Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
1749-1832, German Poet, Dramatist, Novelist
People are so constituted that everybody would rather undertake what they see others do, whether they have an aptitude for it or not.
Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it. Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe The really unhappy person is the one who leaves undone what they can do, and starts doing what they don't understand; no wonder they come to grief. Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe Life has been compared to a race, but the allusion improves by observing, that the most swift are usually the least manageable and the most likely to stray from the course. Great abilities have always been less serviceable to the possessors than moderate ones. Oliver Goldsmith 1728-1774, Anglo-Irish Author, Poet, Playwright

ADVICE LITERATURE IN AMERICA
Part 1: The Schlesinger Collection of Etiquette and Advice Books from the Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University
15 reels of 35mm silver-halide positive microfilm plus guide "Manners not only make the man but, to a surprising degree, also a people."
Arthur Schlesinger , writing in Learning How to Behave,
A Historical Study of American Etiquette Books
How does American Advice Literature differ from its European counterparts? What was seen as the proper place of man and woman in the new Republic? What variations existed between the South, the industrial North and the frontier? These questions, and many more, can be explored in this new microfilm collection of prescriptive literature for both sexes from the Schlesinger Collection of Etiquette and Advice Books at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University. The collection was formed by Arthur Schlesinger who used it as the basis for his historical study of American etiquette books. In his book, Learning How to Behave , he traced the evolution of manners in America from colonial times to the 1940's. Schlesinger noted the influence of the original New England settlers whose religious beliefs were directly translated into rules for proper behaviour, deportment and relations between the sexes. He also noted the adoption of English, French and Italian models of behaviour by southern planters.

Sophia’s Choice : An Annotated Bibliography of Books Owned and/or Read by Sophia Smith Compiled by Jacque Bradley Credits Introduction Sources consulted
"My reading has not amounted to much the last week. Nothing new. We are about establishing a library here. I hope it may prove useful and successful, and that I may profit."
    (Sophia Smith's journal entry 26 December 1864)
On 23 December 1864, John M. Greene recorded in his journal Sophia Smith's gift of $500 to start the Smith Literary Society in Hatfield. He also mentioned his own gift of The Holy Bible , because "Whatever is begun with the Bible is begun well." Therefore, this bibliography begins with Sophia's own copy of the Bible. The Holy Bible. New York: American Bible Society, 1854. [recovered] The American Bible Society was the largest publisher of Bibles in America during Sophia's lifetime. This edition is a popular edition, bound simply, which is in remarkably good condition after having been stored for so many years. Separating the Old Testament and the New Testament is a bookmark embroidered with the words God Is With Us . It is on these pages that Sophia Smith entered the names and dates of her parents' marriage, the birth dates of her siblings, and finally on a third page, the names and dates of death for each of her brothers and sisters. The name and date of death for her Uncle Oliver appears at the bottom of the page

ST. NICHOLAS CORRESPONDENCE
Collection Number Collection Dates Collection Volume 1.20 cu.ft. (4 boxes) Biographical Sketch Related Collections Box Inventory
Provenance
Letters purchased circa 1975 from unknown dealer. This collection represents only a minute part of the correspondence of the editors of St. Nicholas magazine. In 1914, 1915, and 1928, hundreds of letters from Scribner's and the Century Company's archives were auctioned off as collector's items. The majority of the existing St. Nicholas correspondence is now held at the New York Public Library. Columbia University and the Huntington Library hold sizable collections of the letters of Mary Mapes Dodge.
Restrictions
Non-circulating; available for research. Researchers should use the photocopies in Box 4 unless special permission is obtained from the curator.
Biographical Sketch Roswell Smith conceived of the idea for St. Nicholas in 1870 when he consulted the famous children's author Mary Mapes Dodge on her ideas about what a magazine for children should be. That same year Smith had co-founded Scribner's with Charles Scribner and Dr. Josiah Gilbert Holland as a rival publication to the popular adult periodicals

55. Library Of American Civilization Titles Available Free On The Web
Hamilton, Gail, 18331896. Woman's wrongs, a counter-irritant microform/ By Gail Hamilton pseud.. http//www.merrycoz.org/voices

Library of American Civilization titles available free on the Web
Compiled by Terry Ballard
Introduction
This project grew out of the frustration that our users often felt when using the Library of American Civilization micro-microfiche cards owned by our library. While the titles add depth to our holdings in 19th century American works, the cards could only be read on one machine in our library, and the quality was often poor at best. One day it occurred to me to hire a student to check the list of LAC holdings in our opac against the list of online titles maintained by the University of Pennsylvania. We found hundreds of hits. We added links to those records in our catalog and then posted the information to this file. The process was repeated in 2002, and we added 90 more titles. Also, I made a complete check of the links and corrected dozens of titles that had changed locations. Since this check will not be repeated for some time, plan to check the link above when any of these links do not work. Adams, Henry, 1838-1918.
