"Streetscapes" Columns by Christopher Gray, 1987-1991
This list covers the appearance of the "Streetscapes" column by Christopher Gray in The New York Times , from March 15, 1987 up to the present day. The subject of the column is the history and architecture of New York City, principally Manhattan, with a secondary emphasis on modern preservation practices and policies. The column was conceived by the late Michael Sterne and has been continued by his successor Michael Leahy. Also included are occasional feature stories by Christopher Gray and elsewhere in the same newspaper. Although the text of the column is not posted here, it has always appeared in the Sunday Real Estate Section of The New York Times , usually on page six or seven, and is recoverable through normal library techniques. In 1990 Dover Publications published most of the 1987-1989 columns in book form as Changing New York. The Times now offers old columns on the web in two forms. Those less than 365 days old are available free or for a small fee at: http://archives.nytimes.com/archives/

INTRODUCTION Chicago’s growth has long been linked to the strength and diversity of her industries. Many excellent histories of Chicago reflect the importance of business in the city’s life; for example, A.T. Andreas’ History of Chicago (1884-1886) or Donald L. Miller’s City of the Century (1996). These books and other general histories can be found listed on the Chicago Bibliography The general histories of Chicago are supplemented by works which focus on the histories of specific companies, such as the books on this list. These company histories are available at the Harold Washington Library Cente r or the Sulzer Regional Library . The books are useful for tracing the history of individual Chicago area companies as well as for the growth of industry in the Chicago area. They are also useful for History Fair projects. Historical information about local companies may also be found in business directories, such as Hoover’s Handbook of American Business or manuals from Moody’s. Information on individual companies is also available in many places on the internet, such as the Library’s

    Berkeley: Student Publications
    First Publications
The first student publication, The College Echo , was published by the Durant Rhetorical Society at the College of California in Oakland. The first of more than 60 publications which appeared on the Berkeley campus of the University was begun in March, 1871, when the Durant Rhetorical Society sponsored a continuation of its first paper in The University Echo . The Neolaean Literary Society published, in March, 1873, the Neolaean Review as an "exponent" of the society and not as competition for the Echo . The two publications merged in January, 1874, as The Berkeleyan , which gave way in 1897 to The Californian and became, on October 25, 1897, the Daily Californian
The Daily Californian and the Blue and Gold
    The Daily Californian
was in continuous operation after that time and, by the mid-1960s, was the sponsored newspaper of the Associated Students. The ASUC supervised the paper's activities through a consultative board, whose membership was made up of seven students, a professional journalist, two faculty members, and an administrative representative. The board had the authority to recommend staff appointments, promotions, and suspensions, and changes in the paper's by-laws to the Executive Committee of the ASUC. The board also evaluated the paper's operations and performance. The offices of the newspaper were located in Eshleman Hall, the new student office building. The paper had a staff of over 80 who were entirely responsible for its publication.

        Preface to the Second Edition
This dictionary was first published under the auspices and the guidance of The International Auxiliary Language Association in 1951. In 1971, twenty years later, it is being reprinted. To answer the second question first: A few of these books are gathering dust on the shelves of enthusiasts who transiently embraced Interlingua as a world salvation; but the great majority of copies are now scattered over the face of the globe, in the libraries of individuals and institutions who are aware of and interested in the linguistic similarities within the structure of the Romance languages, which similarities are, after all, the substance and the backbone of this volume. As to the first question: The dictionary is being reprinted because there is a demand for it. This indicates that in two decades Interlingua has not simply outlived its usefulness and is now hanging around in odd corners as an historical atavism but that it has established itself in Europe and in America, performing its communications function in such varied fields as molecular spectroscopy and demography.
