Here Theophile Gautier embodies the image of the Romantic poet. He sports an elegant cap of damask cloth trimmed with braid. His shaggy beard and hair seem to grow right into his furry overcoat. He stands gazing thoughtfully away from the camera, solemn and erect, his hand thrust into his waistcoat. Gautier was a poet and journalist who championed the concept of "art for art's sake," that is, that art need serve no other purpose than to exist for its own achievement. He later softened his approach, explaining that, "smitten in my youngest years with painting and sculpture, I became a delirious lover of art…." Gautier and Nadar were lifelong friends. As editor of the journal L'Artiste , Gautier published many of Nadar's photographs, including this portrait in 1859. The oval print is of the kind that Nadar offered for sale in his studio, an edition print. Another print of this same image is arched at the top like a tombstone. Satiĝo dormas funde de viaj du okuloj;
Deziro, am', envio en ili estas mutaj,
Jam ili eltrinkis lumon kaj vivon, kiel glutaj

Piedo-trene iras sub arda sunobrulo,
Kaj oni iras plue, kaj oni, jen, ekvidas
Ion verdantan, kion montri la man' rapidas:
Estas cipresa bosko kun multaj ŝtonoj blankaj. Ke vi ripozu, Dio en la dezert' de l' tempo Tombejojn metis, kiel oazojn de silento: Ekkuŝu kaj ekdormu, vojantoj anhelantaj!

Theophile Gautier: Salon de 1833, Salon de 1834, Salon de 1836
Edited by James Kearns Theophile Gautier was one of the most important art critics in nineteenth-century France. This edition makes available his first three reviews of the annual Paris Fine Art Salon. Written during a crucial phase in French art, they shed light on Gautier's emerging aesthetic theories and on the artistic, cultural, and institutional issues with which French art was engaged at that time, from the Ingres versus Delacroix controversy to the emergence of romanticism in sculpture. The reviews are accompanied by detailed annotations that explain and contextualize specific references and comments. The volume represents a major contribution to the discovery of a largely unmapped area of French writing on the visual arts. The introduction, text, and essential notes are in French. James Kearns is a lecturer in French at the University of Exeter. Published by University of Exeter Press, distributed by Northwestern University Press.

The Mummy's Foot
Theophile Gautier
I had entered, in an idle mood, the shop of one of those curiosity-venders, who are called marchands de bric-a-brac in that Parisian argot which is so perfectly unintelligible elsewhere in France. You have doubtless glanced occasionally through the windows of some of these shops, which have become so numerous now that it is fashionable to buy antiquated furniture, and that every petty stock-broker thinks he must have his chambre au moyen age. There is one thing there which clings alike to the shop of the dealer in old iron, the wareroom of the tapestry-maker, the laboratory of the chemist, and the studio of the painter - in all those gloomy dens where a furtive daylight filters in through the window-shutters, the most manifestly ancient thing is dust - the cobwebs are more authentic than the guimpe laces, and the old pear-tree furniture on exhibition is actually younger than the mahogany which arrived but yesterday from America. The warehouse of my bric-a-brac dealer was a veritable Capharnaum, all ages and all nations seemed to have made their rendezvous there, an Etruscan lamp of red clay stood upon a Boule cabinet, with ebony panels, brightly striped by lines of inlaid brass, a duchess of the court of Louis XV nonchalantly extended her fawn-like feet under a massive table of the time of Louis XIII with heavy spiral supports of oak, and carven designs of chimeras and foliage intermingled. Upon the denticulated shelves of several sideboards glittered immense Japanese dishes with red and blue designs relieved by gilded hatching, side by side with enameled works by Bernard Palissy, representing serpents, frogs, and lizards in relief.

Theophile Gautier on adventure and modern life
"The pleasure of traveling consists in the obstacles, the fatigue, and even the danger. What charm can any one find in an excursion, when he is always sure of reaching his destination, of having horses ready waiting for him, a soft bed, an excellent supper, and all the eases and comfort he can enjoy in his own home! One of the great misfortunes of modern life is the want of any sudden surprise, and the absence of all adventures."

Chapter 1 The "Leopold," a splendid Tuscan steamer plying between Marseilles and Naples, had just doubled Procida Point. The passengers, cured of their sea-sickness by the sight of land, most efficacious of all remedies, were all out on deck. On the part reserved for the first-class passengers, stood a number of Englishmen endeavoring to get away as far as possible from each other and to trace around themselves a circle none might venture to enter. Their splenetic faces were carefully shaven, their cravats had not a wrinkle, their shirt collars, white and stiff, looked like triangles of Bristol board, their hands were protected by brand-new Suede gloves, and their new boots shone with Lord Elliot's blacking. They looked as if they had just emerged from one of the compartments of their dressing-cases, for in their correct get-up there were visible none of the little disorders of dress which are the usual consequences of travel. On the edge of the aristocratic quater-deck, strolled, while smoking their cigars, three or four young fellows whose straw or felt hats, sack-coats with huge horn buttons, and duck trousers, made it easy to recognise as artists, a fact confirmed by the mustaches a la Rubens, or cropped short a la Paolo Veronese. Inspired by very different motives they also were tying, like the dandies, to catch a glimpse of the beauties whom their lack of wealth forbade their approaching more closely, and these efforts somewhat interfered with their enjoyment of the magnificent panorama outspread before them.

Captain Fracasse
by Theophile Gautier
Chapter I Castle Misery Upon the southern slope of one of those barren hills that rise abruptly here and there in the desolate expanse of the Landes, in South-western France, stood, in the reign of Louis XIII, a gentleman's residence, such as abound in Gascony, and which the country people dignify by the name of chateau. Two tall towers, with extinguisher tops, mounted guard at the angles of the mansion, and gave it rather a feudal air. The deep grooves upon its facade betrayed the former existence of a draw-bridge, rendered unnecessary now by the filling up of the moat, while the towers were draped for more than half their height with a most luxuriant growth of ivy, whose deep, rich green contrasted happily with the ancient gray walls. A traveller, seeing from afar the steep pointed roof and lofty towers standing out against the sky, above the furze and heather that crowned the hill-top, would have pronounced it a rather imposing chateauthe residence probably of some provincial magnate; but as he drew near would have quickly found reason to change his opinion. The road which led to it from the highway was entirely overgrown with moss and weeds, save a narrow pathway in the centre, though two deep ruts, full of water, and inhabited by a numerous family of frogs, bore mute witness to the fact that carriages had once passed that way.
