Thomas Hardy
Read his poem "The Man He Killed"
Nationality: English
Career: Poet, novelist, short story writer, playwright, essayist, and architect Hardy's first book of verse was published in 1898, when he was fifty-eight years old and had achieved a large degree of success as a novelist. Although his verse was not nearly as successful as his novels, Hardy continued to focus on his poetry and published seven more books of verse before his death, developing his confidence and technical competence. With the composition of The Dynasts: A Drama of the Napoleonic Wars (1904-08), an epic historical drama written in verse, Hardy was hailed as a major poet. He was praised as a master of his craft, and his writing was admired for its great emotional force and techical skill. Hardy continued to write until just before his death in 1928. Despite his wish to be buried with his family, influential sentiment for his burial in Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey instigated a severe compromise: the removal of his heart, which was buried in Dorchester, and the cremation of his body, which was interred in the Abbey. http://www.firstworldwar.com/poetsandprose/hardyt.htm
Updated - Saturday, 11 August, 2001 English poet and regional novelist, whose works depict the imaginary county "Wessex" (=Dorset). Hardy's (1840-1928) career as writer spanned over fifty years. His earliest books appeared when Anthony Trollope (1815-82) wrote his Palliser series, and he published poetry in the decade of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land. Hardy's work reflected his stoical pessimism and sense of tragedy in human life. "Critics can never be made to understand that that the failure may be greater than the success... To have the strength to roll a stone weighting a hundredweight to the top of a mountain is a success, and to have the strength to roll a stone of then hundredweight only halfway up that mount is a failure. But the latter is two or three times as strong a deed." (Hardy in his diary, 1907) Hardy's own life wasn't similar to his stories. He was born on the Egdon Heath, in Dorset, near Dorchester. His father was a master mason and building contractor. Hardy's mother, whose tastes included Latin poets and French romances, provided for his education. After schooling in Dorchester Hardy was apprenticed to an architect. He worked in an office, which specialized in restoration of churches. In 1874 Hardy married Emma Lavinia Gifford, for whom he wrote 40 years later, after her death, a group of poems known as

    Far From the Madding Crowd
    by Thomas Hardy (1840 - 1928)
    Type of Work:

    Characterization and psychological novel Setting
"Wessex," England; 1869 to 1873 Principal Characters
Bathsheba Everdene, a capricious young lady
    Gabriel Oak, a dependable shepherd
Mr. Boldwood, a staid, wealthy farmer Sergeant Frank Troy, an unscrupulous soldier Fannie Robin, Troy's secret lover Story Overveiw Gabriel Oak quietly scrutinized his new neighbor from across the hedge. Bathsheba Everdene appeared to be an overly-proud woman, but he found himself attracted by her. Oak's ability and initiative had taken him from humble origins to become a respected shepherd with sheep of his own. Now he prepared himself with care to meet Miss Everdene, then made his way to the house of her aunt to propose marriage. Bathsheba, flattered by the farmer's offer, flamed his hopes for a while, but soon announced that she could not marry, nor love, Gabriel. Before long, Bathsheba unexplainably left the area. Then fate dealt Gabriel another blow: his dog ran his flock of sheep over a cliff, killing them all. "Thank God I am not married," he mused. "What would she have done in the poverty now coming to me?" Oak went to town to search for work. Unsuccessful, at the end of the day he crawled into a cart to sleep. That night the cart carried him toward Weatherford, the very town to which Bathsheba had moved. Near the town, Oak spied a burning barn and bolted through the fields to help. Putting out the fire, he discovered that the mistress he had served was his own beloved Bathsheba, who had inherited her uncle's Weatherbury Farm. Oak asked her to hire him as the farm's new shepherd. Hesitantly, Bathsheba agreed.

The son of a stonemason, he derived a love of music from his father and a devotion to literature from his mother. Hardy could not afford to pursue a scholarly career as he wished and was apprenticed to John Hicks, a local church architect. He continued, however, to study the Greek and Latin classics. From 1862 to 1867 he served as assistant to Arthur Blomfield, a London architect; ill health forced him to return to Dorset, where he worked for Hicks and his successor until 1874. Despite his employment, Hardy was writing continually during this period of his life. Such early novels as
