Writer: O. Henry Dates: 1862-1910
The Gift of the Magi
by O. Henry
One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one's cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty- seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating. While the mistress of the home is gradually subsiding from the first stage to the second, take a look at the home. A furnished flat at $8 per week. It did not exactly beggar description, but it certainly had that word on the lookout for the mendicancy squad.

Perhaps you have seen a pierglass in an $8 flat. A very thin and very agile person may, by observing his reflection in a rapid sequence of longitudinal strips, obtain a fairly accurate conception of his looks. Della, being slender, had mastered the art.

O. Henry William Sydney Porter - the rolling stone of Austin
by Jacci Howard Bear
P erhaps you've heard Austin described as The City of the Violet Crown . Ever wonder why? Writer William Sydney Porter gets the credit for giving us that name way back in 1894. It appeared in a political humor story Tictocq: The Great French Detective, in Austin Chapter 2 begins: The drawing-rooms of one of the most magnificent private residences in Austin are a blaze of lights. Carriages line the streets in front, and from gate to doorway is spread a velvet carpet, on which the delicate feet of the guests may tread. The occasion is the entrée into society of one of the fairest buds in the City of the Violet Crown. The rooms are filled with the culture, the beauty, the youth and fashion of society. Austin society is acknowledged to be the wittiest, the most select, and the highest bred to be found southwest of Kansas City.

September 11 ~  Sniffles and Smiles Guide to Personal Happiness "Life is made of s o b s sniffles, and smiles , with s n i f f l e s predominating." ~ O. Henry The creator of a good story, writer William Sydney Porter (1862-1910), was born on this day in Greensboro, North Carolina, is better known as "the master of the short story," O. Henry. His early jobs as a pharmacist, ranch hand, and bank teller inspired the creation of his poor, working-class characters. "A good story is like a bitter pill, with the sugar coating inside of it," he said. His stories are known for their sentimentality and ironic twists. An economical writer, O. Henry set the stage for his characters immediately in a tightly-constructed plot, then he moved quickly from introduction to surprise ending. In one of his most popular tales, The Gift of the Magi , a story about true love and the true spirit of giving . O. Henry used a folksy narrator to tell the tale of Della and Jim Young. Both sacrifice their most precious belonging to buy each other a Yuletide gift. Della cuts her glorious hair to buy Jim a watch chain for the heirloom watch he has hocked to buy Della combs. Classic O. Henry, with a witty, satisfying surprise finale.

    O. Henry Post. In 1898 an unexplained shortage in the Austin bank was charged to him. Although many people believed him innocent, he fled to the Honduras but returned to be with his wife, who was fatally ill. He eventually served three years in prison, where he first started writing short stories. Upon his release he settled in New York City and became a highly successful and prolific contributor to various magazines. His short, simple stories are noted for their careful plotting, ironic coincidences, and surprise endings. Although his stories have been criticized as shallow and contrived, O. Henry did catch the color and movement of the city and evidenced a genuine sympathy for ordinary people. His approximately 300 stories are collected in Cabbages and Kings The Four Million The Voice of the City Options (1909), and others. See biographies by Gerald Langford (1957) and Richard O'Connor (1970); study by Joseph Gallegly (1970); bibliography by P. S. Clarkson (1938).

Introduction The O. Henry Book Club of Salisbury, N.C. was founded February 15, 1922 at the home of Miss Alice Slater Cannon (Mrs. W. Gettys Guille). Charter members included Gaither Pearson, Rebekah Marsh, Mrs. William E. Hennessee, Mrs. Barrett Taylor, Jr., Mrs. Walter Blackmer, Jr., and Alice Slater Cannon. Named for the noted North Carolina author, a copy of the club's constitution from the 1920's states that the object of the club was the mutual interest and benefit along literary lines of its members. Over the years, members discussed books assigned at the beginning of a "series." During the May 20-November 4, 1930 series, the club read and critiqued Phillips Russell's
