A Boy's Song
By James Hogg
WHERE the pools are bright and deep,
Where the grey trout lies asleep,
Up the river and over the lea,
That 's the way for Billy and me.
Where the blackbird sings the latest,
Where the hawthorn blooms the sweetest, Where the nestlings chirp and flee, That 's the way for Billy and me. Where the mowers mow the cleanest, Where the hay lies thick and greenest, There to track the homeward bee, That 's the way for Billy and me. Where the hazel bank is steepest, Where the shadow falls the deepest, Where the clustering nuts fall free, That 's the way for Billy and me. Why the boys should drive away Little sweet maidens from the play, Or love to banter and fight so well, That 's the thing I never could tell. But this I know, I love to play Through the meadow, among the hay; Up the water and over the lea, That 's the way for Billy and me.

Son of poor farmer/foot soldier. Set off aged 13 "to see a bit of the world." Became beggar, robber, apprentice to blacksmith then carpenter - but never for very long. Aged 24 became a attendant samurai to the warlord Oda Nobunaga after displaying impressive intelligence and martial skills. After Nobunaga was assassinated Hideyoshi was in position to subdue all other rival daimyo which he did between 1582 and 1590. He disarmed all peasants and commoners (supposedly to lay "the foundation of the safety of the country and the happiness of the people"), allowing only the Samurai class the right to bear weapons, and restricted social mobility and travel.

Indeed a number of these large horror anthologies were published in the 30s, collecting much of the best British (and some American), horror, mystery and thriller fiction of the late-Victorian and Edwardian eras. Hutchinson, for example, published the massive (1000+ pages) The Evening Standard Book of Strange Stories A Century of Creepy Stories , and A Century of Ghost Stories . Montague Summers edited his famous The Supernatural Omnibus (1931), Dorothy L. Sayers her Great Short Stories of Detection Mystery and Horror , and John Gawsworth his Creeps series. What can I say, they don't write them like they used to. list of authors gives one a good idea of the quality of the writers presented. Even so, there are some stories by lesser known authors which are also very good. My personal favourite, A.J. Alan's "The Diver," a tale of a haunted diving board at the pool in a men's club, isn't particularly atmospheric or well written, but is interesting for its unique venue and the skeptical character who tells it. There are tales of Voodoo (W.B.Seabrook's "Goat-cry, Girl-cry"), horror at sea (W.H. Hodgson's "The Voice in the Knight"), detection (R. Austin Freeman's early Dr. Thorndyke tale "The Aluminium Dagger" and Baroness Orczy's
