Hume, David (1711-1776) Schottischer Philosoph, Ökonom und Historiker. David Hume wurde am 7. Mai 1711 in Edinburgh geboren. 1.

HUME: AN OVERVIEW Hume was a Scottish empiricistwell known for his skepticism and sharpness of thought. Being a freethinker, he was easily critical of thinking which rested on no other basis than traditional argument. He also was sharply critical of thinking which did not arise from the observation of actual behavior (empiricism) but which was merely speculative in nature (rationalism). Yet at the same time he was a quietly confident and serene individual who was deeply comfortable with the worldand rather conservative in his social and political views. Even his own skepticism was tempered by his understanding of the human need for some kind of underpinning of custom or tradition in life. His major philosophical thrust was against the rationalists who were prone to build great intellectual edifices on the foundations of some "self-evident" truths. He considered such intellectualism as being highly dangerouslikely to lead to polemical excesses (as the highly intellectually charged revolutions of France in 1789 and Russia in 1917 were certainly to prove in the years after Hume). To Hume, customwhich was the sum of actual human experiencewas the only healthy foundation on which to build human life. Being an empiricist, he was impressed with the patterns by which people actually lived out their lives. Hume felt that we should pay close attention to the human record of our actual or "natural" (as he put it) behavior in order to draw conclusions about life. Hume on the other hand was most unimpressed by the great intellectual "spins" that philosophers wove around hypothetical behavior in building their great systems of thought. For Hume reality was in the doing, not in the hypothesizing about life.

Hume, David
Impressed by Isaac Newton's success at explaining the apparently diverse and chaotic physical world with a few universal principles, David Hume (1711-1776), while still in his teens, proposed that the same might be done for the realm of the mind. Through observation and experimentation, Hume hoped to uncover the mind's "secret springs and principles." Hume's proposal for a science of the mind was published as A Treatise of Human Nature in 1740, and subtitled "An Attempt to introduce the experimental Method of Reasoning into moral subjects." Though it is now one of the most widely read works in Western philosophy, the reception of the Treatise in Hume's lifetime was disappointing. In My Own Life Hume says that the Treatise "fell dead-born from the press." Considered an atheist by the clergy, which controlled university appointments, Hume sought but never received a professorship.

    - David Hume (1711-1776)
Born in Edinburgh into a Calvinist family in 1711, Hume entered Edinburgh University at the age of 12 to study law, leaving less than three years later, having concentrated more on his own interests than his course work. After a brief business career in Bristol, he moved to France and took up writing. His development of philosophical ideas had been influenced by the concepts of science and observation. His first major book "A Treatise of Human Nature" in 1739 was not an immediate success and he returned to Scotland as a companion to the Marquis of Annandale in the Borders. His next book "Essays, Moral and Political" in 1741 was more successful. Hume proclaimed the dominance of human reason over religious faith and, at a time when religious dogma was followed by most people without question, he was a self-proclaimed atheist. He was thus not able to become professor of philosophy at Edinburgh University because of his "anti-religious" views. Mixing a diplomatic career in France with further writing, his "An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding" had an influence on Adam Smith. While in Paris (as Secretary to the British Embassy from 1763-66) he became popular with French society and helped the writer Rousseau. Hume returned to Edinburgh in 1769 and mixed with the intellectuals of the capital during the phase described as "The Scottish Enlightenment". His associates included the economist

    David Hume
David Hume, , Scottish historian and philosopher, notorious in his day for his religious skepticism bordering on atheism. After entering the University of Edinburgh at the age of twelve and briefly studying law, Hume traveled to France in and began writing what he hoped would be his philosophical masterpiece, A Treatise of Human Nature ). Though the work, with its skeptical consideration of the idea of causality, is now considered a classic of empiricist philosophy in the tradition of Locke and Newton , it was largely ignored on its first publication. After a series of more successful Essays ), Hume presented the ideas from his Treatise again, this time in more accessible form: the Enquiry concerning Human Understanding ) and An Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals , and an important influence on Hume's friend, Adam Smith ). From to he worked on a six-volume history of England. His last major work, Dialogues concerning Natural Religion , appeared posthumously in , and attacked all rational arguments for the existence of God.
