France's skepticism appears already in his early works, but later the hostility toward bourgeois values led him to support French Communist Party. In the 1920 his writings were put on the Index of Forbidden Books of the Roman Catholic Church. "The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread." (from The Red Lily My Friend's Book (1885), were happy. After failing his baccalaureate examination several times, France finally passed it at the age of twenty. In the 1860s he was for a time an assistant to his father, then he was a cataloguer and publisher's assistant at Bacheline-Deflorenne and at Lemerre. He also worked as a teacher. When his father retired, France took a series of jobs as an editorial assistant. He became member of the Parnassian group of poets, Gautier, Catulle, Mendes and others, and built himself a high reputation in the literature circles. During the Franco-Prussian War, France served briefly in the army, and witnessed the bloodbath at the Paris Commune in 1871.

France had written several stories and novels before he achieved his first great success with Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard
In 1885 he published Le Livre de mon ami My Friend's Book Le Petit Pierre (1918), and La Vie au fleur The Bloom of Life ]. From 1888 to 1892 France was the literary critic of the newspaper Le Temps . His reviews, inspired by the scepticism of Renan, but highly subjective, were collected in four volumes under the title On Life and Letters ]. About this time France turned sharply against the naturalism of Zola. His own work of this period consists of historical fiction that evokes past civilizations with great charm and deep insight. The period of transition from paganism to Christianity was one of his favourites. In 1889 appeared Balthazar , a fanciful version of the story of one of the Magi, and in 1890 , the story of the conversion of an Alexandrian courtesan during the Christian era.

Anatole France

At school he received the foundations of a solid humanist culture and decided to devote his life to literature. His first poems were influenced by the Parnassian revival of classical tradition, and, though scarcely original, they revealed a sensitive stylist who was already cynical about human institutions. This ideological skepticism appeared in his early stories: Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard (1881), a novel about a philologist in love with his books and bewildered by everyday life; ), which discreetly mocks belief in the occult; and (1890), a tale set in Egypt of a courtesan who becomes a saint, and Le Lys rouge The Red Lily ), a love story set in Florence.
