Private tutor, lecturer on Italian art and history; he served in the Red Cross in Egypt during the first world war, though bequests made employment unnecessary.
Did you know? Although he suppressed his own homosexual-themed Maurice (1913-14) throughout his life, he was a great fighter against censorship on others' behalf, campaigning against the suppression of Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness and appearing as a witness for the defence in the Lady Chatterley trial. Critical verdict Forster remarked in 1958 that "I have always found writing pleasant... Whether it will last, I have no idea." His reputation rests principally on A Passage to India, a complex, bitter epic about the end of colonialism; however, his humanist stance and Edwardian aesthetics have dated and his standing has fallen, perhaps because he lived nearly half a century after Passage without producing another substantial work.

Edward Morgan Forster

In my search for an effective metaphor to summarize the use of the web as a personal composition medium, it occurred to me that the hoary old notion of the commonplace book was a pretty effective candidate. Today's bicycle ride to work found me thinking the following, as summarized in a message to John Blackburn: I'm wrestling with the Big Question of the morning, and maybe the century: ?how to inspire people to put in the time exploring and reading to find the trenchant passages that INSPIRE further thought and exploring and reading? Here's a brief definition I found at http://metalab.unc.edu/ibic/Commonplace-Book.html (and see links therein to collected items): Commonplace book (n.): an edited collection of striking passages noted in a single place for future reference. There was a time when commonplace books were a popular way for civilized men and women to record striking passages they found in their reading. Who can forget the electrifying effect that some thoughts have on us when we encounter them for the first time? The commonplace book is a way of memorializing those striking passages so that one can return to them for renewed inspiration. A bit of hunting turned up some nice sites to do with commonplace books:

His father, an architect, died when of consumption when Forster was almost two years old. His mother Lily gave him the awareness of injustice and the sense of propriety that appears in his novels. He travelled to Italy, Greece,Germany, Egypt and India, becoming very acquainted with India in particular. In Italy, he lived for several years, (like Goethe and Shelley These travels provided many of the backgrounds and situations for his novels and stories. Forster's works are mainly:

While he was stationed in Alexandria with the Red Cross during World War I, English novelist E. M. Forster (1879-1970) used the pen name "Pharos" for articles he wrote for a local newspaper, the Egyptian Mail . He took the name from the ancient lighthouse of Alexandria, and his essays wereand continue to be in a new centurymodest beacons of peace and humane culture in the darkness of war. Forster continued to use the name (sometimes abbreviated "P") back in England until 1920. Many essays from throughout this period were gathered together in Pharos and Pharillon , printed and published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf's Hogarth Press in 1923. By the time he left Egypt at the beginning of 1919, Forster had also completed Alexandria: A History and a Guide (published 1922). Both of these belles lettres classics sparkle with the same joie de vivre that radiates from the only surviving photograph of Forster from the period (see illustration). He looks healthy and happy, with his hair curled from the swimming and the sea air. It is an unusual image of Forster: he is cheerful, emanating relaxed sensuality and general physical well-being. He had reason to be happy. He was living an independent and active life. His work in military hospitals, while often painfully sad, was meaningful and absorbing. He had a variety of friends and acquaintances, including intellectual peers among the English and the cosmopolitan population. Among these was C. P. Cavafy, whose career was to be launched in the English-speaking world by Forster.

by Michelle Campagna Edward Morgan Forster (1879-1970) was an English novelist, essayist, and social and literary critic. His novels were written in a fluid style, and they showed his interests in social and personal relationships, along with the psychological and racial problems in his time. He was best known for his novels Howards End and A Passage to India In 1901-02, Forster made his first visits to Italy and Greece and began writing short fiction and novels and devoting much of his life to writing. His first novel was Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905), followed by The Longest Journey A Room With a View Howards End (1910), and later A Passage to India The Celestial Omnibus and Other Stories came out in 1911, and The Eternal Moment and Other Stories came out in 1928. Both of these novels were volumes of Forster's shorter works Forster returned from his many travels and to a break from writing to get his M. A. at Cambridge. After his short rest, he returned to the world of traveling. In 1912-13, he spent his winter in India, gaining information for his novel A Passage to India . During this time, Forster became a part of the Bloomsbury group, which included many of the intellectual and artistic individuals in London. After World War II broke out, Forster volunteered for the Red Cross. This sent him to Alexandria, where he was from 1915 to 1918. In 1922, he returned to India for six months and became the private secretary to the Maharajah of the State of Dewas Senior. Also during this year, Forster started to write nonfiction, beginning with a guidebook to Alexandria. After World War II, he traveled to South America, the United States, Italy, and Greece.
