Why I Am Opposed to Imperialism
By Bolton Hall
The Arena 28 (July, 1902). O nly the remoteness of the Philippine Islands keeps our American people from realizing our cowardly policy toward the little brown men. It has been marked from the beginning by evasion, then by deception, followed naturally by violence and all continued for more than three years. This is now a matter of common knowledge and need not be recited here, because details of iniquity are unimportant as compared with the principles of right. Since the war with Spain, our Government has entered upon the policy of aggrandizement that characterizes European nations reaching out for the property of weaker nations and pleading that this is done in the interests of civilization: the same plea that Britain made against the Boers. Such aggressions are never for the benefit of the oppressed, nor even for the advantage of the aggressing nation (though if they were, that would not justify them), but are for the benefit and enrichment of a few. In the face of the declaration of the late President in the case of Cuba, that "forcible annexation could not so much as be thought of, because it would be criminal aggression," we have forcibly annexed the Philippines. For this action justification has been sought in a promised increase of trade. Aside from the folly of killing one's prospective customers, and the undisguised criminality of murder for gain, the result has shown that even in a material sense national crimes are national blunders. For by our conduct toward the Filipinos we have aroused a distrust among the nations of South America that will injure us commercially far more than we can possibly profit by possessing the Philippines. And it should be self-evident that peaceful relations with a grateful Filipino republic would have been far more advantageous than the ownership of desolated islands and the hatred of such inhabitants as may remain when the process of assimilation shall have been completed.

http://bernard.pitzer.edu/~lyamane/free.htm
Free Acres Free Acres is a social experiment which began in 1910 and has somehow survived into the 1990's. The 75-acre wooded community of 85 households in New Jersey lies about 33 miles west of Manhattan. People can own the houses on the lots they lease, but they can never own the land. All the land is held collectively by the community, along with a century old farmhouse and a spring-fed pool. On the last Monday of every month there is a community meeting at the farmhouse to address the concerns of the Free Acres folk. Free Acres was founded on the ideals of Henry George, a 19th century political economist. According to George, all land is a gift of nature, and all people have an equal right to use the land and its fruits. With increasing population and the development of the economy, the value of the land increases. The current system of land ownership allows landlords to collect the increasing value of the land by charging higher rents, even though it has been created, not by their efforts, but by society. George proposed to retain private ownership of land, but for society to appropriate the socially created value of the land with a tax. The landowner would be left with the full value of the improvements he or she makes on the land. He argued that all taxation should be replaced with a single tax on land. Since land ownership is concentrated in the hands of the few, he felt this would end the primary cause of social and economic inequality in modern society.

NUMBERING LIST AND CHRONOLOGY
FOR DR. JOHN MEEKS NEAL DESCENDANTS
Dear Gordon Bennett: Thank you for your prompt response. I will attach the Neal Chronology numbering list for starters, as this will show you very quickly who some of the Cherokee County, TX families are. I have put in brackets in this list the surname of each husband of a woman in the list. The most startling discovery came last year when a previously-unknown 1886 biographical publication for Knox County, IL turned out to contain detailed biographies of Charity Teague Neal Camp and her husband Thomas Camp. This information revealed that two of Dr. Neal's daughters (and eventually his younger son) left Tennessee in 1848 to move to Illinois to leave slave territory behind, and I now know that Dr. Neal's wife had strong Quaker roots in South Carolina. Those Quaker roots probably lay behind this decision, which split the family during the Civil War with the result that the two groups of cousins gradually forgot about each other. There are five Union pension files at National Archives, two of which were particularly
rich in information.

NOTE: Between the fall of 2000 and fall of 2001, I performed an extensive effort to perform a full inventory (with tombstone pictures) of Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur. That results of that effort are shown below. At the end of each entry is a indication of what section of the cemetery the stone is located in. Locations of each section within the cemetery can be seen on the map on my Riverside Cemetery index page.

[The Heritage of Sociology.] The University of Chicago Press, Chicago [etc.] 1992. ix, 244 pp. $15.00. This is the first English translation of the writings on collective memory by the French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs (1877-1945), one of the most important advocates of the Durkheimian tradition in the Interbellum. Halbwachs's thesis is that human memory can only function within a collective context, which can be evoked by, e.g., war memorials and socially significant anniversaries, but also by family reminiscences: thus various groups of people have different collective memories. In his biographical introduction the editor sketches the important influence of Henri Bergson's philosophy on Halbwachs's work. This cemetery was established in the 1880s. According to the staff, there are no records of any burials before 1891. Records of burials between 1891 and 1915 contain only a limited amount of information. Records after 1915 are much more complete. Most of the earlier burials are Irish, but there are some Portuguese and French as well. We have only transcribed those stones that are, or likely are, of Irish individuals, and others are included if they were on the same stone. Transcriptions are completed of all existing stones of Irish burials for Plats 1, 2, 2A and 3. (10/02) Plat 1

It includes the papers of authors, novelists, playwrights, poets, journalists, editors, critics, professors, and historians as writers . Materials in the collections include drafts of literary works (novels, short stories, essays, and plays, among other genres) correspondence, diaries, biographical sketches, research materials, galley proofs, and book reviews.
