Father Ryan 65 - St. Pius X 42 On the second and final game of the Thanksgiving weekend trip, St. Pius traveled to Nashville to play Father Ryan, the defending Tennessee State Champion in the private school classification.
The game was never close, as Ryan scored the first nine points of the game and kept a double digit lead throughout. The Father Ryan defense frustrated the Golden Lions and kept them out of sync the entire game. Ryan took a 36-18 into the intermission and cruised the rest of the way to the blowout win.
"I hope this game is a wakeup call for us," remarked St. Pius coach Lou Lefevre, whose team falls to 2-2 on the season and opens its Region 6AAAA schedule in the upcoming week. "Father Ryan is a good team that exposed all of our weaknesses and we'll have to eliminate most of those weaknesses if we are going to be a contender in Region 6AAAA." Game Side Notes

Brentwood 35, Father Ryan 14
Friday, September 13, 2002 BRENTWOOD Some less-than-perfect practices earlier this week led to a less-than- perfect Brentwood victory over Father Ryan last night. That gave Bruins Coach Ron Crawford a little more to be concerned with. Brentwood beat Father Ryan 35-14 despite amassing 10 penalties for 88 yards and mishandling snaps on a field goal attempt and a punt in the second half. The miscues diminished solid performances by quarterback Austen Everson and running back Glaydon Lifsey. The penalties particularly frustrated Crawford, who said his team had an especially poor practice on Tuesday. They hurt us in the first game, which was a close loss [17-7 to Brentwood Academy] and they hurt us tonight, Crawford said. We didnt practice very well and it showed. If you dont practice well, you dont play well. Some people think you can turn it on on Friday, but I dont think so. Still, the Bruins (2-1) moved the ball well on the Fighting Irish (0-4) in the first half. Everson threw for 133 yards and a touchdown in the half, and Lifsey had 87 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

When we arrived at Father Ryan, the gym was packed full of students and parents watching the wrestling matches. Fourteen schools were represented today: Father Ryan, Baylor, McCallie, Montgomery Bell Academy, Brentwood Academy, Harding Academy, Notre Dame, MUS, Webb, St. Andrews, Knox Catholic, Briarcrest, St. Benedict, and Memphis Catholic. Later on, the finals got under way around 3:30 pm.
Father Ryan cheerleaders can't wait for spring break! They told us they were going to Panama City, Florida, this year. (Seniors go there every year - March 20th to be exact.) Anne, Laura, Stephanie, Rachel, and Marie told us that Montgomery Bell is the Irish's big rival. They said their main job as a wrestling cheerleader is to "beat on the mats." They also support the guys by making them boxes of candy and goodies. These girls think that heavyweight senior Gordon Berry is the hottest member of the wrestling team!
Here's Father Ryan wrestler Michael Fay vs. MBA's Cal Alexander. Michael (in purple) attempts to bring Cal down, which he did to succeed and move on to win 4th place in the 171 weight class! Way to go, Michael!

Dallas Not Last Word on Clergy Scandal
By Terence P. Jeffrey
When the meeting of Catholic bishops adjourned in Dallas last week there were predictions from despairing Catholics and Catholic-bashers alike of the impending doom of the Roman Catholic Church. But I have news for both despairing Catholics and their anti-Catholic fellow travelers: The church is going nowhere but up from here. Yet, growing up, I never knew a scandalous priest. The first Jesuit I encountered at Saint Ignatius was Father Ralph Drendel. In the first period, on the first day of my freshman year, he marched into the classroom in his black suit and Roman collar, stood ramrod straight at an overhead projector, and slapped a transparency onto the screen. The First Principle and Foundation of the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola flashed on the wall: "Man is created in order to praise, reverence and serve God, and by this means to save his soul, and all other things are created in order to aid man in the attainment of this goal . . ." Gentlemen, he said, write this down. Tonight you will memorize these words, and tomorrow you will recite them in class.

Father Ryan beats Baylor, 50-47
By Dave Link
The Chattanooga Times MURFREESBORO, Tenn. Baylor's bid for its first TSSAA state basketball championship fell short Friday night after a frantic finish. Nashville Father Ryan moved into the championship game of the Division II State Tournament with a 50-47 victory over Baylor at Middle Tennessee State University. Senior forward Tim Parker carried the Red Raiders (20-7) with 22 points and 10 rebounds, but couldn't quite carry them far enough. "We didn't play sub-par," Parker said. "We played like we wanted to play. They matched forces with us and we just came up 1.8 seconds short." It was a tight game the whole way. With a seven-point lead late in the first half, Baylor coach Austin Clark knew his team had a long way to go. "Father Ryan has a very good basketball team," Clark said. "They won their region against some very good basketball teams. We knew they wouldn't roll over. It was nip and tuck. When we were down, we didn't roll over, either." Father Ryan (25-7) will play rival Nashville Montgomery Bell Academy (16-10) today at 4 EST for the state championship.

Father Ryan, Baylor in final
By Bruce Bowen
The Chattanooga Times Notre Dame and Baylor each walked away from Spring Fling IV last year with a state soccer championship; the Irish in A-AA for the second straight year and the Red Raiders in AAA. This year, however, only one will get the chance for another title as Father Ryan beat Notre Dame, 3-0, and Baylor held off Memphis Christian Brothers, 2-1, in the Division II state semifinals on Thursday at Finley Stadium. Second-ranked Father Ryan and third-ranked Baylor will play in the championship match tonight at 7 at Finley. Baylor 2, Christian Brothers 1: The Red Raiders, defending Class AAA champions, built a 2-0 lead with 25 minutes left in the match before the Purple Wave fought back to make things interesting. Jason Thompson capitalized on the first scoring opportunity of the match with an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute for Baylor (15-2-3). The Red Raiders scored again with 25:38 left in the match when Aaron Cutshaw scored off an Andrew North cross, the first Baylor shot of the half.

MEMORIAL SERVICE TO BE HELD FOR REV. EDMUND G. RYAN, S.J. BUFFALO, NY Rev. Edmund G. Ryan S.J. , former executive vice president for academic affairs at Canisius College (1978-1992), on Wednesday, February 14 at 5 p.m. in Christ the King Chapel. The service is open to the public. Father Ryan passed away on Friday, January 26, 2001 at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. He was 72 years old. Father Ryan came to Canisius from Seattle University in 1978 to serve as director of planning and research. The following year, he was appointed executive vice president for academic affairs. Among his many accomplishments were upgrades of Old Main and the Horan-O'Donnell Science Building, the expansion of the Bouwhuis Library, and the construction of the first student townhouses. He left Canisius in 1992 for a one-year sabbatical in California. Most recently, Father Ryan was special assistant to the president for mission and planning at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. He often returned to Canisius and Christ the King Chapel to preside over marriage ceremonies for Canisius alumni and friends. A Jesuit priest since 1959, Father Ryan graduated from Loyola University in Chicago, and held theology degrees from West Baden (Ind.) and Woodstock (Md.) colleges, and master's and doctoral degrees from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He also held a number of honorary doctorates, including one from Canisius.

The Adventures of Sister Hildegarde #11
"Father Ryan! What are you doing here?" asked Sister Agatha. "Sister Agatha, what are you doing here? The last I saw you, you were in Boston." "Father, it's a long story." "Later, Sister. All of you come in. You all look so tired. Come and I'll get something to eat. And some cold drinks." The food and drinks that Father put out looked like a feast to the captives. Sister Agatha was pleased to see that even out at the mission he kept his dishes nice and clean. She also marveled at God's providence. She knew that Father Ryan, whom she knew since he was Jimmy Ryan and she taught him in the first grade, had volunteered for the Missions by joining the Society of St. James in Boston and was a missionary in Colombia. She had thought about him often during the last couple of days but she never thought she would run into him. Father Ryan insisted that everyone eat and eat plenty. Only when all had had their fill would he listen to Sister Agatha's amazing tale and the stories of the other captives. "Thank God, you found your way here", said Father."We have plenty of room. Spend the night here. In the morning I'll take you to Bogota. It really isn't that far. Then you can all get to your homes. And I'll personally put Sister Agatha on a plane for Boston."

In supplying the spiritual needs of a congregation growing so rapidly Father Eis had the assistance at different times of several priests. Father Hormisch assisted from 1878 to 1880, then Father Hochmiller of the Josephinum College. It was not until 1889 that a regular assistant was appointed by Bishop Watterson. Rev. Hugh Ewing had been ordained but a short time when he was sent to Sacred Heart Church and remained there until the formation of St. Peter's Parish of which he was made the first pastor. After Father Ewing, the Rev. Augustine Vassal aided Father Eis for eleven years until the spring of 1907. Rev. William Schaeffer served for a few months and was succeeded by Rev. John Curran. The latternever very strongfell victim to the flu epidemic and died November 5, 1918. Besides his parish duties, Father Curran was also acting as Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese. He was a native of Bellaire and lies buried in that city. DEATH OF FATHER EIS Father Eis was also stricken with influenza in 1918, and he never fully recovered. His condition was complicated with the infirmities of age and he died at St. Francis Hospital, December 9, 1922. Father John B. Eis was pastor of sacred Heart Parish for over forty years. He was a man of great ability with a talent for leadership. One of his gifts was knowledge of several languages, which was most helpful to him in his parochial duties. He was also distinguished for his zeal in preaching the Word of God and unflagging devotion to the progress of Sacred Heart School. Father Eis is buried in St. Joseph Cemetery and the parish shortly after his death marked his last resting-place with a fine monument.

June 10, 1893 , Archbishop Williams entrusted to Rev. William A. Ryan the task of organizing a new congregation to relieve the overcrowded condition of St. Peter's. To better fulfill the Archbishop's purpose, that part of St. Peter's parish farthest from the parent church was selected as the location of the new parish. Humble and lowly were the beginnings of this great parish of St. Margaret. When Father Ryan came here a young priest from Brookline in June 1893 to take charge of the new parish, he found no church, no priests' house, and some parishioners believe, a debt of $10,000 on land that had been secured for the site of a new church, at the corner of Boston and Harvest Streets. (It is unclear whether Father Ryan secured the land after he arrived or Archbishop Williams had it previously secured.)
