Friends and Acquaintances Bret Harte
Short-story writer and editor. Bret Harte rose to prominence as a San Francisco writer during the 1860s and 70s. After Sam Clemens came to California in 1865, Bret helped him get published in several publications. While writing The Innocents Abroad in San Francisco in 1868, Bret provided editorial assistance in exchange for being allowed to publish excerpts in the Overland Monthly, of which he was editor. In 1876, Bret came to the Clemenses house in Hartford, Connecticut, where he wrote one of his major stories, Thankful Blossom. Bret and Sam also collaborated on the play Ah Sin. While working on the play and in the immediate aftermath, Bret and Sam became embroiled in a bickering argument, which would lead to their falling out. For the remainder of his life, Sam would have an very negative opinion of Harte as a person, while always respecting his ability as a writer.
William Dean Howells
Very respected and influential editor, writer, and critic from the late 1860s on. W.D. Howells began his career in literature as an editor for the Nation magazine after the Civil War. By 1867, he became an assistant editor for the Atlantic Monthly , the most important literary magazines in the country. After a positive review for The Innocents Abroad in 1869, Sam Clemens went to thank Howells in person at his Boston office. The ensuing friendship between the two lasted for the rest of their lives.

A friend and cohort of Samuel Clemens, he later fell out of favor with Clemens and became the subject of some of Clemens' bitterest written and verbal outrages. Bret Harte
THE IDYL OF RED GULCH by Bret Harte Harte's tale of a small town in California during the Gold Rush centers on a young schoolmistress, a drunken but charming young man, and a prostitute. The unusual triangle creates a quiet, moralistic tale with a few unexpected twists and turns. Go to the tale

  • Bret Harte I n t r o d u c t i o n Bret Harte is best known for his stories set in California in the years following the 1849 Gold Rush. Harte was an easterner by birth and education who went west in 1854 when he was 18 and lived in California until he was 36. He never really lived the life of the mining camps and small towns he wrote about, so his stories tend to mythologize the world he depicted, creating stereotypical characters and places that capture the flavor of the time. "The Idyl of Red Gulch" is one of these stories. "The Idyl of Red Gulch" depicts an incident in a small town in northern California. The three main characters are classic western archetypes the town drunk, the prostitute, and the schoolmistress and they are all portrayed in the manner we have learned to expect. The drunk has a charming side and a surprising past; the prostitute is a painted woman on the outside but a caring, frightened woman on the inside; and the schoolmistress is a stern but warm young woman who is loved by her students and respected by the townfolk.

This link leads to artifacts, teaching tips and discussion questions for this author. At the height of his career, in the 1860s and 1870s, Bret Harte was one of the most famous and most highly paid American writers. His popular accounts of life in Gold Rush-era California, including short stories such as "The Luck of Roaring Camp" and "The Outcasts of Poker Flat," seized the public imagination and made him an international celebrity. Harte's invention of prototypical "western" charactersthe shady prospector, the cynical gambler, the tough cowboy, the prostitute with a heart of goldcreated the mythology through which Americans learned to understand the culture of the "Old West." Combining realistic descriptions of the specific regional characteristics of California life with sentimental plots, Harte hit on a formula that delighted nineteenth-century readers and continues to influence American narratives of the West.
