Sir James George Frazer
Sir James George Frazer was a Social Anthropologist, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He attended the University of Glasgow and Cambridge University . He was elected as a Fellow of Trinity College in 1879, and remained until his unfortunate death in 1941. Sir James was made a Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Liverpool in 1907, and continued teaching until 1922. Frazer's work covered a wide array of anthropological research. The study of myth and religion became his areas of expertise. He was the first to suggest a relation between myths and rituals. This gave myths legitimacy in the order of society. His theory was extended to explain the meaning of myths in literate societies like are own. The monumental work had a great impact on early 20th-century thought. The Golden Bough (1890), a study of ancient cults, rites, myths and their parallels with early Christianity, was his greatest work. It encompassed many of his other skills, including his eloquent writing style and supreme knowledge of his field. This book established Frazer as a preeminent scholar. He would expand it to 12 volumes in the next 25 years in a monumental exploration of the cults, legends, myths and rites of the world and their influence on the development of religion. However, the number of volumes has come under scrutiny depending upon the source. Some have the figure reaching as high as 15, but the general consensus is 12 volumes. In 1914, he was knighted for his work in the further advancement of his field.

Glasgow, educated at the universities of Glasgow and Cambridge. He is known especially for his masterpiece, The Golden Bough, published originally in two volumes (1890); in later editions it was enlarged to 13 volumes. A monumental study in comparative folklore, magic, and religion, it showed parallels between the rites and beliefs of early cultures and those of Christianity. The work had a great impact on the early 20th cent., its influence extending to psychology and literature. An abridged one-volume edition was published by the author in 1923. A new one-volume version, cut and annotated by T. H. Gaster, appeared in 1959 as The New Golden Bough.

The blurb on the back of the book: James George Frazer The Golden Bough A new abridgement with an Introduction and Notes by Robert Frazer A classic study of the beliefs and institutions of mankind, and the process through magic and relogion to scientific thought, The Golden Bough has a unique status in modern anthropology and literature. First published in 1890, The Golden Bough was eventually issued in a twelve-volume edition (1906-15) which was abridged in 1922 by the author and his wife. That abridgement has never been reconsidered for a modern audience. In it some of the more controversial passages were dropped, including Frazer's daring speculations on the Crucifixion of Christ. This one-volume edition restores Frazer's bolder theories for the first time, setting them within the framework of a valuable introduction and notes. A seminal work of anthropology

VII. Incarnate Human Gods T HE I NSTANCES taura, uruhia (under the inspiration of the spirit), the priest was always considered as sacred as the god, and was called, during this period, atua, god, though at other times only denominated taura in Northern Celebes, after a pig has been killed, the priest rushes furiously at it, thrusts his head into the carcase, and drinks of the blood. Then he is dragged away from it by force and set on a chair, whereupon he begins to prophesy how the rice-crop will turn out that year. A second time he runs at the carcase and drinks of the blood; a second time he is forced into the chair and continues his predictions. It is thought that there is a spirit in him which possesses the power of prophecy. The person temporarily inspired is believed to acquire, not merely divine knowledge, but also, at least occasionally, divine power. In Cambodia, when an epidemic breaks out, the inhabitants of several villages unite and go with a band of music at their head to look for the man whom the local god is supposed to have chosen for his temporary incarnation. When found, the man is conducted to the altar of the god, where the mystery of incarnation takes place. Then the man becomes an object of veneration to his fellows, who implore him to protect the village against the plague. A certain image of Apollo, which stood in a sacred cave at Hylae near Magnesia, was thought to impart superhuman strength. Sacred men, inspired by it, leaped down precipices, tore up huge trees by the roots, and carried them on their backs along the narrowest defiles. The feats performed by inspired dervishes belong to the same class.

XXXVI. Human Representatives of Attis F ROM I NSCRIPTIONS it appears that both at Pessinus and Rome the high-priest of Cybele regularly bore the name of Attis. It is therefore a reasonable conjecture that he played the part of his namesake, the legendary Attis, at the annual festival. We have seen that on the Day of Blood he drew blood from his arms, and this may have been an imitation of the self-inflicted death of Attis under the pine-tree. It is not inconsistent with this supposition that Attis was also represented at these ceremonies by an effigy; for instances can be shown in which the divine being is first represented by a living person and afterwards by an effigy, which is then burned or otherwise destroyed. Perhaps we may go a step farther and conjecture that this mimic killing of the priest, accompanied by a real effusion of his blood, was in Phrygia, as it has been elsewhere, a substitute for a human sacrifice which in earlier times was actually offered.
