    Rhagymadrodd
Mab Richard a Phoebe Hughes, Pen y Bryn, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, oedd John Ceiriog Hughes. Ganwyd ef Medi 25ain, 1832. Aeth i'r ysgol yn Nant y Glog, ger y llan. Yn lle aros gartref ym Mhen y Bryn i amaethu ac i fugeila wedi gadael yr ysgol, trodd tua Chroesoswallt yn 1848, i swyddfa argraffydd. Oddiyno, yn 1849, aeth i Fanceinion; ac yno y bu nes y daeth ei enw yn adnabyddus trwy Gymru. Deffrowyd ei awen gan gapel, a chyfarfod llenyddol, a chwmni rhai, fel Idris Vychan, oedd yn rhoddi pris ar draddodiadau ac alawon Cymru. Yn 1865, daeth Ceiriog yn orsaf feistr i Lanidloes. Aeth oddiyno i Dowyn yn 1870, oddiyno i Drefeglwys yn 1871, ac oddiyno i Gaersws yn yr un flwyddyu. Yno y bu farw, Ebrill 23ain, 1887. Treuliodd ei febyd, felly, yn Nyffryn Ceiriog, rhan ganol ei oes ym Manceinion, a'r rhan olaf ym mlaen Dyffryn yr Hafren. Trwy'r blynyddoedd yr oedd tri pheth yn agos iawn at ei galon, - llenyddiaeth Cymru, yr Eisteddfod, ac addysg Cymru. Yr oedd yn hoff o Ddafydd ab Gwilym; yr oedd ganddo gariad greddfol at y naturiol a'r cain. Yr oedd ei fryd ar ddiwygio'r Eisteddfod, ac ar ei gwneyd yn allu cenhedlaethol. Hiraethai am ddadblygiad cyfundrefn addysg, ac ymfalchiai yng Ngholeg Prifysgol Cymru. Un o wir feibion ymynyddoedd oedd.

4. The Ceiriog Valley
The Ceiriog Valley lies immediatly south of and parallel to the picturesque Vale of Llangollen Valley was home to three notable Welsh poets John Ceiriog Hughes (1832-1887), Huw Morus (1662-1709) and Rev. Robert

'A little bit of heaven on Earth' was how Lloyd George described the Ceiriog Valley. Surprisingly, this beautiful valley has remained relatively undiscovered, - a secret place. Only a few miles from the English border and the A5, one of the main tourist routes into North Wales, it has remarkably retained its cultural heritage and unspoilt countryside. The Ceiriog Valley lies immediately south of and parallel to the picturesque Vale of Llangollen. Yet it is the Ceiriog Valley that has been called 'little Switzerland' and given rise to three notable poets, undoubtedly inspired by their love for their homeland. It is all the more surprising, therefore, that had Lloyd George not spoken so passionately in its defence, we may never have known of its beauty. In 1923, Parliament was asked to grant statutory powers to impound the upper waters of the River Ceiriog and to evict the local population living within an area of 13,600 acres. Thankfully, commonsense prevailed and the proposal was defeated. Pistyll Rhaeader waterfall in the Tanat Valley (lower photo) is the highest waterfall in England and Wales (240ft). It can be reached by following the B4500 up the Ceiriog Valley and continuing onto Llanrhaedr, from where it is signposted.
