Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students are usually unfamiliar with Howells and his central position in nineteenth-century American literature. If they have heard of him at all, they are likely to have picked up the (still) prevailing stereotype: that Howells was a genteel prude whose realism could not possibly be of any interest to contemporary readers. Another problem is that students are not often sensitive to quiet irony in what they read; they are not prepared to hear the subtle nuances in Howells's narrative voiceor to read between the lines in his treatment of sexuality, which he handled with Victorian decorum but did not avoid as a subject. It is useful to tell students about the history of Howells's literary reputation: his contemporary fame, his fall from grace during the 1920s, his currently anomalous position in the canon. Students are usually pleasantly surprised by Howells, in part because his prose is not "difficult" (like James's ) and because they find more complexity than they had expected. It is best to start, perhaps, with the "Editor's Easy Chair" selection, which introduces students to his characteristic tone and prepares them to recognize his use of the dramatic method in the fiction: the apparent (but only apparent) narrative detachment, the embodiment of themes in the characters' dialogue and interactions.

William Dean Howells
W. D. Howells produced many novels, stories, plays, and poems in his long life. He served as the editor of Atlantic Monthly and Harper's magazines, and as the "dean" of late 19th-century American literature introduced realism and naturalism, both by his own writings and by encouraging many others from Henry James to Bret Harte and Frank Norris to Mark Twain. He supported socialism and opposed American imperialism. Please visit the William Dean Howells Society web page and join the Society and the HOWELLS-L discussion list.

Reading and Discussion Questions on "Editha" 1. In what ways does this story exemplify or embody Howells’s ideas of realism? See his “Editor’s Study” columns or “Criticism and Fiction” for some of the principles. 2. What’s the nature of the relationship between George Gearson and Editha Bascom? In what ways can their relationship itself be characterized as a struggle for power over ideals? 3. What tactics does Editha use to make George believe as she does about the war? 4. Was George brought up to want to go to war? What are his mother’s and father’s beliefs? What profession did he wish to follow before becoming a lawyer? 5. Howells gives ample evidence that Editha is as much interested in “reading” herself as the heroine of a sentimental story as she is in George. What evidence in the story shows this? 6. Why does she give him a “clouded” liquid to drink? Note the language in that section: George gulps the liquid but refuses to drink hers as well. What might the liquid signify? 7. Editha is described as having a “throaty” voice. What does this suggest about her appeal for George?

The most influential American novelist, editor, and critic of his generation, W. D. Howells was at the center of American literary culture for over fifty years. Born and raised in frontier Ohio, Howells was also one of the first important western writers to emigrate to the publishing centers of the East. Largely self-educated, he visited New England in July 1860 and met Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and other luminaries. As he later reminisced, Hawthorne gave him a note to pass to Emerson: "I find this young man worthy." And while hosting Howells at dinner at the Parker House, James T. Fields said to James Russell Lowell, "this is something like the apostolic succession; this is the laying on of hands." Later in same year, Howells published a campaign biography of Abraham Lincoln, and after Lincoln's election he was rewarded with an appointment as U.S. consul in Venice. There he wrote the essays collected in his first major book, Venetian Life (1866). Settling in Boston the same year, he became the assistant editor of the redoubtable
