Alexander Hamilton was born on the island of Nevis in the West Indies. His Scottish father and French mother were not married. Very early in life he showed great intellectual potential and was sent to New York City for schooling by a sympathetic clergyman. Hamilton completed his basic schooling and was later admitted to King's College, now Columbia University. Patriotic fervor was at its height during the 1770s and young Hamilton impressed many with speeches and pamphlets. Following Lexington and Concord, Hamilton organized a cavalry company and saw action at Long Island and White Plains. His abilities were soon recognized by George Washington , who appointed Hamilton as one of his aides-de-camp. Toward the end of the Revolutionary War, Hamilton resigned as a Washington advisor in order to resume active participation in the conflict. He served with distinction at Yorktown in 1781. Following the war, Hamilton studied law and married Elizabeth Schuyler, daughter of Gen. Philip J. Schuyler, head of a prominent New York family. The Hamiltons had eight children.

    Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton was born on the West Indies Island of Nevis on January 11, 1757. He went to New York in 1772 for his formal education, beginning with grammar school. Later he attended King's College, which is now Columbia University. Hamilton's great qualities of mind and spirit revealed themselves early. While in his teens, he took a firm stand on the side of the patriots, and became a leader in the movement advocating independence. Before he was 20 years of age, Hamilton commanded artillery troops in several important battles, and from 1777 to 1781, served as aide-de-camp to General Washington . He left Washington to take command of an infantry regiment that took part in the siege of Yorktown. At the age of 25, he served as a member of the Continental Congress from 1782-1783, then retired to open his own law office in New York City. His public career continued when he attended the Annapolis Convention as a delegate in 1786. He also served in the New York State Legislature and attended the Philadelphia Convention in 1787. That convention studied and subsequently adopted the Constitution of the United States on September 2, 1789. Hamilton served another term in 1788 in what proved to be the last time the Continental Congress met under the old Articles of Confederation. President George Washington appointed him to be the first Secretary of the Treasury when the first Congress passed an Act establishing the Treasury Department. He served as Secretary of the Treasury from September 11, 1789 until January 31, 1795. As Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton's term was marked by bold innovation, statesmanlike planning, and masterful reports. His financial program provided public credit where there was none before, and gave the infant Nation a circulating medium and financial machinery. After being in office for barely one month, he proposed the idea of a seagoing branch of the military to secure the revenue against contraband. The following summer, the Congress authorized a Revenue Marine force of ten cutters. The Revenue Marine is now the United States Coast Guard. He also played a crucial role in creating the United States Navy (the Naval Act of 1794). Hamilton also proposed the creation of a Naval Academy, an idea ahead of his time.

    INTRODUCTION
Hamilton, Alexander (1757-1804), American statesman, best known for his fiscal policies settling the finances of the American War of Independence, for his role as the principal author of The Federalist papers, and for his advocacy of a strong central government. Hamilton was born on the West Indian island of Nevis on January 11, 1757, the illegitimate son of James Hamilton, a Scottish trader, and Rachel Faucett Lavien. In 1769, after the death of his mother and the bankruptcy of his father, he entered the countinghouse of David Beckman and Nicholas Cruger at St Croix, where he exhibited a precocious ability to comprehend the complexities of commerce and accounting. With the aid of funds advanced by friends to further his education, he studied (1772-1774) at a grammar school at Elizabethtown, New Jersey, and then entered King's College (now Columbia University).
    REVOLUTIONARY INVOLVEMENT
Hamilton first entered the revolutionary movement in 1774 at a public meeting in the "fields" (now City Hall Park) in New York, with a speech urging the calling of a general congress of the colonies. In the winter of 1774-1775, he also wrote anonymously two pamphlets, A Full Vindication of the Measures of Congress from the Calumnies of Their Enemies and The Farmer Refuted, in answer to the Loyalist pamphlets signed "Westchester Farmer". On the outbreak of war, Hamilton became a captain of artillery and served with distinction in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, and Princeton. His courage and ability won him the notice of General Nathanael Greene, who introduced him to George Washington with a recommendation for advancement. In March 1777, Washington made Hamilton his aide-de-camp and personal secretary. By virtue of his administrative skills, he acquired great influence with Washington, but he longed for active military service. In 1781 he resigned from Washington's staff after a dispute with the general, but he remained in the army and was able to command a New York regiment of light infantry at the decisive battle of Yorktown.

    ALEXANDER HAMILTON .............. BIOGRAPHY ..............
Hamilton retired to a lucrative New York legal practice in 1795, but remained involved in public affairs. He became second in command of the army when war with France seemed imminent in 1798. He plotted against the election of John Adams in 1796 and 1800, and tried to influence members of Adams' cabinet behind his back. In 1800, he used his political power to deter the election of Aaron Burr. This, along with other unfriendly actions, caused Burr to challenge Hamilton to a duel in July 1804, which left Hamilton dead.

    Alexander Hamilton, American

General Hamilton possessed very uncommon powers of mind. To whatever subject he directed his attention, he was able to grasp it, and in whatever he engaged, in that he excelled. So stupendous were his talents, and so patient was his industry, that no investigation presented difficulties which he could not conquer. In the class of men of intellect he held the first rank. His eloquence was of the most interesting kind, and when new exertions were required, he rose in new strength, and touching at his pleasure every string of pity or terror, of indignation or grief, he bent the passions of others to his purpose. At the bar he gained the first eminence.
He was an honest politician; and his frankness has been commended even by those who considered his political principles as hostile to the American confederated republic. His views of the necessity of a firm general government rendered him a decided friend of the union of the American States. His feelings and language were indignant toward every thing which pointed at its dissolution. His hostility to every influence which leaned toward the project was stern and steady, and in every shape it encountered his reprobation.
