    Some famous Oriel names
There is a College tradition that Sir Thomas More was a student at Oriel, but this cannot be substantiated. A tradition in his family placed him at Canterbury College (where the Canterbury Quad of Christ Church now stands). Another tradition suggests that he may have lodged in St Mary Hall , but there are no records to prove or disprove this. However, it is certain that all the following were at Oriel: Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)
    Fellow 1845-1852
Poet and Critic Thomas Arnold (1795-1842)
    Fellow 1815-1821
Headmaster of Rugby School and Regius Professor of Modern History Thomas Arundel (1353-1414)
    Student 1373
Chancellor of England and Archbishop of Canterbury. Opposed Richard II and crowned Henry of Bolingbroke as Henry IV. George Bryan 'Beau' Brummell (1778-1840)
    Undergraduate 1794
Dandy and arbiter of fashion Joseph Butler (1692-1752)
    Student 1715-1721
Philosopher. Bishop of Bristol and Dean of St Paul's 1740. Bishop of Durham 1750. Thomas Hughes (1822-1896) Undergraduate 1841-1845 Author of Tom Brown's Schooldays and founder member of the Christian Socialists.

In this, the first packet of the Flashman papers, young Harry Flashman is expelled from Rugby School for "beastly drunkenness." He enlists in the Army, serves under Lord Cardigan until he fights a duel with a foreign soldier, Bernier. A short period of service in Scotland during the Chartist riots follows, which introduces him to his wife-to-be, Elspeth. Flashman is then assigned to service in Afghanistan, where he is caught up in the Afghan rebellion of 1842. He is hailed as a hero upon return to England.

    Ramblings with Clare Balding
    Programme 5: Rugby - a town trail
First broadcast Friday 4 May 2001, 3.00-3.30 p.m. Companion: Margaret Healey, local resident and Tourist Information Officer Rugby is one of the few towns in the world to give its name to an internationally known game. Since the Rugby World Cup in 1999, the town has become a Mecca for rugby fans, and Clare starts her walk with Margaret Healey on the hallowed turf of the playing fields of Rugby School where William Webb Ellis first picked up the ball and ran. Margaret, not a great fan of the game, is able to walk Clare through the town centre pointing out other attractions of Rugby. These include the house where the poet Rupert Brooke was brought up, a shop featured in Tom Brown's School Days , and Jubilee Gardens, which used to be the site of the swimming baths. Rugby has a thriving industrial area, which had to be crossed during the walk to reach the more tranquil setting of Brownsover Hall (now a hotel) where Sir Frank Whittle developed the jet engine in the 1930s.
