two years he had recovered sufficiently so he could read with a magnifying glass. He then attended Balliol College, Oxford, studied English literature and philology, and took his degree in 1915.
It is interesting to note that Huxley considered the onset of eye trouble the most important single event in his life. This enforced isolation acted as a stimulant rather than a depressant - now more than he ever wanted to "see," know, and understand everything. And he did not want to "see" only what was apparent, but also what was implied. The following comment of Huxley seems to summarize this point of view, "My ambition and pleasure are to understand, not to act."
