to Robert Herrick On the Infancy of Our Savior
Hail! blessed Virgin, full of heavenly grace,
Blest above all that sprang from human race,
Whose heaven-saluted womb brought forth in one
A blessed Savior and a blessed Son.
O what a ravishment 't had been to see
Thy little Savior perking on thy knee!
To see Him nuzzle in thy virgin breast, His milk-white body all unclad, undressed; To see thy busy fingers clothe and wrap His spraddling limbs in thy indulgent lap; To see His desperate eyes with childish grace Smiling upon His smiling mother's face; And when His forward strength began to bloom To see Him diddle up and down the room. O who would think so sweet a Babe as this Should ere be slain by a false-hearted kiss? Had I a rag, if sure Thy body wore it, Pardon, sweet Babe, I think I should adore it; Till then, O grant this boon, a boon far dearer: The weed not being, I may adore the Wearer.

To Anthea
by Robert Herrick (1591-1674)
Bid me to live, and I will live
Thy Protestant to be;
Or bid me love, and I will give
A loving heart to thee.
A heart as soft, a heart as kind,
A heart as sound and free
As in the whole world thou canst find,
That heart I'll give to thee.
Bid that heart stay, and it will stay To honor thy decrees: Or bid it languish quite away, And't shall do so for thee. Bid me to weep, and I will weep While I have eyes to see: And, having none, yet I will keep A heart to weep for thee. Bid me despair and I'll despair Under that cypress-tree: Or bid me die, and I will dare E'en death to die for thee. Thou art my life, my love, my heart, The very eyes of me: And hast command of every part To live and die for thee. Bid me to live, and I will live

Upon Julia's Clothes
Whenas in silks my Julia goes,
Then, then, methinks, how sweetly flows
That liquefaction of her clothes! Next, when I cast mine eyes and see
That brave vibration each way free,
Oh how that glittering taketh me!
Upon a Child
Here a pretty baby lies
Sung asleep with lullabies:
Pray be silent, and not stir
Th'easy earth that covers her.
Upon a Child That Died
Here she lies, a pretty bud,
Lately made of flesh and blood,
Who as soon fell fast asleep
As her little eyes did peep. Give her strewings, but not stir The earth that lightly covers her. The first one is very sensual, no? I'd like to hear some comment on the specific words and images. The image (i.e., the metaphor) in the last three lines especially is an interestingly elusive one. Can you make it out? (I remember as a graduate student being in a class that was posed that question and I remember failing to see what the instructor was getting at!) Which of the two latter poems do you think is stronger?

Rubens and his young wife, Helene, the couple at the far left, are shown in a garden, about to join a group of obviously loving couples. [Rubens' own house in the background, and Venus and cupids on the left] ... The colors are soft and warm, light, gay, ripe, and sensous. The figures melt into each other in a soft, flowing rhythm. ...The courtly man in the broad-brimmed hat introduces us to a world that will be, more and more, the subject of arta golden time without pian or anxiety. POEMS ON THE BICYCLING LISTSERV Back to Index Home [It all started so simply. There had been some discussion on the bicycling listserv about heart rate. In the hope of elevating the dialogue I wrote:] There are those whose heart rate is raised by sprinting or by climbing hills. But consider this: Upon Julia's Clothes by Robert Herrick (1591-1674) Whenas in silks my Julia goes, Then, then, methinks, how sweetly flows That liquefaction of her clothes. Next, when I cast mine eyes, and see That brave vibration, each way free, O, how that glittering taketh me! [Then Mike Madcharo added:] Or Julia undressing: Upon Julia's Unlacing Herself by Robert Herrick (1591-1674) Tell, if thou canst, and truly, whence doth come This camphire, storax, spikenard, galbanum; These musks, these ambers, and those other smells, Sweet as the vestry of the oracles. I'll tell thee. While my Julia did unlace Her silken body, but a breathing space, The passive air such odor then assumed, As when to Jove great Juno goes perfumed. Whose pure immortal body doth transmit A scent that fills both heaven and earth with it.

Herrick, Robert (1591-1674) Englischer Dichter, geboren in London , gestorben in Dean Prior (Devon). Herricks 1648 erschienenes Hauptwerk trägt den Titel "Hesperides; or, the Works Both Human and Divine of Robert Herrick, Esq."
