http://www.lib.virginia.edu/speccol/exhibits/church/church.html
The Church archive contains correspondence from the period of the founding of America, including letters from two of the Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, whose personal and political differences helped shape the course of political dialogue in the early days of the country. The letters are rich in personal and historical detail. Both Hamilton and Jefferson write to Mrs. Church with a combination of intimacy and respect. These letters complement the recorded history of the private lives of two of the most prominent statesmen in the early years of independence, and provides evidence of their practical concerns. A complete inventory of the Church archive is available here. There are other letters from Jefferson to Church held in the Library of Congress. The papers consist of 84 items, 1716-1865, chiefly letters of Angelica Schuyler Church (1756-1815) and other family members, including her husband John Barker Church, brother-in-law Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804), father Philip John Schuyler, and brother-in-law Stephen van Rensselaer (1764-1839). Other notable correspondents include:
Justus Erich Bollman (1769-1821)
Charles James Fox (1749-1806)
Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)
Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834)

Foundations of Business Thought Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804) was an American statesman who was born on the West Indian Island of Nevis. He was the illegitimate son of James Hamilton, a Scottish trader, and Rachel Faucett Lavien. In 1769, after the death of his mother and the bankruptcy of his father, he went to work for accountants. He exhibited an exceptional ability to comprehend the complexities of commerce and accounting. His employers were so impressed by his abilities that they helped send him to the Elizabethtown grammar school in New Jersey, and then to King's College (now Columbia University). Hamilton entered the revolutionary movement in 1774 at a public meeting New York City by calling for a general congress of the colonies. When war broke out, Hamilton became a captain of artillery and served with distinction in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, and Princeton. His courage and ability won him a position as Washington's personal secretary. As a result, he acquired great influence with Washington, but he longed for active military service. However, in 1781, he resigned from Washington's staff to command a New York regiment of light infantry at the battle of Yorktown. In 1780, Hamilton had married Elizabeth Schuyler, the daughter of a general and a member of an influential New York family. At the close of the Revolution, Hamilton left the army to study law at Albany, New York. Upon graduation he served in the Continental Congress in 1782-83 and then returned to the practice of law.

Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804)
New York Image: The National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution I. EARLY LIFE Hamilton was born in 1757 on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies. His father was a poor itinerant Scottish merchant of aristocratic descent; his mother, an English-French Huguenot, was a planter's daughter. In 1766, Hamilton's father moved the family to St. Croix in the Danish (now United States) Virgin Islands, returning to St. Kitts himself. Hamilton's mother became a storekeeper. Hamilton received a basic education from his mother and a Presbyterian clergyman, and he learned to speak fluent French. About the time of his mother's death in 1768, he became an apprentice clerk in a mercantile establishment. Bearing letters of introduction, Hamilton traveled to New York City in 1772. Patrons he met there arranged for him to attend Barber's Academy at Elizabethtown (present Elizabeth), NJ. In 1773, Hamilton entered King's College (later Columbia College and University), but the Revolution interrupted his studies. Although not yet 20 years of age, in 1774-75 Hamilton wrote several widely read pro-Whig pamphlets. In 1780 Hamilton wed New Yorker Elizabeth Schuyler, whose family was rich and politically powerful; they were to have eight children. Hamilton read law at Albany and established a law firm in New York City in 1783.

Alexander Hamilton was born a British subject on the island of Nevis in the West Indies on January 11, 1755. His father was James Hamilton, a Scottish merchant of St. Christopher. Hamilton’s mother was Rachael Fawcette Levine, of French Huguenot descent. When she was very young, she had married a Danish proprietor of St. Croix named John Michael Levine. Ms. Levine left her husband and was later divorced from him on June 25, 1759. Under Danish law, Ms. Levine was forbidden from remarrying. Thus, Hamilton’s birth was legally illegitimate. Business failures resulted in the bankruptcy of his father. After the death of his mother, at the age of twelve, Alexander entered the counting house of Nicholas Cruger and David Beekman and served as a clerk and apprentice. By the age of fifteen, Alexander was left in charge of the business. Opportunities for regular schooling were very limited. With the aid of funds advanced by friends, Hamilton studied at a grammar school in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. In 1774, he graduated and entered King’s College (now Columbia University) in New York City and in one year obtained a bachelor’s of arts degree. Hamilton married Elizabeth, the daughter of General Philip Schuyler, on December 14, 1780. The Schuylers were one of the most distinguished families in New York. This connection placed Hamilton at the center of New York society. In 1782, he was admitted to legal practice in New York and became an assistant to Robert Morris who was then superintendent of finance.
