In this issue of OED News we have an interesting account from Professor Richard Allsopp of the background to his recently published Dictionary of Caribbean English Usage , which highlights the difficulties of data collection and organization faced by all lexicographers. We also have a contribution from Stuart Silverstein, a writer and attorney who lives in Los Angeles, and is editor of Not Much Fun: the Lost Poems of Dorothy Parker (New York: Scribner, 1996). Mr Silverstein is a regular contributor to the OED , and has found hundreds antedatings in the works of Parker and her circle. We would also like to acknowledge valuable help from Japanese scholars: Professor Hideo Hirooka of Osaka has generously provided the project with copies of his books Dialects in English Literature and Thomas Hardy's Use of Dialect , as well as several articles by himself and Masako Hirooka.

FERBER, EDNA (1887-1968). Edna Ferber, novelist, was born on August 15, 1887, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Jacob Charles and Julia (Neumann) Ferber. Her father was a Jewish immigrant from Hungary. The family left Kalamazoo when Edna was three years old to live in Chicago for a year. Afterward, they spent seven years in Ottumwa, Iowa, and finally settled in Appleton, Wisconsin, where she graduated from Ryan High School. She became the first female reporter for the Appleton Crescent , although she had no desire to be a writer. Her work on the high school newspaper and her publication of a feature article on the confirmation service at Temple Emanu-El in Appleton had impressed the Crescent 's editor. After she was fired by a new editor who did not care for her style of writing, Ferber was offered a job with the Milwaukee Journal . She took a leave from her duties at the Journal due to illness and returned to her family's home in Appleton to recuperate. There she started writing and selling her short stories and began work on her first novel, Dawn O'Hara, The Girl Who Laughed

Edna Ferber was disappointed that she never had the money to attend college, but she managed to build a career as a reporter and writer that earned her recognition as "the greatest American woman novelist of her time." She worked for the Milwaukee Journal and the Chicago Tribune, and was a war correspondent during World War II. Like many of her contemporaries, Ferber expressed her belief in rugged American individualism in her fiction. Critics see her writing as insightful on a sentimental rather than a profound level. Her novels and stories are slices of American life, and many of them were so well-received that they were adapted for the stage and film. The musical version of "Show Boat" was a hit both on Broadway and on the screen. Other films based on Ferber's work include "So Big," "Dinner at Eight," and "Giant," which starred James Dean. Works:
