Robert Herrick was born in Cheapside, London, in 1591, the seventh child ofNicholas Herrick, a prosperous goldsmith. Lit. Back, to Robert Herrick.

Cheapside
, London, in 1591, the seventh child of Nicholas Herrick, a prosperous goldsmith. In November 1592, two days after making a will, Nicholas killed himself by jumping from the fourth-floor window of his house. The Queen's Almoner had to be paid a £220 fee for not to confiscate the Herrick estate for the crown as was usually the case with suicides. There is no record of Herrick attending school, although it is possible he attended Westminster School . In 1607 he became apprenticed to his uncle Sir William Herrick as a goldsmith. St. John's College, Cambridge in 1613, graduated a Bachelor of Arts in 1617, and Master of Arts in 1620. He became the eldest of the "Sons of Ben", Cavalier poets who idolized Ben Jonson , mixing in literary circles in London. On April 24, 1623 Herrick was ordained an Episcopal minister and acted as chaplain to Buckingham Charles I to the living of Dean Prior in the diocese of Exeter, a post he reluctantly accepted. There, in Devon, he lived in the seclusion of country life, and wrote some of his best work, never completely ceasing, however, to long for the pleasures of London. Protectorate government for refusing the Solemn League and Covenant, and returned to London. In 1648 Herrick published his major collection

Seventeenth and Early Eighteenth Century Sonnets
William Drummond (1585-1649), known as the "Scottish Petrarch" wrote many sonnets inspired by the tragic death of his fiancee on the eve of their wedding. Lady Mary Wroth (c.1586-1640), niece of Philip Sidney, wrote a sequence of 83 sonnets and 19 songs that was included in her one published work, Urania John Donne (c.1572-1631) had little patience for the conventions of secular love; he wrote with equal passion of romantic love and religious faith and employed the sonnet accordingly, with intensity and wit. Donne's contemporary Ben Jonson (c.1572-1637) influenced a different set of poets, including Robert Herrick (1591-1674). The religious sonnets of George Herbert (1593-1633), like those of Donne, come as a refreshing break from Elizabethan convention and subject matter. John Milton (1608-1674) presents a striking contrast to most earlier sonneteers; his often complex sentences challenge the English sonnet's traditional structure of three quatrains capped by a couplet. The early eighteenth century saw a decline in the sonnet's popularity, but there were the odd successes and attempts by poets who did not use the sonnet often.

    Robert Herrick
To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time
    To Daffodils

    The Hourglass
To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying. The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun, 5 The higher he's a-getting, The sooner will his race be run, And nearer he's to setting. That age is best which is the first, When youth and blood are warmer, 10 But being spent, the worse, and worst Times still succeed the former. Then be not coy, but use your time, And while ye may, go marry; For having lost but once your prime, 15 You may for ever tarry.
    Hesperides
    To Daffodils
Fair daffodils, we weep to see You haste away so soon: As yet the early-rising sun Has not attained his noon. Stay, stay, 5 Until the hasting day Has run But to the evensong; And, having prayed together, we Will go with you along. 10 We have short time to stay as you; We have as short a spring; As quick a growth to meet decay, As you or anything. We die, 15 As your hours do, and dry Away Like to the summer's rain; Or as the pearls of morning's dew, Ne'er to be found again. 20
    Hesperides
    The Hourglass
That hourglass which there ye see With water filled (sirs, credit me) The humor was, as I have read, But lovers' tears encrystalled, Which, as they drop by drop do pass 5 From th'upper to the under-glass, Do in a trickling manner tell, By many a wat'ry syllable, That lovers' tears in lifetime shed Do restless run when they are dead. 10

    20. Robert Herrick: Christmas Poems
Robert Herrick (15911674). Ceremonies for Christmas. Come, bring witha noise, My merry, merry boys, The Christmas Log to the firing
    http://shakespeareauthorship.com/xmas/herrick.html
    Robert Herrick (1591-1674)
    Ceremonies for Christmas
    The Christmas Log to the firing;
And drink to your heart's desiring.
For good success in his spending,
Come while the log is a-tinding.
    The while the meat is a-shredding;
To fill the paste that's a-kneading.
    Christmas-Eve, Another Ceremony
Come guard this night the Christmas-Pie,
That the thief, though ne'er so sly,
With his flesh-hooks, don't come nigh
From him, who all alone sits there,
Having his eyes still in his ear,
And a deal of nightly fear
    Another to the Maids
Wash your hands, or else the fire Will not tind to your desire; Unwashed hands, ye maidens, know, Dead the fire, though ye blow.
    Another
Wassail the trees, that they may bear You many a plum, and many a pear: For more or less fruits they will bring, As you do give them wassailing.
An Ode of the Birth of our Savior
In numbers, and but these few, I sing Thy birth, Oh, Jesu! Thou pretty Baby, born here, With sup'rabundant scorn here: Who for Thy princely port here, Out-stable for Thy court here.
