In Memoriam.
(A. L. Gordon.)
At rest! Hard by the margin of that sea Whose sounds are mingled with his noble verse, Now lies the shell that never more will house The fine, strong spirit of my gifted friend. Yea, he who flashed upon us suddenly, A shining soul with syllables of fire, Who sang the first great songs these lands can claim To be their own; the one who did not seem To know what royal place awaited him Within the Temple of the Beautiful, Has passed away; and we who knew him, sit Aghast in darkness, dumb with that great grief, Whose stature yet we cannot comprehend; While over yonder churchyard, hearsed with pines, The night-wind sings its immemorial hymn, And sobs above a newly-covered grave. The bard, the scholar, and the man who lived That frank, that open-hearted life which keeps The splendid fire of English chivalry From dying out; the one who never wronged

Adam Lindsay Gordon
A DEDICATION
TO THE AUTHOR OF HOLMBY HOUSE
THEY are rhymes rudely strung with intent less
Of sound than of words,
In lands where bright blossoms are scentless,
And songless bright birds;
Where, with fire and fierce drought on her tresses,
Insatiable Summer oppresses Sere woodlands and sad wildernesses, And faint flocks and herds. Where in dreariest days, when all dews end, And all winds are warm, Wild Winter's large flood-gates are loosen'd, And floods, freed by storm, From broken up fountain heads, dash on Dry deserts with long pent up passion Here rhyme was first framed without fashion, Song shaped without form. Whence gather'd? The locust's glad chirrup May furnish a stave; The ring of a rowel and stirrup, The wash of a wave. The chaunt of the marsh frog in rushes, That chimes through the pauses and hushes Of nightfall, the torrent that gushes

What is Hope? A smiling rainbow
Children follow through the wet; 'Tis not here, still yonder, yonder: Never urchin found it yet. What is Life? A thawing iceboard On a sea with sunny shore; Gay we sail; it melts beneath us; We are sunk, and seen no more. What is Man? A foolish baby, Vainly strives, and fights, and frets; Demanding all, deserving nothing; One small grave is what he gets. ca. 1827? Oh! wind that whistles o'er thorns and thistles, Of this fruitful earth like a goblin elf; Why should he labour to help his neighbour Who feels too reckless to help himself? The wail of the breeze in the bending trees Is something between a laugh and a groan;

ADAM LINDSAY GORDON
Poet Adam Lindsay Gordon (1833-1870) was born in Fayal in the Azores on October 19th, 1833. He was educated in England, where he was good at sports but not studiously inclined and certainly undisciplined.
His father sent him to Australia to, hopefully, start a new and more useful life. He arrived in Adelaide in November of 1854. His many pursuits included being a police officer, poet, boxer, horse breaker and steeplechase jockey (all of which he was capable of carrying out), parliamentarian, manager, investor, businessman (all of which he displayed a considerable lack of talent in).
At the age of 29 he married Margaret Park, 17, and used an inheritance of 7000 pounds from his mother's estate to help publish his own writing. His first published verse was a ballad entitled The Feud in 1864. In 1867 he published Ashtaroth, A Dramatic Lyric, Sea Spray and Smoke Drift.
His interest in steeplechase racing brought him to Ballarat. During one visit he received an offer from Walter Craig to take up the leasehold of the livery stables that were attached to Craig's Hotel in Bath Street. He arrived to take up the leasehold in 1867 with his wife and daughter.

Master in Lunacy
Master in Lunacy, a new exhibition at the Hyde Park Barracks, is an interesting study of the history of mental health care including, asylums, inmates and treatments from the First Fleet to the present. Master in Lunacy, named after the government department located on the top floor of the Barracks from 1888 to 1951, is an interpretive display which explores the history of the Master in Lunacy's office. Michael Bogle and Samantha Fabry, Curators of the Hyde Park Barracks said that some of Sydney's most colourful characters like Henry Lawson, Bee Miles, J.F. Archibald, William Chidley and Miss M.D. all spent time inside mental asylums. "Eccentricity and lunacy, which were often labels for displays of unacceptable public behaviour could land these people in psychiatric detention," said Samantha Fabry. The early lunatic asylums - as they were called - were like gaols. As the last century progressed, treatments and asylums improved radically.

History
In Anglo-Saxon times, Adam was found occasionally, but only as the name of a monk, or other cleric. In the Middle Ages, however, it became fairly common, especially in Scotland and Northern England. Though it declined in the 14th century, Adam rose again after the Reformation, and was an especial favorite of in the Victorian Age (particularly among the lower classes). Since the 1960s, the name has again become very popular.
